Baltic Sea vacation in autumn – time for a little more comfort

The wind is blowing properly from the east and in Scharbeutz high waves are hitting the beach, the likes of which have not been seen for months. The beach has reduced to half its normal size in the high tide and algae is piling up. You notice the change and the change of season in the sea like a living organism. But the change is gradual. Because on the one hand you can feel autumn, on the other hand summer is still brewing a little: it is sunny and the temperatures are still over 20 degrees Celsius during the day.

Walkers on the beach have already put on their transitional jacket, while hard-boiled people are still plunging into the water: swimmers are enjoying Germany's largest open-air wave pool. And Surfer For a change sometimes without Stand Up Paddle into the waves of the Baltic Sea, while kiters and windsurfers jump over the surf.

“It’s like Hawaii right now in Scharbeutz!” writes a user on Instagram about a photo that shows surfers near the pier Scharbeutz fall into the waves. The fresh sea air smells salty and the sun's rays warm the face. And above all, it is comparatively empty on the beach and in the pedestrian zones - this is the chance to really let go and relax.

Bay of Lübeck – Would you rather go to the Baltic Sea in summer?

Sure that More There is a dream on our doorstep in summer! The Bay of Lübeck is one of the sunniest areas in Germany and offers surprisingly stable weather in summer by Central European standards. But the conditions vary greatly: While the summer of 2016 was solid and had some beautiful days here on the coast, May to September 2017 was consistently rainy - and autumnal.

In 2018, we probably experienced the summer of the century - with sunshine from April to September. But it becomes clear here: You can't rely on anything! You can experience a rainy, autumnal summer on the Baltic Sea or a summery autumn. Luck just has to play a part.

So you should the Summer vacation in Scharbeutz one Autumn holiday prefer to the Baltic Sea? After all, the water is greenish, crystal clear and invites you to swim. You can walk around barefoot all day and sip cocktails in the evening in a beach bar. But as always there is a flip side of the coin: It is full of rattles! And so much so that it (in our opinion) is no longer beautiful and no fun anymore.

It congests on the 1 highway to the Baltic Sea, people argue about the parking lots, on the beach you get no leg on the ground and at shops for cold drinks and ice cream shops form long queues. In the big summer holidays and especially on sunny weekends in midsummer you get in Haffkrug, Scharbeutz or on Timmendorfer beach and Niendorf / Baltic Sea no leg to the ground. The people are densely crowded, as you would otherwise only from the Mediterranean beach Majorca or Sardinia knows. Our Pro-Tip is therefore quite: Who can set it up somehow, should do himself the favor and spend the Baltic Sea holiday in the autumn.

On some summer days, it is so full in the Bay of Lübeck that you do not get a leg to the ground. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

On the other hand, it is quite right to be so full, because in summer there is a Mediterranean feeling on the Baltic Sea coast - especially when there are a few Dolphins stop by, as happened last summer in July and has been happening more and more recently. This year a dolphin was spotted off Travemünde again.

During peak times, people line up 50 meters long at the ice cream parlor and a cozy dinner in the restaurant is hardly possible because you have to order a week in advance and still 20 people are waiting to snatch your table. “Reserve the table on the same day? “They have no chance,” we heard more than once this summer. This ends in mid-September: the main season is over. And with the bed change on Saturday of the 2nd weekend in September, everything suddenly empties.

All the advantages of a Baltic holiday in autumn

  • It is finally calmer and more relaxed on the Baltic Sea
  • The heat and humidity of the summer is over
  • Many accommodations are cheaper in low season
  • The autumn with its color splendor finds its way
  • In September, October and November, there are often warm and sunny days!
  • Most sights are not overcrowded anymore
  • You do not have to make reservations in many restaurants anymore
  • It's easier to get a parking space
  • Beaches are finally free again (from 15, September to 01, May)
  • Dogs and horses are allowed from the 01. October to 31. March to the beach

Baltic Sea vacation in autumn – activities for connoisseurs

Pack your weatherproof parker, but don't forget your swimming trunks either: a Baltic holiday in autumn is still good for everything. In September there is often a longer period of good weather, which also allows temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius - and the sea also still has the highest temperatures of the entire summer at just under 18 degrees - and for whom it is too cold in the sea because the Baltic Sea is now even not that Maldives are: Current wetsuits isolate optimally and keep warm in any season!

