Egypt remains one of the most popular destinations for a sunny and warm beach holiday. Warm temperatures practically all year round, bright blue skies with lots of sunshine and comfortable, luxurious hotels on beautiful beaches on the Red Sea tempt you. At the same time, the travel destination in North Africa is unbeatably cheap. In my travel report about Egypt I answer the most important questions: What are the most beautiful vacation spots and hotels? What leisure activities and sights are there? And is it even safe in Egypt? I have put together my personal experiences in Egypt, the most important tips and recommendations, inspiration and travel information for your holiday on the Red Sea.

I would like to shorten it to one sentence: Egypt is always possible. There is also a very special reason for this: a trip to the land of the pharaohs offers a guarantee of sunshine that is hard to beat. You simply don't have to worry about the holiday weather. On the Red Sea you can rely on beautiful weather almost all year round. “Almost” means that it is cloudy on a few days and rains on even fewer days. It rained for three days last year, someone recently told me Marsa Alam.
Compared to other destinations like Mallorca or Canary IslandsIt rains in , where not only rising living costs but also comparatively unpredictable weather - especially in spring and autumn - can ruin your vacation Egypt only very rarely and most of the time you are accompanied by bright sunshine. The best time to travel is all year round and you can be sure that it will always be warm and sunny.
Video – What you need to know before your trip to Egypt
Below I have picked out an exciting video for you in which you will learn a lot about what you need to know before traveling to the land of the Pharaohs.
Always nice and warm and sunny in Egypt
And that is exactly the most important reason why a holiday in Egypt is practically always possible - regardless of whether it is during the peak season in spring, summer and autumn or in January in the depths of winter. Some people talk about a sun guarantee. Sun guarantee means that there is a very high chance that you will have dry and nice weather on most days of your holiday.
But you also have to know that the weather is unpredictable - I've seen it cloudy and rainy in Egypt. In my opinion, the best time to travel is from March to May and from September to December because it is neither too hot nor too cold at this time.
Egypt always works. There is also a very special reason for this: a trip to the land of the pharaohs offers a guarantee of sunshine that is hard to beat.

Numerous advantages of a holiday in Egypt
But of course the sun and the warm weather are not the only advantages of a holiday on the Red Sea, as I would like to show you in my detailed Egypt travel report. Because many of the hospitable locals are just as bright as the sunshine towards holidaymakers. If you want, you will make loyal friends on every trip to Egypt who will still keep in touch with you even years later. Even after years, we are still in close contact with some of our friends via Whatsapp and Instagram.
Another point is the accommodation. The Hotels and resorts in Egypt are often luxurious and offer guests a lot of service for comparatively little money. If you look around a bit, you'll find one price-performance winner next to the other on the Red Sea. In Egypt you get a lot of luxury for comparatively little money. There are often all-inclusive offers and wellness packages that make your stay even more pleasant. We recently had a very professional massage - for only 35 euros per massage per hour.
A lot of performance for comparatively little money
Adventure awaits you in Egypt beneath the surface of the sea. The real highlight of a holiday on the Red Sea is the breathtaking underwater world. In the sea, you can snorkel and dive along colorful coral reefs to see exotic fish and marine life such as turtles, rays, Egyptian sharks, manatees, dolphins and even the occasional whale shark.
Since I got my diving license in 2005, I have been diving in Egypt several times and have done hundreds of dives on the colorful reefs. I am always amazed at the diversity of this habitat - diving in Egypt never gets boring.

Travel report Egypt - the most beautiful vacation spots on the Red Sea
My experiences with the regions
Over the last 20 years, I have traveled to Egypt about 20 times and explored the country's most beautiful vacation spots. I can't say exactly - it was definitely very often. I think I have experienced a lot in the land of the Pharaohs, many different ones Hotels in Egypt visited, and can therefore say that many of the holiday destinations are really worth a trip.
