Bay of Lübeck Dolphin – marine mammal spotted near Travemünde

by

After more than two years without sighting, a dolphin could be seen yesterday in the Bay of Lübeck! The bottlenose dolphin had been spotted swimming off Travemünde. A spectacular video shows the encounter with the animal on the Baltic coast. We from Just wanderlust have already been on the lookout for the marine mammals on the Baltic Sea beach this morning.

Yesterday morning in front of Travemuende beach: The Baltic Sea is mirror-smooth, not a breeze blows. Then an employee of the Port of Lübeck spotted the dolphin from his boat and was able to film the marine mammal for several minutes. The bottlenose dolphin swam curiously alongside the observer's boat. Before the Dolphin disappeared after about five minutes, he even jumped out of the water again. We from Just Wanderlust were at that time near Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf / Ostsee directly on the beach, but unfortunately we couldn't see the dolphin.

Dolphins are more common in the Baltic Sea

The sighting of the dolphin in the Bay of Lübeck is not unusual. Already in the last two centuries, the marine mammals were spotted in the Baltic Sea. However, the frequency of discoveries has increased significantly in recent years - either at one larger number of animals or is due to the fact that smartphones and cameras offer better documentation options. The Record year at dolphin sightings in the Baltic Sea was 2016, Never before have so many bottlenose dolphins been spotted in this sea. At that time even had a diver in the Baltic Sea the animals filmed.

How long will the Lübeck Bay Dolphin stay?

The animals are an attraction for tourists vacationing on the Baltic Sea and of course also for locals. On the other hand, they are not to be trifled with either. This was the record year of 2016 the dolphin was responsible for the death of several porpoises, The dolphins could displace the native species. Especially since they seem so comfortable that the dolphins stay over winter in the Baltic Sea can. In any case, a dolphin visit to the Baltic Sea is an exciting matter. Perhaps The animal stays a little longer here with us in the bay.

In any case, we will venture more often with the Stand Up Paddling Board on the Baltic Sea for the next few days and look specifically for the lovable marine mammal. Maybe we are lucky and get to see the dolphin from Travemünde again.
