Travel report Canary Islands – tips & experiences for the favorite islands

by

The Canary Islands have always had a very special magic for me. Seen from mainland Europe, the archipelago is so close and still offers the advantages of a subtropical long-distance travel destination with lots of sun, warmth and relaxation. Especially since Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Co. are so incredibly different - each has its own special advantages. The islands of eternal spring are a year-round travel destination par excellence for us Europeans. In my travel report Canary Islands (Canary Islands) I have put together the most important information for you with many valuable tips, my personal experiences and the most important FAQs.

For most of us the question is not: Have you ever been to the Canary Islands? But: When was the last time you went to the Canaries and on which island? The islands of eternal spring are so incredibly diverse and are suitable for so many different types of holidays: family holidays, active holidays, hiking holidays, diving holidays, wellness holidays or just a good and cheap package holiday.

The seven large islands are much more than just a worthwhile alternative to the typical Mediterranean destinations, a cheap winter destination or simply a good way to ensure that your holiday destination is warm in spring. The islands off the northwest coast of Africa are simply indispensable as a holiday destination.

My personal Canary Islands experiences - and what you can learn from them

The Canary Islands are always worth a trip for me. During my visits I did many different activities and always discovered new, fascinating sides of the islands. I particularly enjoyed this Diving made because the Canary Islands offer an incredibly diverse underwater world. Here I was able to admire different species of fish, rays and even sea turtles.

But there is also a lot to discover above water: I drove from island to island in a rental car and looked at the sights. Each island has its own advantages and highlights, such as the spectacular Teide volcano on Tenerife or the impressive lunar landscape on Lanzarote.

Another feature of the Canary Islands is their unique culture and identity. Although the islands are part of Spain, they have their own cuisine, language and culture. I was particularly impressed by the Canarian cuisine: In the traditional tascas and bodegas I was able to try local specialties such as papas arrugadas, mojo and gofio and convince myself of the variety and freshness of the ingredients.

For me, the Canary Islands are a perfect travel destination because they offer a mixture of the exotic and the familiar. The islands can be reached quickly and easily from Central Europe and yet you feel like you are in another world. I have learned a lot about the culture and history of the Canary Islands on my travels and would highly recommend this experience to any traveller.

In my travel report about the Canary Islands I have summarized all the important information about the islands and give valuable tips for a successful vacation. I'll tell you about my personal experiences and show you which islands are best for which type of vacation. You are guaranteed to find the perfect destination for your next Canary Islands holiday and can experience the unique beauty and diversity of the islands for yourself.

1. Go on tour with the rental car

One of the best ways to explore the Canary Islands is with a rental car tour. Most sights and attractions are spread relatively evenly across the islands and are best reached by car. There are many car rental companies on the islands and prices are usually relatively cheap.

Looks more harmless than it is: some roads in Tenerife have it really in itself - so be careful with the rental car. In the picture: the street of Teresitas on the pass of Anaga. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

However, one should keep in mind that the roads in the Canary Islands are often very narrow and winding, especially when driving in mountainous areas. That is why it is important to be a safe driver and to drive extra carefully. Some roads also lead to dizzying heights and can be difficult to navigate. You should also practice starting off on inclines beforehand, because you may have to stop and start again on steep roads.

Nevertheless, it is worth taking on the challenges, because the Canary Islands offer countless spectacular views and breathtaking landscapes that are best explored by car. From the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote to the green valleys of La Palma, there is something to see and do on every island.

2. Hiking and exploring

One of the best ways to get to know the Canary Islands is hiking. The islands are mostly very mountainous and therefore offer ideal conditions for hiking. The western islands of the Canary Islands in particular are ideal for hiking. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are true natural paradises and offer miles of hiking trails through impressive landscapes. La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro are also ideal destinations for hikers.

The volcano Teide is a highlight on Tenerife and offers many hiking opportunities with different levels of difficulty. The Anaga Nature Park in the north of the island is also an insider tip for hikers. Gran Canaria, on the other hand, offers a spectacular hiking destination with the Roque Nublo and the interior of the island is also very attractive with its green valleys and mountain landscapes.

