My Maldives vacation experiences - the ultimate luxury trip to the realm of the islands

If you haven't been to the Maldives yet, it's about time. The archipelago in the Indian Ocean is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful holiday destinations this planet has to offer. The Kingdom of the Islands consists of over 1200 tiny islets grouped into atolls and extending for hundreds of kilometers in the middle of the sea. Many of the islands are uninhabited, but there are exclusive and luxurious ones on just over 100 islands Hotels and resorts.

In the Maldives you can expect accommodation with a lot of privacy and every imaginable luxury, culinary delights - most of the islands really don't miss anything when it comes to haute cuisine - and above all the picturesque idyll of the atolls and islands, the crystal-clear, lukewarm water and the heart-warming sunshine . But as is so often the case, there is also a downside: see Paris – and die.

My Maldives vacation experience is: Once you've vacationed in the kingdom of the islands, you're screwed for the rest of your life and you only long for that very special feeling that only exists deep in the Indian Ocean. But as I said: with a little skill, the trip to the Maldives can be quite affordable - so nothing is stopping you from flying to the kingdom of the islands.

As a rule, there is only one hotel on each Maldives island, which consists of small private villas and bungalows. That doesn't just sound good, it is. I've been to the Maldives twice so far - to the islands Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu and Coco Bodu Hithi.

Book cheap Maldives holidays tips – the most important things first

The Maldives are one of the most beautiful and paradisiacal travel destinations in the world. The archipelago offers sun, sand, palm trees and crystal clear turquoise waters on the tiny resort islands, as well as the finest in luxury, relaxation, tranquility and privacy. As a rule, a trip to the Maldives is therefore quite expensive. But how can you book a cheap Maldives holiday? What tips and tricks are there to get to the island state for little money? I'll give you a little help with my Maldives experiences to get what might be the most beautiful vacation of your life

The Maldives are one of the most beautiful and paradisiacal travel destinations in the world. The archipelago offers sun, sand, palm trees and crystal clear turquoise waters on the tiny resort islands, as well as the finest in luxury, relaxation, tranquility and privacy.

The best way to find cheap flights to the Maldives is with a little flexibility. It is advisable to be flexible about travel dates by plus or minus three days. So you can often find much cheaper flights. It also helps to book early. Flight prices usually increase sharply about four to six weeks before departure. So if you have a set travel date, it's best to book as early as possible.

Another way to save money on your Maldives vacation is to choose a less popular vacation island. The most popular islands such as Maafushi, Fulidhoo or Dhigurah are often fully booked and therefore quite expensive. In contrast, lesser-known islands like Thoddoo or Biyadhoo are much cheaper and offer just as good conditions for a perfect Maldives holiday.

If you want to save even more money, you can also book a room in a guest house on a local island. These are usually much cheaper than the rooms in the resort hotels and you get to know the Maldives and the Maldivian way of life much better. Of course, this isn't for everyone and if you want luxury and privacy, a room in a resort hotel is definitely a better choice.

I hope these tips will help you plan and book your perfect Maldives vacation on a budget. If you have any further questions or need more tips, feel free to contact me.

When is the best time to travel to the Maldives?

The best time to travel to the Maldives is between November and April. This is the so-called dry season on the islands, when it hardly ever rains and the water temperature is very comfortable for swimming and snorkeling. It can rain more frequently in the Maldives from May to October, but that doesn't mean it rains all day. In general, you can still expect sunny weather during this period. The water temperature is also slightly cooler from May to October, but that shouldn't be a problem for most people. Of course, flight and accommodation prices are also lower during this period. So if you are looking for a cheap Maldives holiday, you should definitely travel in the rainy season.

How much is 2 weeks Maldives?

The cost of a 2 week Maldives vacation can vary wildly depending on travel style and budget. If you want to stay in a luxury resort hotel, you have to calculate at least 2 euros per person for a 2.000-week holiday. This includes flight, hotel room and all meals and activities at the resort. If you're looking for a cheaper option, you can book a room at a guesthouse on a local island. This will cost you around 1300 euros per person for a two-week holiday including flights, room and meals.

When is it cheapest in the Maldives?

The best time to travel to the Maldives is the rainy season from May to October. Flights and accommodation are usually much cheaper during this time. Of course, you can also count on sunny weather and warm water temperatures during this time. So if you are looking for a cheap Maldives holiday, this is the right time to visit.

Why is Maldives so expensive?

