Travel report Koh Lipe – tips & experiences in paradise

by

The Thai island of Koh Lipe is a beautiful travel destination nestled in the Tarutao National Park in the southernmost part of Thailand right on the border with Malaysia. It's not without reason that the area around it is called the Maldives of Thailand. You will find really fantastic palm beaches, warm water like in a bathtub, cute little resorts, quaint bars and restaurants and extremely hospitable locals on site. In my travel report about Koh Lipe I describe my personal experiences and have put together everything you need to know about leisure activities and things to do.

Koh Lipe – that sounds so beautiful, literally like love. And that's exactly what happened to me when I visited the little island in paradise: I immediately fell in love with it. We didn't even want to travel there. We wanted to go to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Railay Beach, but not further south. The owner of a diving center Phuket gave me his insider tips for Thailand. And among them was the suggestion to go to Koh Lipe.

Long journey to Koh Lipe

So we considered that. At first we were slightly overwhelmed as to how we were going to get there. The island is really a short distance from Phuket. We hesitated for a moment, but then decided to take the crossing to Koh Lipe. So we looked: Go to Krabi by land? Maybe even fly? Or should we take the comfortable speedboat?

Neither: We booked the wrong ferry and spent twelve hours traveling to the island on an old, rusty steamer. The sea was rough and we had the feeling of capsizing several times along the way. But in the end we arrived - and lo and behold: it was a little paradise at the end of the world that awaited us. A tiny island in the middle of the Tarutao Archipelago, also known as the “Maldives of Thailand”.

Below I have picked out a great video for you with aerial photos from Koh Lipe. Unfortunately, when I was there, I didn't have my drone with me and my camera wasn't up to date at the time. The video gives you an excellent impression of this beautiful island.

My first Koh Lipe experiences - honest, authentic, changing

The small dream island of Koh Lipe and the islands in the surrounding Tarutao National Park are also known as the Maldives of Thailand.

The day after Koh Lipe was recommended to us, we set off from Phuket very early in the morning to Koh Lipe. Thailand is still sleeping and of course our taxi doesn't come. But luckily an ancient local bus chugs along the way, so we drive - at a snail's pace - to the pier in Phuket Town and get the speedboat to Koh Lanta at the last minute. The boat is full and we are crammed into a small nutshell. What begins is an almost twelve-hour odyssey. If we had known what to expect next, we would have gotten out and swam back.

12 hours travel to Koh Lipe – was it worth it?

I don't know if we booked it that way or if our boat was simply exchanged. On the way, due to rough seas, the speedboat had to be exchanged for a stone-old, rusty steamer, which is even less trustworthy and with which we then rock the Andaman Sea southwards in stormy rain and meter-high waves - a total of ten endless hours for a tour that would normally be Lasts 1,5 hours. Koh Lipe also doesn't give us a friendly welcome with pouring rain. We reach our lonely, remote retreat completely soaked and with the last of our strength. Our nerves are at their wits' end and we ask ourselves: Was it really worth it?

Of course it was worth it

After our arrival we experienced an island that could hardly be more paradisiacal and rustic. Of course there are a lot of tourists there - we're in Thailand, what do you think? Even in the most remote corner everything is full of holidaymakers. In particular, many Malaysians come by ferry from Langkawi to visit the island for a short vacation. And they will already know where things are good in their neighborhood. The island is really a dream that is worth the long journey. The small beaches, the wide beaches, the quaint, lively walking street and the numerous small resorts, which are generally a little more expensive on Koh Lipe than elsewhere. There is a good reason for this: Thailand can hardly be more remote. All logistics are carried out by ferry. And you'll find lots of delicious restaurants on the island, all of which we tested one by one.

