Wanderlust definition – wanderlust & wanderlust

by

The term wanderlust has a long history of meaning and origin and is now a symbolic word that graphically expresses the joy of traveling and the desire to discover new things. When vacationers, travellers, travel bloggers and authors use the term wanderlust, they are talking about the joy of travelling, vacationing and discovering new countries - less often about the activity of hiking itself. For me, wanderlust and wanderlust describe a basic feeling - the constant urge to discover and explore the world, both paired with a deep curiosity about life. In the middle between wanderlust and wanderlust there is always freedom, because I just love this big, colorful world with all its facets. By the end of this article, you'll probably have wanderlust too - because I'll give you a detailed overview of my definition of wanderlust.

Wanderlust describes the joy of hiking, the constant inner drive to explore nature and the world away from or close to home on foot.

Wikipedia

Wanderlust is the strong urge to discover the world carried by your own feet.

Sascha Tegtmeyer

The explicit meaning of the term wanderlust dates back to the 19th century and is somewhat different. Literally, the word wanderlust naturally reflects something different: namely the desire to hike, i.e. to set off on foot and individually discover countries far from home.

However, when the word was coined, these countries were not yet that far away: Originally, wanderlust was a word from Middle High German. In addition to the literal joy of hiking, the focus was also implicitly on the inner drive of the person who figuratively sets out on foot to discover nature, countries and the world. At that time, however, this world was more in the German-speaking area.

The etymology of the word wanderlust offers some interesting insights into its literal and figurative meanings over time. The word wander was first used in Middle German in the 12th century as wandern, meaning "to go astray". Lust, in turn, means something like “strong desire”. Both taken together literally describe the strong desire to go astray. You know the old saying: Not all those who wander are lost. But wanderlust is more than just a desire for physical exploration — it's a spiritual journey, the wanderings of the soul.

Those of us who have wanderlust feel our hearts pulling us in different directions: to explore distant countries and cultures, to have new experiences and to venture outside of our comfort zone. Wanderlust is an inborn longing that can never really be satisfied - so why not live it out? Let your wanderlust take you on an unforgettable journey.

What is the wanderlust definition - and how does it differ from wanderlust?

Fernweh and Wanderlust are quite similar in the meaning of the terms. Wanderlust stands by definition for the longing and the desire to travel and a need to travel to the wide world. This need is so strong that it almost hurts. According to the definition of wanderlust, there is a deep desire to leave the familiar and familiar living space and discover the world. The extent to which this should happen is not defined in more detail. Wanderlust is in complete contrast to homesickness.

So, if you suffer from wanderlust, you have plenty of opportunities to satisfy your desire to travel. You can do it with a relaxed luxury vacation try, a long-distance trip or a adventure holiday try. Experience shows that the wanderlust, however, tends to get bigger, the better the trip was. If you do not have much time, you can simply be wanderlust with one City trip to satisfy. That should at least work against the worst wanderlust.

Wanderlust is the downright painful desire to visit a strange place.

Sascha Tegtmeyer

Compared to wanderlust, wanderlust is a more dynamic and active term. It is also used as a synonym for wanderlust. However, wanderlust is more dynamic. The wanderlust always carries with it the active spirit of departure. The person who loves to wander always has his suitcase at hand and has one foot out the door. Wanderlust, on the other hand, is more of a negativism and a passive matter due to the root word “weh” for pain.

Wanderlust does not so much embody the departure, but rather the painful desire for it. According to our very own definition, you have gained a lot when wanderlust turns into wanderlust, You pack your suitcase and get started to discover the world on a long journey or a short vacation.

Historical references to the term wanderlust

If you look around today in the blogosphere around, one could smoothly think that the term wanderlust has a more modern origin in the Anglo-American language area. But that's not the case. Its roots go back a long way. The term wanderlust was in 19. Century in German-speaking countries. Thus, the formation of concepts falls into the age of Romanticism, a special cultural and social epoch. At that time one spoke frequently of the walking, that a desire is and meant thereby also literally on foot by the country stripes - with the walking stick, as one imagines. At that time there were many students' student songs, which were coined for example by Joseph von Eichendorff or Joseph Victor von Scheffel.

