My personal experiences with diving
I got my diving license – Open Water Diver – in 2005, shortly before I graduated from high school, and then many other diving courses right up to Master Scuba Diver. I've now accumulated almost 400 dives - which isn't that much when divided by the number of years. Diving was always an exciting hobby for me, but I didn't want to become a diving instructor. I wanted to comfortably dive into the warm water while on vacation, look at lots of colorful fish, corals and fascinating sea creatures such as sharks, dolphins, turtles, rays and whale sharks. And that's exactly how I handled it.
Instead, after studying politics and journalism, I applied to Tauch Magazin and worked there for a few years as an online editor for diving.de responsible - before I started my own travel blog Just-Wanderlust.com. During my time at Tauch Magazin I was fortunate enough to hit the water at some of the most beautiful dive sites in the world - including Indonesia, Thailand, the Maldives, Mauritius, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.
As you can see, my personal diving experiences have been quite adventurous so far. And I would like to give you this advice – if you are considering starting diving: Start your diving adventure, you will not regret it. Experiences are what make our lives valuable - and diving is a particularly great place to gather experiences and adventures.

FAQs diving - the most important questions and answers
If you are new to diving and maybe want to learn to dive first, I have put together the most important questions and answers about diving, scuba diving and scuba diving for you. I got my diving license in 2005 and have since done over 400 dives in some of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. I have tried to answer the FAQs as differently and honestly as possible.
How expensive is diving as a hobby?
Diving is basically a comparatively expensive hobby. You start by getting your first diving license - the Open Water Diver (OWD). This basic diving course costs between 300 and 500 euros. The following advanced courses such as Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Master Scuba Diver and Divemaster cost between 200 and 800 euros.
Of course, that's not all: You certainly want to buy diving equipment - it costs between 1500 and 3000 euros, depending on whether you are buying new or used. You can also rent the equipment from a diving center, which makes sense especially on a diving holiday. Additional costs arise if you then want to go diving: A diving excursion in Germany with a diving school costs between 50 and 150 euros per day. A full day trip on vacation to a beautiful destination with boat, food and dives can cost between 80 and 250 euros. Not to mention, of course, the vacation - for example in Egypt, the Maldives or Thailand - that you have to book first.
Basically, as always in life: You can spend very different amounts of money, depending on how high your personal budget is. You can spend 500 euros a year for diving or 20.000 euros - both are easily possible.
How dangerous is diving?
There is no general answer to how dangerous diving is. In any case, it is important that you complete well-founded diving training with a large diving association such as SSI, PADI, VDST or iac. Most recreational divers around the world begin their training with SSI or PADI. In your beginner courses you should learn the safety of diving, scuba diving and scuba diving confidently in order to be able to handle the potential dangers of diving.
Secondly, it makes a big difference whether you are a vacation diver who looks at colorful corals and fish at 30 to 50 meters with 28 meters visibility and 2 degrees water temperature or whether you are a technical diver who scuba diving with 8 meters visibility and 70 degrees water temperature and dives into a lake in Central Europe at a depth of XNUMX meters.
Basically, diving is not dangerous, because the risk can be managed very well based on your level of training and your dive planning. When diving, the focus should always be on fun and conservative dive planning that suits your skills. According to statistics on diving, this sport is very safe. According to a survey by the RSTC (Recreational Scuba Training Council), there are only 3 diving accidents for every 100.000 divers.
Is diving an extreme sport?
Yes, certain diving disciplines are an extreme sport. Technical diving and cave diving in particular require a high level of physical and mental fitness, as these extreme sports can push UW athletes to their limits.
However, if you as a vacation diver look at colorful corals and fish at ten to 30 meters with 50 meters of visibility and 28 degrees water temperature, this is not an extreme sport. On the contrary: You can relax wonderfully and it has something of a mindfulness exercise or meditation.
How deep can you dive?