Dive, eat and relax

Now you are on the most beautiful dream island far and wide. And what do you do with your free time? Exactly, you have to think about that carefully. I went snorkeling every day right on the beach in front of our resort. There you will find a beautiful, inviting reef with small fish and pretty corals. And as a diver, of course I have that Diving on Koh Lipe tried out. The Tarutao National Park, which also includes Koh Lipe, has definitely turned out to be one of the most beautiful diving areas in Thailand.

Koh Lipe vacation - in a remote resort on a dream beach

Our resort is the most remote on the island - and when we stand in front of our bamboo bungalow the morning after our arrival, not only is the sun shining on us, but also a unique view. Koh Lipe welcomes us today in the brightest shades of blue. The Pitiusas Beach Resort Koh Lipe is secluded on a secluded beach. “Welcome to paradise,” greets us the owner Tao, a Spaniard from Mallorca’s neighboring island of Ibiza, who runs his own resort in Thailand in winter. Every year he adds a few bungalows – all on his own. In the European summer he works for a world-famous discotheque on the Balearic island.

Don't tell everyone about this place, only your closest friends!

Tao, owner of Pitiusas Beach Resort

Owner Tao has fulfilled his dream on Koh Lipe

Pitiusas is an old name for the part of the Balearic Islands that includes Ibiza and Formentera. This place will be the starting point for our trips and excursions in the next few days. Don't get the wrong idea about the size of the island. You can walk around it in an hour and after a day or two you really have seen everything. The remote resort in the middle of the jungle is a dream. Maybe ten bungalows on stilts overlooking a tiny, deserted beach. Tao was inspired by the movie "The Beach" and tells me: "Don't tell anyone about this place, only your closest friends!" Not only was the arduous journey worth it, we ended up in paradise!

Koh Lipe is a real destination for travelers - still

In general, Koh Lipe! This island is a tiny piece of land in the very south of the Adaman Sea on the border with Malaysia, diagonally opposite Langkawi. It would be presumptuous to claim that it is not very touristy - this term is absolutely relative in Asia, but compared to islands like Samui or Phuket, Koh Lipe is much quieter. The small island has a walking street that leads off the main beach and splits into various smaller paths that lead to beaches and resorts. There are few cars and the main means of transport are flip flops and moped taxis.

Mixed audience

You can walk around the entire island in less than an hour. The audience is completely mixed: many Asian and European tourists - many of them are young travelers with backpacks, but there are also many young families with small children and older people on the island. The further you move away from the center of Koh Lipe, the more authentic the island becomes and with a little skill you can reach corners where the locals still live in a very original way.

Hallmark: dream beaches

The hallmarks of Koh Lipe are definitely the dream beaches that are located around the island and the loving, friendly and helpful locals, who you can get to know personally after a few days with a little interest and friendliness. The restaurants are great - and for people like us who already eat Thai food five times a week at home in Hamburg, it's a godsend!

Koh Lipe - Beaches are the hallmark of the island

The most beautiful bays of the dream island

If you come to Koh Lipe, you should like kitschy sunsets and dream beaches. In addition to the island's three large beaches, there are also many small bays around the small island where, with a bit of luck, you can stay all alone and enjoy the sunset as a couple while holding hands with your loved one. The north side of the island in particular is still full of such small mini-beaches. This is also where Sunset Beach is located, where the sunset can be best seen.

1. Pattaya Beach

Pattaya Beach on Koh Lipe is the main beach where the ferries dock and where the walking street of Koh Lipe begins and ends. Accordingly, the beach is overcrowded and parked with boats. But there are also wonderful beach bars that are worth a visit. For swimming and sunbathing you should choose another beach.

2. Sunrise Beach

Sunrise Beach is the longest beach on the island and is on the side where the sun rises. There are many great resorts here and the water is fantastic for swimming. The beach has a curve from which there is a great view of the neighboring island. The sea here is really perfect for swimming!

3. Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is close to Pitiusas Resort. In addition to the main beach, there are many small bays where the hotels are located. Staying in one of these properties gives you an even better view of the sunset than Sunset Beach itself.

