The Baltic Sea in winter is a retreat for everyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and the perfect destination for a winter getaway. When the last holidaymakers leave after the autumn holidays, calm slowly returns to the towns on the Bay of Lübeck. From Scharbeutz to Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf/Baltic Sea you will not only find cheaper accommodation, but also plenty of time for contemplative walks, sauna and wellness or simply spend the time with good food. A short travel report about the advantages of a winter holiday on the Baltic Sea.

Table of Contents show

Whenever I come to Scharbeutz on a day in late autumn or early winter, a stiff breeze blows and the waves of the churned Baltic Sea in autumn washing the seaweed on the beach, I can really let go of the hectic world and escape the hustle and bustle. The stormy, uncomfortable autumn and winter on the Baltic Sea are certainly something for lovers and not for sun-hungry beach holidaymakers. Which is more of a one at this time of year Dream beach in Thailand recommended. Every time I go for a walk on the beach by the Baltic Sea I have to think of Reiner Maria Rilke's poem "Autumn Day":

Lord it is time. The summer was very big. / Put your shadow on the sundials, / and let go of the winds in the corridors. / Command the last fruits to be full; / give them two more southerly days, / push them to completion, and chase / the last sweetness into the heavy wine. / If you don't have a house now, you won't build one anymore. / Anyone who is alone now will stay there for a long time / will watch, read, write long letters / and wander back and forth in the avenues / restlessly when the leaves drift.

Reiner Maria Rilke

There is hardly a better way to describe the feeling on a day in late autumn and winter Baltic Sea to walk along and know that peace has finally returned. Because the summer was very big. And if you don't want to miss out on a holiday by the sea in winter, you can now make yourself really comfortable in the Bay of Lübeck - there are really plenty of opportunities to keep yourself busy now. And if you don't want to go out into the cold, you can just relax with a good one Book Make yourself comfortable in front of the fireplace and look out to sea.

Dear Baltic Sea holiday in winter? New visitor records in summer

In the dream summer of 2018, it was certainly more crowded on the Baltic Sea coast than ever before - at least that's how it felt. Even more tourists have flocked to the coast than in previous years. I call it the full feeling of summer when the seaside resorts in the Bay of Lübeck from Sierksdorf, Haffkrug, Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand to Niendorf/Baltic Sea are bursting at the seams.

This means stress for residents because there are traffic jams everywhere, parking spaces are becoming scarce and on sunny days you can hardly get a foot on the ground at the popular beach spots. In short: it is simply too crowded, especially on sunny and warm days.

In restaurants you have to make a reservation days or even weeks in advance and the supermarket line stretches right across the store. In short: everywhere is crowded and full of hustle and bustle, which simply makes life more stressful. After the autumn holidays, this suddenly changes and peace returns Bay of Lübeck.

By September at the latest, you can only hear the restaurants and retailers who didn't have a day's break in the summer talking longingly about the time "after the autumn holidays". But can you really look forward to the dark, cold season? The good news is: yes, you can!

Activities for your Baltic winter vacation

You wouldn't believe what you can do on the Baltic Sea in winter. It is not without reason that the trend is still towards holidays in Germany and the Bay of Lübeck is increasingly becoming a year-round destination. A winter holiday by the sea can easily rival a ski holiday – in the truest sense of the word. The winter activities on the Baltic Sea are really fun and you can just relax and unwind with many exciting experiences.

1. Go for a walk on the beach

What could be better in winter than wrapping up with a winter jacket, boots, gloves and hat and going for a walk on the beach? Whether alone, as a couple or with the whole family: you can spend hours by the sea and think about God and the world with a warm coffee to go. The clear, cool air, the wind and the sea really clear your head. The kilometer-long sandy beach in the Bay of Lübeck is perfect for a seemingly endless walk. And all dog owners are lucky: from October to March, their four-legged friends are allowed to go to the beach anywhere in the Bay of Lübeck!