This term wanderlust was used in hiking clubs and the “Wandervogel” movement of 1896, which mainly included schoolchildren and students from middle-class families, also adopted the term wanderlust. This German term became very popular across borders thanks to the songs and writings of the youth movement. The term wanderlust first appeared in English usage as early as 1902. Other languages such as Irish, Danish or Italian have adopted the term wanderlust as a synonym for wanderlust and the desire to travel.

The term wanderlust in art

The concept of wanderlust found its way into art early on. On the other hand, he was influenced by art in general. The topic already appears in Scheffel’s “Frankenlied”. Here, however, wanderlust is still used in its own sense: it's actually about getting out into the fresh air and hiking. During the beautiful summer time, you should discover your own region and enjoy the beautiful weather by hiking through the country. There is an even smaller connection to hiking than vacation or travel in the folk song “Walking is the Müller's Lust” by Wilhelm Müller.

In this case, it's less about the desire to travel and more about the years of travel that a young professional used to go through. In the broadest sense, however, one could also interpret today's reference as meaning that people with a strong desire to wander want and need to discover the world and gain experience at a young age. So it is said: “This can’t be a right-wing miller who never thought of hiking.”

But the theme of wanderlust also occurs in modern music. Here, however, it clearly refers to the desire to travel and wanderlust. American rock band REM also released a song called Wanderlust on the 2004 album Around the Sun. The motif of traveling and discovery is also described there. The singer sings in German: “I am totally delighted/and overwhelmed, because I am alone/and cannot go back/with all my wanderlust.”

Joining the term wanderlust between then and now

The motif of wanderlust comes from the age of romance. This stylistic epoch began in Europe in 1795 and lasted until 1848. The term wanderlust is strongly linked to the idea of the romantic wanderer, who at that time adorned many works of art and paintings such as those by Caspar David Friedrich and was also well received in literature. This romantic wanderer is torn between wanderlust, i.e. the longing for foreign countries, and home.

The motif of wandering and wanderlust is also based on a socially critical component that criticizes and rejects conventions. Wanderlust and longing are to be seen as a demarcation from everyday social life, which in the 19th century is characterized by hard factory work and narrow family and social conventions.

The main motive of wanderlust is the adventure and the search for the adventure

In addition, the motives of wanderlust are the search and adventure. The search means a cosmopolitan attitude on the part of those who enjoy hiking, for whom traveling is not just for relaxation, but also for education. In addition, the trip is to be seen as a station of life experience and is very much used for self-realization. Furthermore, wanderlust is strongly linked to the concept of the adventurer and adventure. So with a person who is characterized by their inner restlessness and the search for adventure.

At the same time, this also implies that this person is bored in the social corset. The wanderlust adventurer raises the important questions of life. He questions his existence and wants to get to know life more complex in all its facets. He travels to find himself and to discover a deeper meaning in life.

Idealistic, unrealistic claim

This idealistic idea of entitlement to wanderlust, which strives against conventions and ordinary bourgeois life, also has the traits of the pure idealist and, in the more distant sense, of the idiot, who, as a good-for-nothing and worthless person, represents purely idealistic and egoistic motives in planning his life and makes no contribution to social life and contributes to the community.

All of these wanderlust motifs can still be found in the blogosphere among many travelogue writers and travelers. In addition to social constraints, travelers today love to distance themselves from tourists and vacationers.

According to the attitudes just described, for many travel bloggers, tourists and beach vacationers are not interested in fulfilling themselves and finding a deeper meaning in life, but instead lie around lazily on the beach for 14 days during their package vacation and spend their time eating without thinking and doing nothing or mass tourist sightseeing in places that everyone already knows. The goal of today's wanderlust traveler, however, is to distance themselves from the masses of tourists and vacationers and to look for the ultimate individual trip - if such a one even exists.

