What does it mean to find yourself?

The term “finding yourself” is often viewed in a clichéd and esoteric way. We've all seen images of someone sitting cross-legged on the floor, meditating on self-discovery. I think that's completely okay too. Meditation is a good thing - and it also helps you get closer to yourself through mindfulness and get to know yourself better.

The term “finding yourself” is often used quite superficially. But if you want to use your vacation to find yourself again, you should know what it actually means. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
The term "finding oneself" is often used very superficially. But if you want to use your vacation to find yourself again, you should know what it actually means.

But I am more of the opinion that true self-discovery arises in action. An action that shows who you are is worth more than 1000 words and more than 100 hours of meditation. If you want to find yourself, observe your actions - and change your actions. Because what else should the so-called true self be if it is not the sum of actions - the paths we take and the interpersonal contact we maintain? The best way to discover the person behind all the masks, the self we want to find, is to observe ourselves in our actions.

Anyone who wants to find their self has not necessarily lost it

Wanting to find your true self means, conversely, wanting to go on a journey of discovery. And this can not only be a spiritual journey of discovery, but also a physical one - namely a journey on which you get to know yourself better and, above all, gain distance from the masks and roles that you play in everyday life. Because the good news is: our true selves are still there – buried beneath all the layers of social conditioning.

Traveling brings you closer to yourself again

And that's probably the whole point: traveling can help us find or find ourselves again. Because when we travel we are confronted with new situations, places and actions every day. We are forced to step out of our comfort. I can give you a clue as to where you can find your self - namely in experience and adventure, to paraphrase Dr. Jordan Peterson to formulate:

You put yourself in a new situation. You learn. Neurologically, new parts of you turn on. The idea is: get out into the world and face a maximum number of challenges. More and more of you will then come into play. What would you be if everything that could be turned on was on?

Jordan B. Peterson

According to this approach, acting and experiencing is the best way to find yourself. Because according to this, you live your most authentic self when everything in you that could be switched on is switched on. What a haunting and inspiring image.

My personal experiences – This is how I found myself on journeys

I have always been a very curious and open person and have loved traveling since I was a child. For me, there is nothing more exciting than exploring new destinations that I have never been to before. One of my most important principles is: I never stay in the same hotel twice. I'm always trying something new. Over the years I have had many wonderful experiences on my travels.

I've always loved it, too dive – because the underwater world with sharks, dolphins, turtles and whales puts the supposedly real world that we experience every day in our everyday lives in a new perspective. We are so quick to believe that the world of everyday life, offices and forced interpersonal interactions is the real world.

And so one experience – which I have again and again – particularly helped me to find myself. When you realize that there is another world outside of your everyday life, it can be incredibly encouraging and inspiring to question everyday life. When you realize you have options for action, your true self breaks through more quickly.

In Southeast Asia you get closer

I wouldn't be writing a post about self-discovery while traveling if I hadn't experienced it first hand. No trip has had as much of an impact on me in this respect as my first trip to Thailand, which I did in my mid-20s. I had just finished my studies and wanted to see a little bit of the world. Southeast Asia is an adventurous region of the world that is ideal for finding yourself. I wasn't sure what I should do for a living or what would happen next for me. I certainly felt lost to some extent.

When you travel and experience things, you learn something about yourself - and the better you get to know yourself, the more you find yourself. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
When you travel and experience things, you learn something about yourself - and the better you get to know yourself, the more you find yourself.

The Land of Smiles then completely overwhelmed me. The whole region seemed like a big adventure playground to me. Fantastically beautiful beaches, friendly people and, above all, so much to experience. There is just so much you can do and experience in Southeast Asia. Add to that the heat, the noise, the smells - it was all just so incredibly different than back home in Germany. How much easier it is to make new friends and get in touch with people in Asia. I had a lot of friends in college.

But outside of university I always found it difficult to make new contacts. I thought it was me. In Thailand I learned that maybe it's not me after all. Added to this is the great freedom you have when you ride around on a motorcycle or scooter to explore and discover everything. It really makes you feel like the king of the world.

When you travel you learn something about yourself

And that's probably the whole point: when you travel, you learn something about yourself. Unless you spend 14 days lying on a beach and not moving during your trip, you're bound to learn something about yourself. You will learn how to react in certain situations. You will have contact with people and maybe make new friends. You will certainly also experience conflicts and see how you deal with them. In other words: you learn about yourself and the more you learn about yourself, the more you find yourself.