Basically, the places are similar - no matter whether you go to Marsa Alam or to Sharm El Sheikh - you will stay there in your great hotel, usually well away from the next larger city, enjoy the sun and the Red Sea and pamper yourself let. Of course, you can also take a trip to the next larger city or further trips to the temples and pyramids within the country. However, experience shows that this is more the exception than the rule. You spend most of your time in the hotel or in the immediate surroundings.
As a diver, I prefer the resorts on the Red Sea
I've been on vacation to Egypt so many times because the Red Sea is such a wonderful place to dive. This is the main reason why I have visited Egypt so often. And that's why I preferred to visit the holiday resorts on the Red Sea and not Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. I've been there for a few trips, but never for a whole vacation. My Red Sea places visited include Dahab, El Quseir, Hurghada, Makadi Bay, Marsa Alam, Port Ghalib, Safaga, Sharm El Sheikh and Soma Bay (in alphabetical order). Many of these places offer beautiful hotels and the opportunity to really relax on vacation.
Of course, I also took trips to Cairo and Luxor to see the ancient sites, the temples and pyramids of Giza. I had an experienced guide in Cairo and was even able to see the real local neighborhoods - not just the cosmopolitan, international city center. Cairo is an incredible juggernaut that you can definitely visit for a day or even several days on vacation. But I have to tell you right away: it's not relaxing. A trip to Cairo is rather strenuous and adventurous, but you experience a lot.
My favorite region: Marsa Alam
What I like best is the Marsa Alam region in the very south of the Red Sea - from Port Ghalib and further south. Because it is incredibly quiet there, more natural and authentic. Most holidaymakers land in Hurghada and don't want to drive that far to the hotel - which is understandable. Therefore you stay either in Hurghada, in Makadi Bay, in Soma Bay or Safaga. The further south you go, the less touristy it becomes.
Marsa Alam also has an international airport. However, this is not accessed very often. Therefore, anyone who takes the long journey south will be rewarded for it. You get beautiful, secluded beaches, upscale hotels and, above all, an underwater world that is second to none.
You can dive with sharks at the famous Elphinstone Reef or snorkel with dolphins and manatees in the secluded bays. Because the region is so remote, the relaxation factor is particularly high. You have peace and time for yourself if you have planned a relaxing beach vacation. You can also move around the hotels relatively freely because there is often nothing there but desert. But if I were you, I would check this again, especially for the hotel you want to stay at.
Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab
Southern Sinai with the holiday resorts of Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab is also very beautiful. It is particularly quiet there and tends to be rather luxurious. Sharm el Sheikh is home to many excellent luxury hotels where you can spend a wonderful beach holiday and which serve as a starting point for exploring the underwater world of Southern Sinai. I visited some excellent diving spots there and went snorkeling almost every day. If you want to combine luxury with wellness and diving, you've come to the right place.
If you want something even quieter and more secluded, you should visit the small, sleepy town of Dahab. There, too, everything revolves around diving and the relaxed lifestyle. There are numerous beach bars on the promenade and of course every hotel has a diving school. Dahab, for example, is home to the world-famous and infamous Blue Hole, where divers regularly jump into the water. From Dahab I went on a camel tour to the Sinai lasting several days, a particularly beautiful experience that exudes a touch of adventure.
Hurghada – I don’t like this place at all
While most Red Sea resorts are great, whether you're in Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay, Safaga, El Quseir or Marsa Alam, you're likely to have a wonderful time. Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab and El Gouna are also wonderful places to spend a beach holiday, wellness holiday or diving holiday in excellent, upscale hotels.
But there is one place I avoid like the devil avoids holy water - and that is Hurghada. The holiday resort is an overcrowded juggernaut for budget holidaymakers who spend a mediocre holiday in huge hotel complexes. I'm not a fan of the place at all. Over time, I had to spend the night there from time to time - and was always happy when I was able to leave Hurghada again. Because it couldn't be more touristy.
Photos – impressions from the most beautiful holiday resorts on the Red Sea
Below I have a few travel pictures for you that will give you a good impression of how beautiful the Red Sea is. In my Egypt travel report I would like to show you that a vacation in the land of the pharaohs is worth it.