Leisure activities and sights on Koh Lipe – the best tips

What you can do and discover on holiday on the island

Koh Lipe not only offers breathtaking beaches, but also a variety of leisure activities and sights. Those who spend their holidays on the small island should definitely take the opportunity to explore the area and take advantage of the numerous opportunities.

1. Diving and snorkeling

A highlight is diving and snorkeling, as the underwater world around the island and in Tarutao National Park is pristine and rich in marine life. There are several excellent diving schools on the island that you can tour with. The OceanPro Divers I was traveling with are particularly recommended. If you want something a little easier, just grab a mask and snorkel and explore the underwater world in the bays on your own.

2. Stand up paddling and kayaking

Another great way to explore the island from the water is stand up paddling and kayaking. Stand Up Paddling around the island is an absolute must and is in no way inferior to SUP on the Maldives. A trip to the Koh Adang Viewpoint is also recommended, from where you have a wonderful view of Koh Lipe. Sunset Beach offers the best view of the island.

3. Visit temples

Those interested in culture should visit the Wat Hantalay temple on Koh Lipe. The temple is on the way to Sunset Beach and looks quite unspectacular, but is still worth a visit. The temple is more like an artistically designed forest with a small Buddha statue in a wooden hut and looks very beautiful and lovingly artistically designed.

4. Shopping in Walking Street

Koh Lipe's Walking Street is a great place to stock up on Thai handicrafts. Especially recommended are the ointments and balms for the skin. Walking Street is also home to some of the island's biggest and best massage parlors. The Thai massage provides deep relaxation and is highly recommended. The masseuses are friendly, courteous and know their craft.

In summary, Koh Lipe not only offers beautiful beaches, but also a variety of leisure activities and sights. Those who spend their holidays on the small island should take the time to explore the area and take advantage of the many opportunities.

Restaurants and bars on Koh Lipe

Delicious food on every corner

Koh Lipe not only offers paradisiacal beaches and crystal clear water, but also a wide range of restaurants and bars. The island is known for its stylish restaurant and pub culture, which has something to offer for every taste. In addition to the restaurants along Walking Street that offer typical Thai cuisine, there are also many restaurants and bars in the immediate vicinity of the resorts that spoil their guests with excellent food and refreshing drinks.

1. On The Rocks at Serendipity Resort

Standing just six meters above the waves, this bar and restaurant overlooks the beach with views of the surrounding islands of the national park. The well-kept restaurant has three levels and, with its direct location by the sea, creates an atmosphere that invites families or groups to enjoy romantic dinners.

2. Maya Bar

A small open air bar in the middle of Walking Street that serves delicious cocktails and other alcoholic drinks. The bar is so centrally located that you can hardly avoid it and end up here on the way to the resort in the evening. This is not least due to the extremely friendly staff and the other sociable guests.

3. Castaway Bar & Restaurant

Of course you shouldn't confuse Sunrise Beach with Sunset Beach! In any case, the Castaway Bar is unmistakable: a family atmosphere is combined here with delicious drinks and very good food. The front of the restaurant and bar is lined with a large covered terrace with cushions and low tables where you can gaze out over the sea. There are salas on the beach where you can sit in the shade and look out to sea.

4. Mellow Mango

Yellow Mango offers excellent local cuisine that you should definitely try. It is also located on Pattaya Beach, the island's main beach. Unlike many other places, Yellow Mango offers excellent service.

(Unfortunately permanently closed!)

5. Monkey Restaurant

A bar and restaurant located approximately in the middle of Pattaya Beach. The restaurant is run by a so-called Chao Lay, a local sea gypsy and fisherman, and is family-owned. The Chao Lay are warm-hearted and friendly people who will hug you and make you feel at home.

6. Pooh’s Bar on Walking Street (Pooh Highway)

Pooh’s Bar was one of the first bars on Koh Lipe and is still one of the most popular today. Pooh and his staff have lived on the island for many years and run a very professional and clean business. The restaurant is located directly on Walking Street.

