I will never forget the first day I spent in Thailand. I had a beach house Beach Rented from Rawai, stepped onto the terrace with pool and enjoyed the breathtaking view of the offshore island of Koh Lon. When we moved in, the owner said: If you want to paddle to the island - the kayak is in the garage. I jumped into the pool, freshened up and then went for a long walk on the beach.

Later that day I rented a scooter and toured the island Phuket explored. I've been to the tropics before - Indonesia and the Maldives - but I've never experienced anything like Thailand. I felt free. The Land of Smiles is a land of opportunity - you can just be yourself. I think that's why so many people love Thailand.

My personal Thailand experiences - land of contrasts

I have now spent several months in Thailand and have been able to explore at least the south of the country in detail. My starting point was always Phuket. The lively island - although it is very touristy - somehow appealed to me. I have spent many days in several places on this large island. And I used it as a starting point to explore some of the most beautiful regions in the country.

There are still some lonely dream beaches on Koh Phangan - although the island is overrun by thousands of tourists once a month. I traveled to the deep south to Koh Lipe, was in Railay Beach, Krabi and Koh Lanta - and was lucky enough to also visit the very small islands like Koh Mook, Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai. Of course I was also on the party island of Koh Phi Phi and in the Phang Nga Bay National Park.

And I was also drawn to the regions a little further north. I spent some time in Khao Lak and went on a trip from there Thailand liveaboard started for the Surin and Similan Islands. In the Gulf of Thailand I visited the island beauties of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Koh Phangan has become one of my favorite places in all of Thailand - I simply love this island.

I felt at home from the first moment

As you can see, I have already been able to visit a few places and regions in Thailand - and I am happy to now share my experiences with you. Unfortunately, of course, I'm still missing many regions - such as central Thailand and northern Thailand, which I would definitely like to see sooner or later. The south of the country has so far particularly appealed to me because these regions with the wonderful dream islands are so beautiful.

But basically it doesn't matter where you are in the Land of Smiles. When you travel to Thailand, you will be enchanted by the country and its people from the first second. The Thais are incredibly friendly, always cheerful and helpful. You will quickly feel at home in Thailand and that is exactly what makes this country so special and lovable. Despite all the beautiful places, islands and beaches, it is the hospitable Thai people that make Thailand the special destination that it is.

My Thailand travel report – how I traveled to the land of smiles

I enjoyed my Thailand vacation through and through individual travel planned. This means that I did everything myself – booked the flights, picked out the hotels and organized all the transfers. That sounds pretty complicated at first, but it was actually quite simple. You first book a flight – and you have immediately accomplished the most important thing.

Then you start looking for accommodation at least for the first few nights - for example HolidayCheck* or booking.com. You have a huge selection of accommodation, offered by both commercial and private landlords.

In Thailand you can get around easily and cheaply with a taxi - but be careful: the taxi mafia rules in many places. That's why you should only book your taxi from trustworthy providers. This can now also be done easily online. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Last but not least, all you have to do is book the airport transfer. You have to be very careful in Thailand - there is a taxi mafia in four places that tries to cheat holidaymakers with excessive prices and crowding out the competition. You can get your taxi relatively safely Phuketastic book or in the popular Grab app. Once you have booked your flight, accommodation for at least the first night and your airport transfer, you have already taken your most important step towards an unforgettable holiday in Thailand.

1. Thailand vacation as a tour

On my first trip to Thailand I only booked the flight, accommodation for the first two nights (an AirBnb on Phuket) and the transfer from the airport to the accommodation. That's why I had a very uneasy feeling beforehand. You have a lot of things to worry about when you don't know before your trip where you'll be sleeping most of the time. But as soon as I arrived, this turned out to be a big advantage.

Get valuable travel tips on site

Since I am a diver, I met the owner of a large, German-speaking diving center on the island on the first day on Phuket, who gave me some tips and recommendations for my trip. As a newbie, I of course wanted to go to the party island of Koh Phi Phi that everyone who travels to the south of Thailand talks about. The local said to me: “No, absolutely not, this is a tourist hotspot. You’d better go to Koh Lipe.” And that’s exactly what I did. I visited perhaps the most beautiful island in Thailand in the very south of the country.