Those who like it a little more adventurous can also hike on the smaller islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. Here you can still find untouched nature and lonely hiking trails through forests and over mountains. However, you should be well prepared when hiking in the Canary Islands and pay attention to the weather. Especially in summer, the temperatures can be very high and it can quickly become very dry. Sufficient water and sun protection are therefore essential.

In my island-specific Canary Islands travel reports I give valuable tips on the best hiking trails and areas on the Canary Islands. I also give tips on the difficulty of the hikes so that you can find the right tour for you. I will also tell you what equipment you need for a hike in the Canary Islands and what you should pay attention to in order to hike safely and relaxed through nature.

3. Do wellness, relax and really switch off

In addition to the numerous opportunities for hiking and exploring, the Canary Islands also offer ideal conditions for a wellness holiday. Gran Canaria in particular is known for its upscale and luxurious hotels and resorts, which offer perfect conditions for rest and relaxation.

The islands have long recognized the trend towards health, detox, yoga, meditation and fitness and therefore also offer excellent wellness resorts. Many hotels and resorts offer a wide range of wellness options with massages, saunas, whirlpools, yoga courses and much more. There is also a wide range of culinary options on the Canary Islands with many healthy and balanced options.

Another advantage of a wellness holiday in the Canary Islands is the year-round mild climate. The islands have a subtropical climate and therefore offer pleasant temperatures and plenty of sunshine even in the winter months. The perfect climate and relaxed atmosphere on the islands contribute to an all-round relaxing holiday.

In my island specific travel reports I give tips on the best wellness resorts on the Canary Islands. I also give tips on what wellness offers are available and how you can best relax and unwind. You'll find out which hotels and resorts have the best spas and which places are particularly suitable for yoga and meditation. Regardless of whether you are traveling alone, with your partner or with your family, a wellness holiday on the Canary Islands is a wonderful way to escape everyday life and recharge your batteries.

3. Diving in the Canary Islands

If you like diving, the Canary Islands are the right place for you. The waters surrounding the archipelago are incredibly diverse, offering an impressive variety of fish and underwater landscapes. I've dived in the Canary Islands a few times and was pleasantly surprised every time. I can particularly recommend diving in Lanzarote.

There are many diving spots with colorful schools of fish and interesting underwater formations. Particularly worth seeing is the Museo Atlantico, the first underwater museum in the Atlantic in Europe. It is located directly at the Marina Rubicon at the Las Coloradas dive site and is a real highlight for divers.

But the other Canary Islands also offer fantastic diving spots. Tenerife, for example, offers an impressive underwater world with volcanic rock formations and many different species of fish. Gran Canaria is known for its bizarre underwater landscape with spectacular rock formations, caves and tunnels.

El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera are also ideal destinations for divers and offer unique flora and fauna. If you have never dived before, you can take a diving course on the Canary Islands and discover the fascinating underwater world. The diving schools on the islands offer courses for beginners and advanced divers and will accompany you on your dives.

4. Excursions on the water - such as whale watching

For me personally, trips on the water are the absolute highlight in the Canary Islands. The archipelago offers ideal conditions for boat trips and sea excursions. On each of my trips to the Canary Islands, I took at least one boat tour and also tried whale watching and dolphin watching.

The waters around the Canary Islands are known for the presence of various species of whales and dolphins, which often stay close to the coast. Watching these impressive animals in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience and a must for every nature lover.

However, you should be aware that the Atlantic can also be choppy and full of waves. If you are prone to seasickness, you should definitely take travel tablets with you. These can be taken up to two hours before departure and will help prevent nausea.

In addition to whale and dolphin watching, there are many other ways to enjoy the sea in the Canary Islands. For example, you can explore the coastal landscape on a catamaran or sailing boat and swim in hidden bays. Snorkeling and diving in the Canary Islands is also a real experience and offers the opportunity to discover the fascinating underwater world.

Canary Islands – What is there to discover and where?

Just before sunset on Tenerife: wonderful view of the Masca mountains in the evening.

The north of Tenerife tends to be greener and rainier than the dry and barren south, where the sun often shines. The island has a well-developed infrastructure and is therefore a good starting point for travelers who are visiting the Canary Islands for the first time. In addition to the scenic charms, Tenerife also has a lot to offer culturally. For example, visit the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where you will find a beautiful old town, modern art and the famous Auditorio de Tenerife.