The current world record was set in 2014 by Ahmed Gamal Gabr. He dived 332,35 meters into the Blue Hole near Dahab on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. With this he set the world record for scuba divers. The record is a logistical masterpiece, because divers breathe special gas mixtures at this depth. Gabr had a team of 14 and 94 tanks with her to take care of things. According to experts, it is possible for people to submerge a maximum of 450 meters while scuba diving - but no one has managed that to date. If you get your diving license and start as a hobby diver, you will of course not dive so deep, but only dive into relaxed depths between 10 and 40 meters.
Can you go diving without a diving license?
You can only urgently advise against diving without a diving license. It is not forbidden in Germany - however, you will not get any diving equipment, no bottles or bottle fillings in the rental shop. Without a safety briefing from a well-founded diving course, diving without a diving license can quickly be fatal. If you are on vacation and do not yet have a diving license, contact the local diving school and get advice. For example, you can go snorkeling without a diving license and see a lot of colorful corals and fish from the surface of the water.
Is diving more than a hobby?
Yes, diving is more than a hobby - it is a passion that will last your entire life. Because if you haven't been diving before, you will discover the world from a completely new perspective while diving. It's a huge adventure and also has a certain addictive factor.
Can i dive
Yes, you can dive too. If you are physically fit, can swim, and have no medical reservations, you can go diving too. Children aged eight and over can have their first diving experience.

However, some divers claim to have dived up to 70 meters with a compressed air cylinder. However, this can be life-threatening. Hobby divers should adhere to the guidelines of their diving association - and these are usually 40 meters maximum diving depth for compressed air cylinders.
What does scuba diving mean?
Scuba diving is another term used for scuba diving or scuba diving. A compressed air cylinder is usually used for diving - for example as a hobby diver on vacation. Nitrox diving is a variant. The air in the diving cylinder is enriched with a higher oxygen content, which, however, reduces the maximum diving depth. Dive into the most beautiful places in the world on a diving holiday
There are supposed to be many people among the divers who pride themselves on exploring the local quarry pond and enjoying it. This is the one group of divers who will jump into any water hole, no matter how small, and go diving there. Quarry ponds can be really nice when the water is clear and warm in the summer and the lake is completely populated with small fish, pike and carp.
On the other hand, there is probably a much larger group of divers who love traveling and want to discover not only unusual travel destinations and the most beautiful places in the world, but also the most beautiful diving spots. Combining diving with traveling is the ultimate idea. Many of the most beautiful diving regions in the world lie south of Germany: local destinations such as the Mediterranean with Mallorca and Sardinia, the Canary Islands attract with incredibly great diving destinations such as Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote.
Or the Red Sea from Jordan to Egypt are among the favorite spots of German divers. We have already been to Sharm El Sheik, Makadi Bay, Safaga, Marsa Alam and on an Egypt liveaboard for diving on the Red Sea. So why wander into the distance?
There is so much life and more to discover in these places that you could devote yourself entirely to this girl as the only baptism. But diving and traveling are closely linked, so many divers go out into the big wide world: excellent exotic diving sites can be found for diving in Thailand, Indonesia or the Philippines, Myanmar or Vietnam. We enjoyed diving in Asia best on Koh Lipe, Koh Phangan and on the Thailand liveaboard.
In addition, of course, a little further away in Australia and Oceania. The top diving destinations are also located in the Indian Ocean Maldives (travelogue) and Seychelles, which are so beautiful with their underwater world that they attract divers to just magnetic. Diving holidays on these islands is definitely one of the best divers can experience.
But also a view to the west is worthwhile: there are also diving areas abound. From Madeira to the Azores to the Caribbean with its countless dive sites around the islands of Curacao, Bonaire, Roatan, Cuba and many more, and also along the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico are diving destinations that are second to none. The big fish spots Galapagos and Socorro are definitely among the best in the world.

Diving with sharks - action, adrenaline and above all enthusiasm
Diving with sharks is probably one of the most exciting ways to get involved in diving. In many diving destinations around the world, divers can dive with sharks and observe the predatory fish in their natural environment. The fascinating animals are anything but bloodthirsty monsters. They are an important part of the food chain and fulfill a variety of tasks in our oceans. Anyone who has ever dived with a shark will not soon forget it. We have already been diving with sharks in the Red Sea, seen sharks in Thailand and you see Maldives sharks on almost every dive.