2. Eating out and drinking coffee in Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz and Niendorf

If there is one piece of wisdom that has certainly proven to be true, it is this: sea air makes you hungry. That's really true! That's why you can stop off at one of the cozy restaurants and cafés in Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf, Haffkrug and Sierksdorf, which are located right near the beach. There you can find delicious food and coffee specialties all year round - and of course one of the most beautiful views of the Baltic Sea is included.

3. Riding on the Baltic Sea beach: experience the feeling of freedom

Sporting activities in winter on the Baltic Sea are of course also a pleasure. The Bay of Lübeck around Scharbeutz has a lot to offer, especially for riders. From October 01st, 2018 to March 31st, riders are allowed to ride their horses ride across the beach. A pretty relaxed affair, trotting through the shallow water on the horse and letting the winter sun shine on your face.

In the Bay of Lübeck around Timmendorfer Strand there are many riding stables from which the beach can be reached quickly. Otherwise, you can also park a horse trailer in one of the large parking spaces right near the beach. And from there you can start an unforgettable tour along the beach. The beach section from Niendorf to Sierksdorf is over 10 kilometers long. And a Baltic Sea holiday with a dog is also ideal in winter because these four-legged friends are also allowed on the beaches.

4. Wellness massages: find relaxation and peace

What could be better than getting a real workout on the Baltic Sea beach after a cool winter day? After a really good wellness massage and heat therapy, you will definitely feel like a new person. This brings life back to the tired limbs.

5. Ostseetherme and Co: Off to the sauna!

Along the Baltic Sea coast there are plenty of opportunities to really sweat out your stress in the sauna, go for a swim and relax in the whirlpool. The best options certainly include the wellness offers at the Grömitzer Welle in Grömitz, the Bayside Hotel in Scharbeutz and the Ostseetherme (also Scharbeutz). You can really unwind in the huge sauna areas or simply go for a swim indoors!

6. Torch walks on the beach: bring light into the dark season

The torchlight hike probably falls into the category of “deluxe beach walk” and is one of the romantic experiences with which you can make your partner happy, for example. Wrapped up tightly, the group goes across the Baltic Sea beach with torches. A local fisherman tells exciting stories and afterwards there are delicious alcoholic hot drinks to warm you up. An unforgettable experience when visiting the Baltic Sea in winter.

7. Karls Erdbeerhof Warnsdorf: always worth a trip

You will find a whole world of your own at Karl's strawberry farm in Warnsdorf. Contrary to what the name suggests, it is open all year round and as locals we stop by there at regular intervals. There is an exciting outdoor adventure world for kids, a café and a restaurant where the food is delicious and affordable. You can find a great organic farmer's market at Karls Fruchthof Warnsdorf where you can get homemade jam, homemade sausage and much more. Also highly recommended: the handmade, fun, playful teapots and coffee cups with a strawberry design, which are simply an eye-catcher at home.

8. Winter events in the Bay of Lübeck: Advent markets, Fischers Wiehnacht and Co.

In the Bay of Lübeck there are numerous events in winter that will brighten up the dark season with hot drinks, colorful lights and lots of action. These include Advent markets, activities such as the giant Advent calendar in Neustadt in Holstein, the Dünenmeile on ICE in Scharbeutz and many other attractions with lots of light, mulled punch and friendly people that are guaranteed to warm your heart and make the Baltic Sea a magical place in winter .

9. Shopping and strolling in Timmendorfer beach and Scharbeutz: shops for every taste

Of course you can also just go shopping. There is a lot to discover in Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf in winter, especially for fashion fans. The shops here have great winter fashion in their range from early autumn onwards and you can stroll through the shops at your leisure and stock up on the latest trends. Of course, you will also find lots of nice little boutiques here that offer handmade products and gifts for your loved ones.

10. Stop and warm up: Cozy restaurants and cafés in Scharbeutz and the surrounding area

After a long winter walk on the Baltic Sea or a torchlight hike on the beach, you can warm up in one of the numerous restaurants and cafés in Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand and the surrounding area. The Bay of Lübeck has many culinary highlights to offer where you can indulge yourself.