Maldives is expensive because it is a very popular tourist destination and accommodation options are quite limited. There are no hostels or cheap hotels in the Maldives. So unless you book a room in a guest house on a local island, you will have to pay quite a bit of money for your accommodation. The same applies to food and drink, which are also quite expensive in the Maldives. Of course, you can save some money by eating at local restaurants instead of the resort hotels, but overall, a trip to the Maldives is not a cheap vacation.

Are the Maldives worth a trip?

Yes, the Maldives are definitely worth a trip. The island kingdom offers sun, sand, palm trees and crystal clear waters on the tiny resort islands, as well as luxury, relaxation, tranquility and privacy. If you are looking for a paradise holiday destination, the Maldives is the place for you. But keep in mind that a trip to the Maldives is not a cheap vacation. So if you're on a tight budget, it might be better to choose another destination.

How many days do you need in Maldives?

You need at least seven to ten days in the Maldives to get an impression of the island kingdom. This gives you enough time to relax on the beach, swim or snorkel in the crystal clear waters, explore one or two of the local islands and visit the capital Malé. Of course you can stay longer in the Maldives if you want.

Which is better Maldives or Seychelles?

This question is difficult to answer, because both the Maldives and the Seychelles are beautiful, paradise travel destinations. If you are looking for luxury, relaxation and privacy, the Maldives is probably a better choice. If you are looking for an adventurous holiday with more activities, the Seychelles might be a better choice. In the end, of course, it all comes down to your personal preferences.

How many islands are there in the Maldives?

There are about 1.200 islands in the Maldives. However, only about 200 of these islands are inhabited. The remaining islands are either deserted or used as tourist resorts.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The best time to visit the Maldives is the dry season from November to April. During this time you can expect sunny weather and little rain. Of course, this is also the high season, so flights and accommodation are more expensive during this time. If you are looking for a cheaper option, you can travel during the rainy season from May to October. However, keep in mind that during this time you may experience significantly more rain and thunderstorms.

Maldives Vacation Cost Experience – How much does a trip to paradise cost?

You've probably already thought of it. A Maldives vacation is expensive fun and can really put a strain on your travel finances. The archipelago in Indian Ocean is remote, exclusive and requires incredible logistics to be supplied with goods and food. Everything is imported from Dubai, India and Sri Lanka. In addition, with around 100 accommodations per island, there is only ever a small group of 150 to 300 guests on site.

This interaction of factors results in an interesting price structure, which is what my Maldives holiday cost experience is like. While flights are still available in the low season for relatively cheap prices starting at 650 euros via the hubs in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey or Europe, the luxurious resorts and hotels in the Maldives cost a lot of money. A trip to the Maldives costs one Resort island per night between 250 and 1500 euros.

The prices are open upwards and depend on the selected room category (villa category) and from simple meals to All Inclusive you can even pay significantly more. In addition, there is the transfer from the airport on Hulumalé, the neighboring island of the capital Malé, to the respective resort island.

With the seaplane to paradise: Many islands can only be reached by seaplane - others by speedboat. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The transfer takes place either by seaplane or by speedboat and costs around 250 euros. Further costs will then be added to the hotel. You can take trips to the local islands, go diving and enjoy the beautiful underwater world on the coral reefs, freedive, dolphin tours and snorkeling with manta rays, try SUP in the Maldives, have a romantic dinner on the beach or just have a few drinks at the bar . Even a beer in the Maldives costs around twelve euros on some islands.

How much does a Maldives vacation cost?

So how much does a Maldives holiday cost? You can calculate that. A ten-day stay on a Maldives island can cost upwards of 3500 euros. Depending on the luxury you would like to treat yourself to, it can easily amount to 10.000 euros or more. For example, there are private islands that you can rent for yourself. But then the costs go up to hundreds of thousands of euros per week. Such prices are usually only paid by the rich, who don't care about money at all.

And what does a Maldives vacation really cost? You don't need to stick your head in the sand now. Yes, a trip to the kingdom of the islands can really be very expensive and the regular prices are in the range described Price range. But you can also book your Maldives vacation cheaply. Sometimes it is even possible for significantly less than 2000 euros a week in the Maldives to spend. Yes, quite right, that is of course clear cheaper than the example above. How you can get such offers with a little luck, I explain to you in my Maldives tips and experiences.

My tips and my own experiences – How can you book a Maldives holiday cheaply?