Finding tips on a journey to yourself – this is how it works

I think I have already given you some valuable tips on how you can find yourself on a journey. Basically, this is a process that you can figure out to a certain extent yourself and that no one can do for you. The prerequisite is the desire to get to know yourself better. And a trip is a catalyst to help you make that happen. Below I have listed a few points that can also help you find yourself.

1. Make your why as clear as possible

The more clearly you make it clear to yourself why you want to find yourself in the first place, the easier it will be for you. What are the difficulties in everyday life? Why have you lost touch with yourself? And would you like to find her again now of all times? A strong why, she is like a magnet that literally attracts you. Formulate it as best you can – preferably in writing.

2. Give yourself time, be patient and compassionate towards yourself

This point is about self-compassion. If you have lived in a certain everyday life for a long time, you will not be able to break out of this everyday life immediately on your journey. it just takes a certain amount of time. Be patient with yourself, act like a good friend to yourself and give yourself time to leave behind this everyday life that you left behind.

3. Choose your travel destination wisely

Basically, it doesn't really matter where you travel. What you get away from is much more important. Nevertheless, you should consider one Destination Choose something that you particularly like and makes your heart beat faster. For example, I found that I had to leave Germany to really relax. Southeast Asia is simply a fantastic region to forget and leave everything behind. If you are perhaps not quite experienced in traveling yet, I can only recommend Thailand as a travel destination to go in search of yourself.

4. Let go of your everyday life

There is a specific reason why you want to find yourself on a trip and not at home: it makes it easier for you to let go of your everyday life. Of course you can also find yourself at home - I also practice having better contact with myself at home through daily meditation and new adventures. But when you're traveling it's even better. Therefore, try as much as possible to let go of your everyday life while traveling. The better you do this, the easier it will be for you to find yourself on a journey.

5. Try something new

As I said at the beginning: The path to yourself lies in action, only to a limited extent in thinking and speaking. Put yourself in a new situation. Try something new. That could be a lot of things. You can go for a walk and explore the area. You can rent a scooter and explore the entire region. You can Schnorcheln or go surfing. For example, I love visiting new places Stand Up Paddling to explore.

You go to a bar and meet new people. Or you can get a diving license and discover the underwater world, there are so many things you can try out on a trip. The whole point is to do it and take action.

6. Be open to new people

This is perhaps the most important tip that you should definitely keep in mind. Be open to new people. Many of us find it difficult to even meet new people unless we are extremely extroverted. Firstly, things are much better on a trip than at home because everyone is relaxed and detached. Secondly, interesting people are the icing on the cake when traveling.

When you think back on your trip later, you will think back about the experiences with the people and not just the place you were. Your self is always connected to other people in one way or another.

Finding yourself is a long journey - it can be a lifetime journey. A trip is the best way to make it work.

My ultimate tip for self-discovery while traveling: write a diary

If you go on a journey to find yourself, you will experience many things on your tour. You will do things and you will act. And these experiences can help you get to know yourself better and find yourself little by little. That was the core message of this post so far. All good and right. And now in the last step I would like to give you the ultimate superpower, as I can say from my own experience: Write on your journey Diary and write down what you experienced. journaling is truly a superpower.

As you write down what you experienced, who you met, and how you acted and reacted, you will begin to recognize your own patterns and behaviors as you write. A light will literally shine. The more detailed and vividly you write down what you experienced, the more likely you will be able to draw conclusions about yourself. You will relive everything you experienced and realize your role in what happened. This doesn't double your chances of finding yourself, it multiplies them tenfold.

Finding yourself on a journey – does it work?

My conclusion

Nothing will lead you to yourself more easily than action. Taking action when you book a trip. The actions when you get up from the sofa, leave your apartment and travel to your destination. Because action changes – and above all, it changes you. You put yourself in a new situation. You experience something on the journey, something happens, you see new things, experience new situations and meet new people. You experience yourself in new situations.

And this is how you realize what is good and right for you. What you want to have in your life. What you want about yourself. And what you would rather banish from your life. There's no other way to do this better than traveling. When you leave everyday life far behind you, you discover the new sides of yourself. My conclusion is therefore clear: if you go on a trip, are open and curious, you will definitely find yourself along the way, then it will definitely work.