Tenerife is a true paradise for sports enthusiasts. The island offers numerous opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, cycling, diving and surfing. One of the most beautiful hikes is the so-called Masca Trail, which leads through an impressive gorge.

Tenerife is also known for its nightlife. Especially in Playa de las Americas there are many bars and clubs where you can turn night into day. But you can also find cozy bars and restaurants with a fantastic selection of local specialties in other places on the island. In my Travelogue Tenerife you will find more insider tips and experiences that will help you make the most of your holiday in Tenerife.

Gran Canaria - a continent on an island

Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands and a real highlight for travelers who like to discover varied landscapes. With a coastline of almost 60 kilometers, Gran Canaria has numerous beautiful sandy beaches that invite you to relax and sunbathe. But that's not all: Gran Canaria also has a spectacular volcanic landscape with volcanic craters and sand dunes.

But that is not all! The island also has a surprisingly green side, with dense forests and an impressive inland reservoir. The landscape of Gran Canaria is so diverse that many travelers refer to it as "a continent unto itself". In addition to the breathtaking landscape, Gran Canaria also has a lot to offer for divers. The waters surrounding the island are home to a wide variety of fish species and there are some spectacular dive sites to explore. Lanzarote - ideal for culture fans

Lanzarote is one of the most fascinating islands of the Canary archipelago. What makes it so special is above all the influence of the world-famous artist Cesar Manrique, who shaped the island in the 60s and 70s. Manrique created numerous works of art and sights on Lanzarote that still shape the image of the island today.

The landscape of Lanzarote is also unique and makes the heart of every nature lover beat faster. The island is of volcanic origin and therefore has a barren, almost unreal landscape. The landscape shines in a thousand colors - especially in red and brown tones. A highlight is the Timanfaya National Park, where you can ride a camel through the impressive volcanic landscape. Lanzarote is also a paradise for beach lovers. The Playas de Papagayo in the south of the island are among the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands. The beaches are surrounded by an impressive, almost unreal landscape and offer an unforgettable bathing experience.

Besides the impressive landscape and the artworks of Cesar Manrique, Lanzarote is also a paradise for wine lovers. Thanks to the mild climate and the volcanic soil, excellent wines are grown on Lanzarote, which are characterized by their special flavor and minerality. All in all, Lanzarote is an ideal travel destination for culture lovers, nature lovers and beach lovers. And last but not least, Lanzarote is also a place of rest and relaxation - far away from the hustle and bustle of mass tourism.

Fuerteventura - the beach island for sun-seekers

Fuerteventura is undoubtedly the Canary Island with the most beaches. With over 150 kilometers of coastline in the southeast of the archipelago, the island is a true paradise for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. Fuerteventura is known for its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Many of these beaches are still relatively lonely and can be enjoyed without large crowds of tourists. An absolute highlight is the Playa de La Concha beach in El Cotillo, which offers a picturesque view of the nearby cliffs.

Surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers get their money's worth here. Other water sports such as jet skiing, diving or stand up paddle boarding are also offered on the island.

El Hierro - island for divers

El Hierro is the smallest of the seven main islands in the Canary Islands, but that doesn't mean it has less to offer than its bigger siblings. On the contrary: On El Hierro you will find untouched, breathtaking landscapes and a unique atmosphere. As previously mentioned, El Hierro is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and therefore offers an abundance of natural beauty. Special highlights are the landscape park La Frontera, the spectacular viewpoint Mirador de la Pena and the mysterious cave Charco Azul. But the mysterious Garoe tree is also worth a visit.

That's why I tried to sort things out a bit and give a rough overview of what you can experience on the Canary Islands. First of all, many holidaymakers who fly to the Canary Islands naturally want to go on a beach holiday. Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria are recommended for a nice and sunny holiday on the Canary Islands. Most of the beaches are on these islands, some of which are still quite quiet and natural.

1. Activities for active people and explorers

The Canary Islands offer active vacationers and explorers countless opportunities to exercise and be active in the fresh air. Due to their volcanic origin, the islands offer spectacular landscapes that are ideal for hiking, jogging or cycling. Especially the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro are ideal for hikers. There are hundreds of kilometers of hiking trails, lonely beaches and a varied landscape to discover here. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are also ideal for hiking.