Cafe Lipe on Pattaya Beach

Cafe Lipe offers a mix of Western and Thai specialties with fresh coffee, freshly baked bread, cakes and possibly the best granola in the south of Thailand.

Reggae bar on Pattaya Beach

This bar was regularly our go-to place: once you grab a lounge chair on the beach and have a cold beer in your hand, the evenings can be long. This bar is a classic Thai reggae bar. The ambience of Loka is really very nice as the whole place is built from natural materials and offers all kinds of delicacies.

Hotels and resorts on Koh Lipe

The most beautiful hideaways in the very south of Thailand

When looking for suitable accommodation, however, you should keep in mind that the hotels on Koh Lipe are relatively expensive. In return, you usually get accommodation with direct beach access and private access to pristine bays. Here are a few tips for hotels you might like:

1. Pitiusas Beach Resort

This small complex is as remote as possible on the other side of the island. It is run by Tao, a Spaniard from Ibiza, who built the entire resort himself and runs it himself during the high winter season. The food is above average and the bungalows, built into the hillside, are new and spacious with air conditioning. The highlight of this accommodation is clearly the beachfront with a wonderful small sandy beach, with some small reefs for snorkeling in front of it.

In the evening you can have a cocktail on the terrace while watching the beautiful sunset and end the day. If you want, you can have owner Tao teach you how to fish. By Thai standards, an overnight stay is not exactly cheap, but for this unique resort you are happy to accept the extra charge!

According to Google, Pitiusas Beach Resort is unfortunately temporarily closed.

2. Serendipity Beach Resort

The Serendipity Beach Resort is located in the immediate vicinity of the Pitiusas Resort. The hotel is even more luxurious and belongs more to the upscale category and, in addition to various, luxuriously furnished villas, also offers an excellent restaurant with a roof terrace. Some accommodations even have their own infinity pool. The beach is not quite as beautiful as at Pitiusas, as there are already bungalows with direct beach access and the beach is therefore somewhat overbuilt.

Thanks to the luxurious ambience and a rather upscale category, the Serendipity Beach Resort offers everything that meets the needs of luxury fans.

3. Castaway Beach Resort

Another really nice resort is on the other side of Koh Lipe: The Castaway Beach Resort. It is located on the east side of Koh Lipe at the southern end of Sunrise Beach. Most of the year, the speedboats have to anchor outside the reef - and from there you can be picked up directly by the Castaway Resort and taken to the hotel.

At the resort, visitors can really unwind in the hammock! Each bungalow has a shaded balcony with seating cushions and hammocks. The front of the restaurant and bar is a large covered terrace with cushions and low tables where you can gaze out over the sea. There are salas on the beach where you can sit in the shade. Our house coral reef is located right in front of the beach and can be explored by snorkeling and diving.

The Cast Away Resort has a small massage center in town, where guests can have a Wat Pho – traditional Thai massage – massage and really relax. The resort also has its own diving school, Castaway Divers. From here you can start adventurous dives in the surrounding national park.

Travel information Koh Lipe - best travel time, arrival, worth knowing

Anyone who has traveled the long way to the southernmost tourist island in Thailand will certainly want to spend a few days on the island. I have put together the most important information about getting there, the best time to travel and the garbage problem (which unfortunately occurs in many places in Southeast Asia).

A trip to Koh Lipe can be a real challenge. The island is difficult to reach and there are some obstacles on the way there. But the trip is worth it as Koh Lipe is one of the most beautiful spots in Thailand and a paradise for divers, snorkelers and beach lovers.