Actually, the Maldives are only reserved for the rich and famous of this world - you think! One might actually assume so. But of course that's not true. With a few tips and tricks you can book your Maldives vacation cheaply and get your dream trip for significantly less money. I have put together 7 tips and tricks for you that – with a bit of luck – will make your Maldives vacation cheaper.

1. Maldives travel time: just fly in low season

One of the easiest and best ways to book a Maldives vacation is to just fly in low season. This tip is probably the most important and best. who the best time avoids, often saves significantly. Because the off-season in the Maldives is long. From April to November there is monsoons on the archipelago with a lot of rain and mixed weather on many days. The prices are correspondingly lower during this period. You will find many exciting travel offers for the period from mid-April to mid-October, with which you can book and spend your Maldives vacation cheaply.

Lagoon: Maldives diving vacation should include a few days on the beach! Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
In the off-season it is also more cloudy and can rain frequently. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

However, the whole thing of course also has a disadvantage: You will then have the aforementioned mixed weather there and, in the worst case, it can even happen that it rains all week long. As a rule, it is said that tropical rains are only short and strong and that the sun comes out again afterwards. But I have also experienced that it rains for a whole week in the Maldives. However, you have to accept this in order to book a cheap trip to the Maldives.

2. Note the location of the Maldives resort island when booking

In the Maldives you can choose from over 100 different resort islands. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer Travel report Maldives tips
In the Maldives you can choose from over 100 different resort islands. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

When choosing your resort island, you should definitely pay attention to the location. The further the transfer from the airport in Hulumalé to your hotel island, the more expensive it will be. And accordingly, you will have a cheaper Maldives vacation if you spend it closer to the airport.

That doesn't mean that you have to reside within sight of the airport. But a radius of up to 100 kilometers around the capital Malé would certainly not be wrong. For example, if you can save the trip by seaplane and take the speed boat instead, the trip will be much cheaper.

3. Living in a Maldives guesthouse on a native island

There is a strict social structure in the Maldives. The tourists are usually brought directly from the airport to their hotel islands. The locals live separately in small villages on the indigenous islands. For some years now, however, the trend has been established that Maldives guest houses on local islands arise and holidaymakers can also stay here. A vacation on a Maldives local island is significantly cheaper than in a luxury resort.

What strikes you straight away on the Maldives local island: everything is so beautifully colorful. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer Diving local island Maldives Guesthouse Guesthouse
What strikes you right away on the Maldives local island: everything is so beautifully colorful. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

To do this, however, you have to comply with a whole series of rules. Alcohol is frowned upon on the islands of the locals, one should dress appropriately and covered and go swimming in a bikini is not welcome at all - one could also call it forbidden. If you want to vacation on a local island, you should be aware of the strict rules in any case.

4. Look for alternative prices for the Maldivian seaplane

Maldives: With the seaplane we go to the resort island. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer Travel report Maldives tips
Maldives: With the seaplane we go to the resort island. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

If you are traveling to the Maldives and book a package holiday, you should make sure that the hotel transfer is already included. Because otherwise there is a risk of a rude awakening: How are you supposed to get from the airport to the resort island? Booking the seaplane flight after arrival is not a good idea at all. You should therefore think about it from home and book the seaplane flight in Europe in advance. In many cases this should be cheaper and save you a few euros.

5. In the Maldives necessarily all-inclusive choose

You have to imagine this: when you arrive in the Maldives, you can't just go to the supermarket somewhere. There is simply none - or only far away on a local island. There are a few shops on the local island that resemble a typical kiosk. But no one would go there for a bottle of Coke. Because you don't get there that easily.

The golden rule of every Maldives holiday: You should book at least half board - absolute minimum!

Sascha Tegtmeyer

That's why the golden rule of every Maldives vacation is: you should book at least half board. Because you will have to rely on hotel food and will most likely pay very dearly for any meal that is not included. Lunch on a resort island can easily cost over 100 euros, and a small portion of spaghetti without a drink can cost 25 dollars. Extrapolated over ten days, that's easily another 1000 euros extra. As I said, there are neither alternatives nor supermarkets where you can stock up on food. I would therefore strongly recommend booking your Maldives holiday with all inclusive. The bottom line is that it should be much, much cheaper than half board or just breakfast (B&B).