The king of the sea is probably the great white shark. It is a huge predator that lives in the world's oceans and has caused fear and terror in humans for ages. The largest great white shark of all time was spotted in Mexico. The giant shark was named Deep Blue. However, experts believe that greater white sharks may still exist. In any case, the predatory fish are seriously threatened by humans and could become extinct in the near future.
Diving equipment - the right equipment is the be-all and end-all
As mentioned earlier, today's scuba diving is not that different from its beginnings just under 50 years ago to today. This is mainly due to the diving equipmentthat of course from the beginning to the Needs of the diver was adapted: In principle, divers today still use many of the pieces of equipment from back then, which of course have only been significantly further developed today.
The diver still carries a steel or aluminum cylinder, attached to a buoyancy compensator on his back and breathes from a so-called regulator, which is attached to the cylinder and reduces the pressure of the compressed air from the cylinder to such an extent that the diver can ultimately function normally Breathes air or an oxygen-enriched mixture called Nitrox, which requires a little additional training.
Diving suit – to insulate the body against the cold
In the water, the human body is very cool, so divers wear a wetsuit. Of course, this is available for different temperatures either as a shorty or as a long version. In addition, one distinguishes diving suits in wet suits, which allow water to flow in and out again. In semi-dry suits, let the water in but not out, so the stored water warms up to body temperature and warms the diver. Third, there are dry suits that keep the diver completely dry and warm much more.
Diving mask, diving fins, snorkel
For scuba divers and as well for snorkelers is a so-called ABC equipment absolutely necessary: These include diving fins, diving mask and a snorkel. There are of course several different variants of diving masks. The best way to do that is to consult in a dive shop. Also with the dipping fins one differentiates first in device fins, in which one can put the foot together with a shoe and completely normal fins, which have a foot part, into which one puts the naked foot.
BCD - Create buoyancy underwater
ohne BCD (on dive centers abroad, often referred to as BCD or Buoyance Control Device) is nothing when diving: This so-called jacket carries the bottle and is worn by the diver like a vest. It is connected to the bottle and can be inflated by pressing a button. This allows the diver to make buoyancy on the water surface and adjust the amount of air in the jacket under water so that it can float freely in the water at any time and does not sink like a stone.
Diving watches - statement and precise measuring instrument
Dive Watches There are today in all imaginable colors, shapes and price ranges. The chic wristwatches are both an elegant statement and a statement high-precision measuring instrumentthat you can use the dive computer, for example, as a back-up instrument to the dive computer to additionally secure. Diving watches are usually particularly waterproof and can withstand high pressure, have a unidirectional rotating bezel and a helium valve, with which they can usually make the pressure equalization automatically. The high quality Watches for divers also have illuminated dials and specially hardened mineral glass or even better: sapphire crystal.
The Watches is available with a quartz movement, mechanical movement or, in the meantime, also as solar variants. Among the most famous manufacturers of divers watches are the brands Casio, Citizen, Certina, Chris Benz, Davosa, Oris, Rolex, Seiko, Tag Heuer and Wempe. In our big clock guide we present the most important models and show you how Buy divers watches cheap can.
The history of diving - it all started with Hans Hass and Jacques Cousteau
today Diver walk in the footsteps of the great diving pioneers Hans Hass and Jacques Cousteau, who made this sport accessible to a broad target group in the 60s and 70s. The early days of diving are not as different from today's forms as one might think: people still dive with mask, snorkel and fins - either as a snorkeler, who glides comfortably along the water surface and breathes through the snorkel, or as an apnea diver, who glides meters deep with just one breath.
The common scuba diver, on the other hand, still dives with a tank strapped to their back with an inflatable vest—not much has changed since then. The easy one scuba diver breathes compressed air or Nitrox, a slightly oxygen-enriched air mixture.