My tips and recommendations for leisure activities
I came to Egypt most often to dive and snorkel - and that's why this is a crucial aspect in all the travel reports about Egypt that I have written so far. This is by far the number one leisure activity on holiday in Egypt. The underwater world of the Red Sea with colorful coral reefs, millions of fish and large sea creatures like dolphins, manatees, sharks, rays and of course turtles make it a must to go into the water with a diving mask on vacation. The true splendor of Egypt lies below the surface of the water.
But you won't get bored on land either. You can do an incredible amount. The most popular leisure activities include camel tours, quad biking and jeep tours in the desert, but also trips to the nearest larger towns to shop to your heart's content at the bazaar.
You can also do a lot on the boat. You can take a boat tour to remote, small islands and sandbanks, where you can make yourself comfortable far away from the crowds of tourists. I will treat the larger excursions within Egypt to the pyramids of Giza or the temples of Luxor separately.
The list of sports options and Leisure activities in Egypt is very long. If you want to learn more about ways to be active while traveling, you should read my detailed post about it.
Diving and snorkeling are the top leisure activities
Even if you're not a water lover and don't like putting your head under water - you have to try it out on your holiday in Egypt. The Red Sea is the real splendor in the land of the pharaohs. While everything on land is barren, the tropical rainforest in Egypt is located in the Red Sea. I've been there over 20 times now Diving and snorkeling on site – and I can tell you, it’s really worth it. You can see more animals in ten minutes of diving than in ten hours in a forest.
I swam with dolphins, did shake hands with the Marsa Alam manatee, went diving with sharks and saw so many turtles in the sea in Egypt that I can no longer count them. I'm not trying to brag - I'm telling you: Get in the water to snorkel and dive and you probably won't regret it.
Tours with camels, horses, quads and jeeps
That, in turn, is something you can do, but you don't have to. Almost every hotel offers camel tours and quad bike tours. If you've never done something like this before, feel free to try it out. You ride a camel or horse along the beach or towards the desert. It's a lot of fun with family and loved ones. When it comes to horses, you as a rider should check whether you are allowed to ride yourself or whether you will be guided. This gives you one of the rare opportunities to go horseback riding on the beach - which is a wonderful experience.
But if you've done all of this before, you can safely avoid it. These are typical tourist activities. Tours with quads and jeeps are even more touristy. You usually start on Hotel, drive along the beach for a bit and then towards the desert. The group often stops at a Bedouin camp, where on the one hand - a positive aspect - you get to know the Bedouin culture, and on the other hand - a negative aspect - you often spend a long time in a tent where the hosts want to sell you things .
A jeep tour is similar. At the end of the day you will have seen a lot of sand and barren mountains. That can be nice too. But I don't have to have that on every holiday in Egypt.
Going swimming and soaking up the sun is the order of the day
Instead, you should take advantage of the moment and soak up the sun on the beach or by the pool. You have probably booked all inclusive and can have cocktails, coffee and snacks served on your lounger. If you're not diving and snorkeling, this is a really wonderful leisure activity on your Egypt holiday.
You don't necessarily have to do anything. And if you feel the urge to move, take a short walk on the jetty or splash around in the Red Sea.
You can take sunbathing and swimming to the extreme by taking a day trip to a remote beach where there are few other vacationers. Especially in the Marsa Alam region you will find untouched, beautiful bays with crystal clear water where you can retreat to relax. You have the Red Sea all to yourself.
Do sports and discover the surroundings
Besides diving and snorkeling, I love doing sports in Egypt. On the one hand, I make a lot of use of the often good fitness facilities in the hotel with treadmills and strength training machines. On the other hand, I love swimming laps in the pool every day. Not only can you splash around, you can also swim for real sport. At the hotel you have a whole range of options.
You can often also play tennis and volleyball, or even try out sports like archery. But my favorite activity is jogging in the desert. You can go exploring outside of the hotel and burn a lot of calories at the same time.