6. Make sure you have all the important holiday utensils in mind - don't forget sunscreen

What you forget at home, you will probably not be able to buy in the Maldives, or only extremely expensive. If necessary, stock up on the necessary provisions at the airport like here in Dubai. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
What you forget at home, you will probably not be able to buy in the Maldives, or only extremely expensive. If necessary, stock up on the necessary provisions at the airport like here in Dubai. But remember that alcohol is banned or strictly regulated in many places in the Maldives. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Similarly, this rule is also crucial to spend a cheap Maldives vacation. You should definitely compile a packing list before the trip and make sure that you don't forget anything important. Because the supply of everyday products is absolutely bad on the resort islands. Except for a few small shops in the hotel, you won't be able to buy anything.

Yes, that's right, I had the painful experience myself: leaving sunscreen and sunglasses at home. The sunscreen cost $25 in the sample pack and the sunglasses cost a whopping $100. Such expenses can of course drive up the price of a Maldives vacation significantly.

  • In no case should you forget sufficient sunscreen (SPF 50+) in sufficient quantities.
  • Remember your sunglasses - you'll need them because it's extremely bright in the Maldives.
  • Don't forget your passport.
  • Take enough cash with you just in case.

7. Select Very Last Minute deals for Maldives

With very last minute offers you get to your dream vacation in the Maldives at the very last minute. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

A great alternative to booking a Maldives holiday at a particularly low price is simply to take advantage of a very last minute Maldives offer. These are travel offers and travel bargains that you only book two to three days or at least less than a week before departure.

You book and then fly immediately. These offers are mostly contingents that are still left over or have been canceled by holidaymakers and are now to be sold quickly and cheaply. With Very Last Minute Maldives offers you can really save a lot and in the best case travel up to 70 percent cheaper. But you have to keep your eyes open and strike at the right moment.

5. Kuredu (Kuredu Island Resort & Spa)

Kuredu Island in the southern Ari Atoll is one of the most famous and largest islands in the Maldives. With a length of around 1.500 meters, it offers a varied backdrop of lush vegetation, white beaches and turquoise water. Kuredu Island Resort & Spa is a 4,5 star resort with Beach Bungalows, Beach Villas and Water Villas. Each accommodation has its own charm, but all are very stylishly furnished and offer a wonderful view of the Indian Ocean. The Water Villas in particular are a highlight, as they float directly above the turquoise blue water and offer complete privacy.

A distinctive feature of Kuredu is the island's own time zone, which is one hour ahead of Maldivian time. That means more hours of sunshine during the day and more time to explore the underwater world with activities like scuba diving or snorkeling.

To put it in colloquial terms: In the Maldives you will find hotels and resorts that are so breathtaking that your ears will bang. Some of the most luxurious hotels in the world are located in the kingdom of the islands. From overwater villas to private island resorts, the Maldives offers something for every lifestyle - and even for every price range. You can pay 200 euros per night or 20.000 euros. Everything is possible. Many travelers spend their honeymoon in the Maldives and really treat themselves. If you are looking for a romantic vacation, the Maldives is the perfect destination.

There are of course many other great Maldives resort islands. Wasn't your favorite island in the Maldives included? Then just add them in the comments below and tell me what you particularly like about it.

All information about the islands corresponds to the information on the official websites of the islands or from HolidayCheck and is without guarantee. Star ratings are as of July 2021 - they can of course change.

Maldives holiday experience – booking cheaply is actually quite easy

The Maldives are by nature not a destination where you can spend a cheap holiday. Anyone who thinks that they can visit the islands in the Indian Ocean for a few hundred euros is of course wrong. Nevertheless, you can save a lot when booking a vacation to the Maldives and get the trip at a much more pleasant price. For example, if you end up paying “only” 2200 instead of 3500 euros, you have already made a very good deal.

Nevertheless, you should definitely make sure that important travel options such as transfer to the resort island and all-inclusive are included in all package travel bargain offers and savings opportunities. If you can skip lunch, half board is sufficient if in doubt. However, booking all inclusive is absolutely recommended in the Maldives.

If you need a little less luxury and want to plan your trip to the Maldives a little more individually and cheaply, you can also go on holiday in a guest house on a local island and get to know life in the Maldives authentically. This is a great and exciting way to experience the Maldives as an adventure vacation or individual trip. But in this case you should definitely adhere to the rules on the respective islands and treat the locals with respect.

In any case, the Maldives is a travel destination that you should definitely visit as soon as possible. The islands in the Indian Ocean are the epitome of a dream vacation and should definitely be high on your travel bucket list.