If I had booked the hotels on the tour in advance or as a package, I would have booked some of the most beautiful places in Thailand. Just a week later I went on a boat trip lasting several days to the Similan Islands and Surin Islands - I didn't need a hotel at all.

Thailand round trip

Perhaps the best way to discover Thailand is on a tour where you visit as many places as possible in this beautiful country.

2. Leisure activities during your vacation

There is so much you can do during your vacation in Thailand. First of all, you'll want to explore everything, so you'll rent a scooter to visit your vacation spot and the surrounding area. With a scooter you are flexible and can see everything you want to see - like temples and nature parks. But you also have the opportunity to try out a new restaurant or go to the food market every now and then.

One of my favorite activities and things to do in Thailand is visiting different temples - they are often so beautifully artistically designed and simply impressive. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Diving and snorkeling in Thailand is highly recommended

My favorite leisure activities on vacation in Thailand were of course Diving and snorkeling, but also stand up paddling and surfing, which is possible on many beaches. When diving, you can simply take in the beauty of the underwater world - and if you don't have a dive center nearby, you can simply jump into the water and go snorkeling. I also looked at many temples. I think the temples are exactly what sets Thailand apart from our latitudes. These imposing buildings are simply incredibly beautiful to look at and bear witness to a culture that is very different from ours.

Activities

There is so much you can do in Thailand. What is really recommended. And what can you do without?

3. Visit to the island world of Thailand

That's why I'm always drawn to Thailand because the islands are so incredibly beautiful. If I had to recommend just one island to you – I wouldn’t know which one. I think at least two of the islands I've been to are absolutely unique and a must-see: Koh Lipe and Koh Phangan. These are definitely my favorite islands in Thailand.

The basic rule is: the more remote and difficult to reach the islands are, the more beautiful they are. You should therefore take the long journey and go deep into the south of Thailand. There, these beautiful islands are strung together like a string of pearls.

The speedboat takes you to the island world

The best way to go island hopping is by speedboat. This means you can move quickly and safely - something that can't always be said about large, slow ferries. When exploring the islands of Thailand, you should focus on a few islands and spend a few days on each island. If you don't like it, leave early. If you love the island and your hotel, stay a little longer. In any case, I would rather choose three to five Thai islands instead of ten, otherwise you won't really get to know any of them - and that would be a real shame.

Islands in Thailand

You've never seen anything so beautiful - there are islands in Thailand that make every holidaymaker's heart beat faster. I have visited some of them.

4. Incredibly beautiful beaches in Thailand

And hand in hand with the beauty of the islands in Thailand go the beaches. It is not without reason that the film “The Beach” was filmed here. In the Land of Smiles you have bays that are so beautiful that you will definitely never want to go on a beach holiday anywhere else again. During my travels, I always took swimming gear with me on every excursion so that I could quickly jump into the water if the worst came to the worst.

Unfortunately, beaches also have their downsides

The light and shadow of tourism are probably reflected more in Thailand than on the beaches. The more beautiful and easy to reach a beach is, the more tourists make the pilgrimage there - in other words: it is absolutely full. On some beaches you won't be able to set foot on the ground in high season. But you can also discover deserted beaches. The more remote a beach is, the fewer people go there and you may even have it all to yourself. But that doesn't mean great luck either: lonely and remote beaches are not cleaned and are full of flotsam and rubbish.

Beaches in Thailand

Travel report Thailand – my tips and recommendations for travel planning

Thailand is a country that you can easily travel to. You don't have to be overly travel-savvy to plan a customized trip and have an unforgettable vacation. However, there are a few things to consider in the land of smiles. Traffic in particular can be quite stressful. And you always have to be careful not to get ripped off. You should also adhere to local rules and customs.

So much to do and so much to see, Thailand is a destination you can visit again and again. However, I recommend a certain degree of caution. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