On the coast you have to be prepared for any weather at any time of the year. That’s in a Baltic Sea vacation Autumn not otherwise. Perhaps one should therefore make the quality of the trip simply less dependent on the weather than on the Baltic Sea leisure activities, which are still possible from late summer to late autumn. And they are definitely some. Many shops are open year-round or winter breaks only in January. In September, October and November, you also have the opportunity to get a closer look at the sights on the Baltic Sea.

The Lübeck Bay is ideal for jogging for those who want to do a good physical exercise in a Baltic Sea holiday in the fall and want to keep fit. On many kilometers shoreline Endurance athletes can really let off steam. Along the coast from Niendorf / Baltic Sea to Sierksdorf Jogger several kilometers wide open track on the well-developed, almost continuous promenades. The distance from the end of the promenade in Sierksdorf to the pier in Niendorf is just under ten kilometers. Baltic Sea joggers have the chance to walk a half-marathon distance directly on the water.

Well-developed footpaths along the promenade invite you to really let off steam. Along the way there are always great views of the bay. Of course, this is also recommended Jogging on the beach. Of course, joggers have the opportunity to explore the tranquil places along the Bay of Lübeck in their own way. For advanced Athlete Of course, there is also the possibility of running from Neustadt to Travemünde - the route should correspond in each direction about a half marathon. What applies to joggers, of course, applies to walkers and Nordic walkers at least as well. In your Baltic Sea holiday in the fall, you can of course go on beach and beach from gorgeous. The kilometer-long coast invites you to complete day trips. And fans of Nordic Walking will also get their money's worth. Who after a few days walk by the sea enough of Beach has, can also use the forest trails around Scharbeutz and Timmendorf. For example, we often walk the forest path from Scharbeutz to Pönitzer See. And there you can round the Great Lake Pönitz wonderful. If you like to go for a walk in the autumn on the Baltic Sea, there are endless routes to discover. Since you can really relax and win the distance to everyday life.

3. Bay of Lübeck: cycling in the fall vacation

Along the coastline, as for joggers, there is also the opportunity for cyclists to explore the entire Bay of Lübeck by bike. Along the promenades between Sierksdorf and Niendorf there is also almost always a bike path, so that you can cruise along the bay with tailwind. In the meantime, you can do that just as well with yours E-scooter (test)

For advanced and mountain bikers, there is of course also the possibility to start the bike into the hinterland. If you like to ride a bike and like to ride a bit uphill and downhill, you can for example take the forest path between Scharbeutz and Pönitz. There is the training effect immediately included. And once you have cycled through the autumn forest over the mountain, you can enjoy in Pönitz am See the Indian Summer on the Baltic Sea.

4. Riding on the beach: from October with the horse directly to the sea

Who does not want to enjoy the feeling of freedom and riding on the beach? Along the Bay of Lübeck around Timmendorfer Strand there are various riding stableswhere vacationers either their own Horse or sign up for a ride. Mostly it is only a few hundred meters from the riding stables to the beach and the ride in the group is a great pleasure. To ride with the horse directly to the sea and the Sun and to feel the wind means a tremendous sense of freedom. Usually riders with their horses are allowed from 01. October again prepare the beach.

From 01. October the beach can be visited again with the horse. Originally it was planned, starting from 2018 the riding season on the beach on a launch date from 01. November to move. However, this should have been reversed. Inform yourself before booking and arrival once again at the Lübeck Bay Tourist Office on the current state. If you are horse fans, then riding on the beach is the most important tip for you.

During the whole summer long the Stand Up Paddlers have populated the Bay of Lübeck, is now the time for the kite surfers, windsurfers and surfers come - yes, all right, even for the surfers and SUP surfers! Pelzerhaken is thanks to its location for Surfer usually the first choice, but especially in the fall, the other places are worth a look at the surfing conditions: At the surf schools Haffkrug and Timmendorfer beach or the SUP board rental can be advised, quickly just borrow a board and make his first steps as a rider or windsurfer.

Admittedly, this is our favorite activity in autumn and winter on the Baltic Sea. Off to the sauna and warm up properly in the Ostseetherme. If the sea water has now become too cold for you, there is of course an excellent alternative: the Baltic Sea thermal baths! This tropical water world right on the Baltic Sea beach is just right for the cooler season. On 14.000 square meters, the thermal spa offers various water pools for swimmers and non-swimmers, an area for children, water slides where championships even take place and a huge wellness area with various saunas, whirlpools and swimming pools. There is even a fitness center for sports lovers. So who in the middle Autumn warmth and relaxation is in the Baltic Sea spa in Scharbeutz just right.