Planning and preparing for arrival

Koh Lipe is so remote that it is not that easy to get to the remote dream island. Speedboats and regular ferries run from Phuket to Koh Lipe. You make various stops along the way, for example at the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Lanta and various stops along the way. Speedboats also depart from Langkawi in Malaysia towards the island. In any case, you should plan a lot of time for the trip - and if you get a queasy stomach while boating, you should definitely pack some travel tablets. If possible, you should always choose the speedboat over the normal ferry, even if it is cheaper. The speedboat saves a few hours of time and a lot more nerves.

Coming from Phuket

Those traveling from Phuket should keep in mind that the journey can be very tiring. Roads are narrow and winding and traffic jams can occur. The drive from Phuket to Pakbara, the departure port for the ferries to Koh Lipe, takes about 5 hours. There are two ways to get to Koh Lipe from Pakbara: by speedboat or by ferry. The speedboat ride takes about 1,5 hours and the ferry ride takes about 3 hours. The choice depends on your budget and travel comfort. Speedboats are more expensive but offer a faster and more comfortable travel experience.

Arrival from Krabi

From Krabi, the first stop is Pakbara. Buses, taxis, and minivans travel to Pakbara from Krabi. The journey takes about 2,5 hours. From Pakbara you can take either a speedboat or a ferry to Koh Lipe. During the crossing you have to be prepared for difficult conditions. The sea can be very choppy with strong swell and rough seas. If you are prone to seasickness, you should take appropriate precautions.

Best time to go to Koh Lipe

The best time to visit Koh Lipe is from mid-December to April. This is the time when the chance of lots of sunshine is greatest. But even outside of this best travel time, Koh Lipe is worth a trip. We were there in the first half of November and were also able to enjoy the time. It did rain every now and then, but at the same time there were longer periods of continuous sunshine. You are usually on the safe side from January to March.

Garbage problem on Koh Lipe

Unfortunately there is also a garbage problem on Koh Lipe caused by tourism and the lack of infrastructure. It is all the more important that travelers make sure to dispose of their rubbish properly and generally maintain a sustainable lifestyle. You should be careful not to use plastic bottles, but to use returnable bottles and fill them up at the numerous gas stations. You should also avoid plastic cutlery and packaging when eating and generally prefer local products.

In summary, while getting to Koh Lipe is long and sometimes arduous, a visit to this paradise is definitely worth it. The best travel time is from November to April and you should make sure to dispose of your garbage properly and live sustainably.

What is the best way to get to Koh Lipe?

The quickest and easiest way to reach Koh Lipe is by speedboat or ferry from Pak Bara or other surrounding islands such as Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta or Phuket. You can also fly to Hat Yai and from there take a taxi or minibus to Pak Bara. From there you can take a ferry or speedboat to Koh Lipe.
However, it should be noted that transportation to and from the island may sometimes be limited due to weather conditions or unforeseen events. It is therefore advisable to plan the trip carefully and to find out in advance about possible transport problems.

Travel report Koh Lipe - one of the most beautiful travel destinations of my life

My conclusion

Koh Lipe is one of the most beautiful destinations I have visited in my life. The island is simply beautiful and the beaches are breathtaking. Although Koh Lipe is developed for tourism, it is still a relatively quiet and relaxed destination. Here you can really switch off and enjoy the beauty of nature. Our trip to the small island was certainly an experience that I will tell my grandchildren about.

The journey is worth it

Getting there can be exhausting and adventurous, but the island is definitely worth it. If you plan enough time and prepare well, you can manage the trip without major problems. Koh Lipe is a paradise for divers and snorkelers, but also for those who just want to relax on the beach. The restaurants and bars on the island are cozy and the food is really tasty. Another plus of Koh Lipe is the friendliness of the locals. They are very warm and helpful and really make you feel at home on the island.

Don't ignore the garbage problem

That's a bit of a downer on the island Garbage problem, which unfortunately also exists in other parts of Southeast Asia. You should pay attention to disposing of your garbage and protecting the environment. All in all, I can fully recommend Koh Lipe as a travel destination. The island has so much to offer and is a real dream destination. I hope to return soon to discover more of the island's beauty.