Reflections on the concept of wanderlust

The combination of wanderlust and lust is very strong: wanderlust expresses our innate desire to explore the world, to wander from place to place in search of knowledge and understanding, while igniting in us a spark of passion that only travel can provide can spark. Whether we want to wander across town or across continents, wanderlust lures us and allows us to satisfy our simmering curiosity about the unknown - and it reminds us that life is an adventure to be explored and enjoyed .

However, wanderlust does not only refer to physical hikes, but also to the thirst for knowledge, exploration, learning and discovery. Whether it's a traveller's, explorer's or student's wanderlust, wanderlust can be seen as the urge to seek new experiences and new knowledge to broaden our understanding of the world around us.

For some, wanderlust is simply the urge to experience life outside of their comfort zone; for others, it's the urge to explore not just physical places, but emotional or spiritual realms as well. Whatever your wanderlust, whether you want to escape reality or seek a new way of looking at things, wanderlust can be a powerful force that propels you on your journey.

However we define wanderlust, one thing is clear: wanderlust has always been and will continue to be an integral part of human life in the future. We hike because it's in our nature - we hike to explore the unknown, to find something new and different that can enrich our lives. Whatever your wanderlust, let it take you on a journey! Who knows what you might discover.

The term wanderlust also includes spiritual aspects - this includes personal development, but also meditation and mindfulness.

Wanderlust Festival

The Wanderlust Festival also interprets the meaning of the term very broadly. Because it is a festival that is about spirituality and mindfulness. The festival is international and describes itself as follows: “When a unique community of yogis, meditation teachers, musicians, coaches and creatives come together for several days in a breathtaking natural resort to celebrate the Wanderlust spirit, the first European Wanderlust Festival is about to begin .” It definitely sounds very exciting – but at the same time it also seems very detached from the original meaning of Wanderlust.

Wanderlust TV series

The Wanderlust TV series is quite a juicy affair, as it takes wandering pleasure quite literally. This is about a sexual aspect that has nothing to do with traveling or wanderlust. The content of the series is as follows: After many years of marriage with three now grown children, the therapist Joy and her husband face the problem of their lack of sex. Because both of them don't want to miss out on eroticism, they try an open relationship with extramarital affairs.

Wanderlust merchandise

In the meantime, the term wanderlust has become so popular that it has unfortunately become somewhat worn out. That was different almost a decade ago when I founded Just-Wanderlust.com. There are now all kinds of merchandising items with Wanderlust branding, such as necklaces, world maps and T-shirts. You have to look in the relevant shops to see what's available there.

My definition of wanderlust – I love adventure, travel and the sea

I guess I have wanderlust for the sea every second of my life. That drives me out of the house and on the plane to discover a new beach, a hidden gem hotel or a new place. Freedom is my central motive - even if it's just the freedom to allow myself wanderlust and wanderlust. And of course I want to process what I experienced by writing about it.

I have to write about my experiences

When I write, what I've seen while traveling is twice as intense. All the traffic lights are green when I'm on the road. I don't have to prove anything to anyone, I just do my thing - unfiltered life. I can laze around by the pool in a luxury hotel for 14 days or sleep in a sleeping bag on the beach for a week - I love both equally because they satisfy my desire to travel and wanderlust. I take the freedom.

Wanderlust while diving and snorkeling

And nowhere do I feel it more than when diving and snorkeling, swimming, stand-up paddling or many other great water sports. At some point I decided to go my own way when traveling - beyond all the conventions of friends and social media of the travel blogger scene. The path I have taken sometimes leads along the well-trodden tourist paths and often also on lonely routes that no one has ever taken before us.

I welcome everyone who sees it that way and look forward to it Travel blogger cooperations with like-minded people.