8. Shopping and sightseeing in Lübeck: For the rainy days

From Lübeck Bay in the eponymous city of Lübeck, it is only a stone's throw: At the latest after a quarter of an hour you are by car from Scharbeutz or Timmendorfer beach in this really commendable city. Of course, especially in the fall, it makes sense to leave the beach behind and take a trip to Lübeck. Those who are interested in culture will find what they are looking for in the Hanseatic city: Diverse churches such as the Marienkirche or the Petrikirche can be admired. Of course, many city gates, museums and houses as well as passages and courtyards recall the lively tradition as a trading city. One of the main attractions of the place are of course the Holstentor and the Buddenbrook House.

If you are less interested in culture, you can go shopping in Lübeck wonderful: You can find all the usual shops and brands in the old town and in the surrounding streets. We were very impressed by the Hüxstraße, which exudes a bit of the flair of a big city scene district with its small, lovingly run shops and restaurants.

9. Excursion destination Travemünde: Ships on the Baltic Sea beach

The small town of Travemünde is also a great destination for your Baltic Sea holiday in autumn. Many ferries and merchant ships from Scandinavia arrive there. There is also a spacious beach and a nice little promenade with the sailing ship “Passat”. A visit to Travemünde is definitely a successful change in the autumn vacation. If you want to walk along the promenade with fish sandwiches in hand and want to “watch pots”, you've come to the right place. The large ships are also becoming more numerous: In August 2018, the large cruise ship "Queen Elizabeth II" of the Cunard shipping company was even visiting Travemünde and moored here at the Skandinavienkai.

FAQs Baltic Sea vacation in autumn – the most important questions and answers

Where is the most beautiful place on the Baltic Sea?

The correct question should be: Where on the Baltic Sea is the most beautiful “for you”? Because the German Baltic Sea coast has so many beautiful areas where you can vacation all year round. If you want chic and hustle and bustle, drive to the Lübeck Bay to Scharbeutz or Timmendorfer Strand. If you are looking for natural beaches, go to Fehmarn or Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There are beautiful beaches and architecture on Rügen, for example. You can also go on cheap holidays in the east - for example in Fischland Darß-Zingst. The popular hot spots like the Bay of Lübeck are becoming more and more expensive - there you can have a good wellness holiday and luxury holiday. Overall, however, the Baltic coast has something to offer for every taste and budget.

What does a holiday apartment on the Baltic Sea cost?

From my own experience, I know that you can get a holiday apartment on the Baltic Sea for around 30 euros per night. After that, however, you have to search a little and often book directly with a private landlord. The prices vary widely. If you book through portals, you usually have to expect at least 70 to 100 euros per night for a reasonable apartment - and above all book in good time, because holiday apartments and holiday homes on the Baltic Sea are often booked out months in advance. Of course, prices vary depending on where you book and what season you want to travel.

Which beach is the most beautiful on the Baltic Sea?

Also the question "Which beach is the most beautiful on the Baltic Sea?" cannot be answered in such a general way. Sure you can make a ranking of the most beautiful beaches on the Baltic Sea, but that would not do justice to many other beaches. You should rather narrow it down to your preferred holiday region: "Which is the most beautiful beach on Fehmarn?" - "Which is the most beautiful beach in the Bay of Lübeck?" In this way one comes much closer to the individually fitting answer. I personally find the beach in Sierksdorf very beautiful - for me it is the most beautiful beach in the Baltic Sea.

Why vacation on the Baltic Sea?

Why should you take a vacation on the Baltic Sea? Very simple: The sea can be reached quickly by car from all over Central Europe. And on site you can expect clear water, idyllic beaches, a Baltic atmosphere and great accommodations. If you are a bit away from the typical tourist hot spots, with a bit of luck you will even get some untouched nature. Overall, a holiday in the Baltic Sea is also quite cheap - especially in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. You can leave as much money in the popular holiday regions as you would on a two-week luxury holiday on the Mediterranean.

Where is it cheapest on the Baltic Sea?

The Baltic coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is rather cheap. Between Boltenhagen, Insel Poel, Fischland Darß-Zingst, Rügen and Usedom you can spend relatively cheap holidays on the Baltic Sea. If you want something cheaper, you can go on vacation in Mecklenburg Switzerland and then simply plan a few day trips to the sea.

Which is better - North Sea or Baltic Sea?