Travel report Egypt - places to visit and excursion tips during your vacation
In recent years I have had the opportunity to travel to the breathtakingly beautiful and diverse country of Egypt numerous times. The Red Sea became my personal retreat - a retreat where I spent most of my vacation. Why not - you'll find lots of great hotels where you can let yourself be pampered to the fullest.
You can find wonderful relaxation in the more upscale hotels. And of course I tried out the numerous leisure activities. Whether snorkeling in the colorful underwater world or sunbathing on the beach, the Red Sea took me away from everyday life and brought me relaxation.
If you get bored on a beach vacation - go exploring
But sooner or later you'll get bored - and the German management of the dive center happens to know a private driver who is reliable. And a short time later you find yourself on a longer excursion within Egypt. You can easily travel from the Red Sea to Cairo - and there also to the pyramids of Giza - to Luxor and to Aswan.
You can also take a domestic flight from Hurghada to Sinai or Alexandria. And that was it for the quiet beach vacation. Suddenly you find yourself in the middle of the hustle and bustle of this fascinating desert state. If you want more about the Sights in Egypt If you would like to find out more, you can also read our detailed article about it.
Cairo is a must for Egypt vacationers
I wanted to save money and took a local bus to Cairo. The lively capital is a real juggernaut with over 20 million people - and at the same time an unforgettable experience. The hustle and bustle, the colorful markets like Khan el Khalili, the aromatic spectrum of Egyptian spices and the hospitable people left a lasting impression. On the outskirts of the city are also the pyramids of Giza, guardians of time and witnesses to an era long past.
Over time the city grew closer and closer to the pyramids. The sight of these monumental tombs, especially at sunset, when they are bathed in a golden light, is always breathtaking. I rode a camel to the pyramids, which was a truly incomparable experience.
From the Red Sea you can get to Luxor quite quickly
From the Red Sea you can get to Luxor with a private driver in just under three hours to see the temples. You can go on a day trip or plan an overnight stay - both are possible. Karnak Temple's towering pillars, soaring statues and hieroglyph-covered walls are living textbooks of history, telling tales of gods and kings. A walk through the Valley of the Kings, where the tomb of Tutankhamun is located, is like traveling back in time.
Visit to Sinai
Even if you are vacationing in Hurghada, you can fly from Hurghada to Sharm El Sheikh with a domestic flight. Egypt Air uses very new and comfortable aircraft on the route. The trip is very pleasant. And it's worth it: Sharm El Sheikh awaits you on the Sinai with its beautiful old town and the large mosque. But you can also take a trip to St. Catherine's Monastery - a place of deep spiritual reflection.
Surrounded by a harsh but breathtakingly beautiful landscape, this ancient monastery almost feels like a gateway to another world. It was fascinating to see the ancient manuscripts and experience the silence. Each trip to Egypt has deepened my love for this country, and although I have been there many times, each visit feels like the first time, full of discovery and wonder.
Photos – further inspiration for Egypt’s sights
Below I have some inspiring photos of the sights in Egypt. You should take into account that a tour like this can be quite stressful. But you experience a lot.

Travel report Egypt - one of the most beautiful travel destinations?
My conclusion
As I said at the beginning: Egypt always works. As you know, I like to travel a lot and in a variety of ways. I rarely return to a destination I've already been to. However, I always find myself booking a vacation to Egypt. And there's a good reason for that: the country is really incredibly tempting because you can be relatively sure that it will be sunny and warm there. Especially in tropical ones destinations you have to worry that it can be rainy and cloudy for days. That is not the case in Egypt.
Excellent value for money
In addition, this country simply offers excellent value for money. The hotels are often very luxurious and at the same time surprisingly cheap, so you can easily stay a few days longer.
Intact coral reefs
And last but not least, the diving and snorkeling is of a quality that you cannot find anywhere else in Europe. With the Red Sea, Egypt has a diving area that is globally competitive. In many great tropical destinations you now have coral bleaching and the reefs are dying.
Not so in Egypt: The coral reefs are still wonderfully intact in many places and you can discover so much. And that is exactly the reason why I will continue to come to Egypt in the future to explore new regions, new hotels and new diving areas.