Basically, it is a matter of taste whether you like the North Sea or the Baltic Sea better. Personally, I prefer the Baltic Sea because the inland sea is a bit more protected, the water is not quite as salty when swimming and bathing and the tides with ebb and flow are not as pronounced. In addition, the landscape of the Baltic Sea coast tends to be a little more varied and the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in particular is a little cheaper. But you don't have the endlessly wide beaches of the North Sea on the Baltic Sea. Whether the North Sea or the Baltic Sea is better is also a matter of taste. Both seas have something for themselves.

Which beach on the Baltic Sea?

Also the question "Which beach on the Baltic Sea?" cannot be answered in such a general way.

Where is it warmest on the Baltic Sea?

Warm is more of a relative term on the Baltic Sea, as it is usually a little fresher by the sea. In summer, temperatures only rise above 20 degrees on a few days. It is always a little cooler on the Baltic Sea than inland. It can only get really hot right on the coast in extreme summer. I would therefore not describe any place on the Baltic Sea coast as really warm. However, if you want to have some sun in the cooler temperatures, you are right on Fehmarn or Rügen - both places are among the sunniest regions in Germany.

Where is the most beautiful place on the Baltic Sea with children?

I would definitely spend a Baltic Sea holiday in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with the kids. Anyone who spends their Baltic Sea holiday with children in the Bay of Lübeck in Scharbeutz or Timmendorfer Strand can pay a small fortune for three to five people. You can also book a two-week package tour to the Mediterranean and at least be relatively sure that you will get plenty of sun and warmth. Fischland Darß-Zingst, for example, is ideal for a holiday in the Baltic Sea with children, where you have kilometers of wonderful beaches and find relatively cheap accommodation.

Which is the most beautiful island in the Baltic Sea?

All Baltic Sea islands have something for themselves and each has its own advantages. In my opinion, the most beautiful Baltic Sea islands are Fehmarn and Rügen. The overall package is just right on both islands. You have beautiful beaches, great accommodations and lots to do. Both islands are ideal so that there is no boredom on vacation.

What should one have seen on the Baltic Sea?

There is so much to do along the Baltic Sea coast. You can bathe and swim, ride a bike, hike in the hinterland, take a boat out, stand up paddling, have delicious food in many places, go to the thermal baths in bad weather, visit a farm and discover many sights. You should definitely have seen the chalk cliffs on Rügen. You can also stroll in Timmendorfer Strand or Scharbeutz, take the ferry from Travemünde to Scandinavia, discover natural beaches on Fehmarn or explore lively cities such as Lübeck, Kiel, Rostock or Stralsund.

What is beautiful Scharbeutz or Timmendorfer Strand?

Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz are located in the Bay of Lübeck and, as neighboring towns, are right next to each other. Basically, both places don't take much. Unfortunately, the places have become very hyped in recent years and become a destination for strong mass tourism. Timmendorfer Strand tends to be more suitable for older people, while Scharbeutz appeals to the younger ones. In principle, however, you cannot say which of the two is more beautiful. Both places have something for themselves. Basically, you should like the hustle and bustle and chic.

Why is the Baltic Sea so popular?

Why is the Baltic Sea so popular? Very simple: The sea can be reached quickly by car from Germany and all of Central Europe.

Where is it most beautiful in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania?

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of the most beautiful holiday regions in Germany. There are numerous great areas to discover throughout the state. In my opinion it is most beautiful, of course, by the sea - that is, on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. I personally like Rügen very much, in my opinion it is the most beautiful place there in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Which is cheaper - North Sea or Baltic Sea?

It's a shame, of course, because the prices vary according to location and season as well as the respective provider. A holiday in Germany on the coast tends to be the cheapest in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania. And accordingly one can say that the Baltic Sea is cheaper than the North Sea.

Is it warm on the Baltic Sea?

According to my personal coldness, it is not - or rarely - warm at the Baltic Sea.

Is Scharbeutz beautiful?

My personal opinion about it: Scharbeutz is a very nice place. I lived there for a couple of years. In recent years, however, the resort in the Bay of Lübeck has unfortunately become more of a destination for mass tourism and is degenerating more and more into an overpriced fancy holiday resort, whose construction boom is driving real estate prices and rents to unaffordable heights. On the one hand, Scharbeutz has become more modern and visually appealing, but on the other hand it has lost a lot of authenticity, is becoming more and more expensive and is now overcrowded in summer, but also all year round, because it has received such a strong media presence and is hyped. From then on, Scharbeutz is still very beautiful.
