What can you see while snorkeling in the Baltic Sea?

The Baltic Sea is even an excellent spot for snorkeling. The water is particularly suitable for beginners. You can start in shallow water without any problems and slowly feel your way into somewhat deeper realms. Already on the sandy bottom in the shallow water you can discover small baby flounders, fish and smaller crabs while snorkeling on the Baltic Sea. A few meters off the coast there is a seagrass meadow on many beach sections - and it is really exciting there.

You can really discover a lot in sea grass at a depth of just under 1,5 meters. Regular shell formations are there. Huge crabs hang around there. They are actually not particularly shy and those who dive down to them can examine them up close. In addition, when snorkeling in the Baltic Sea you will find a number of starfish lying around on the bottom. But similar to the Diving also applies here: watching yes, touch or take with you in any case.

In between, there is also one or the other fish, which, however, also mostly sits between the seagrass. Free-swimming fish there are extremely rare. We have seen only one shoal of fish throughout the year and it immediately disappeared - thanks to overfishing. If you still want to see fish, you have to go snorkeling in tropical waters. And maybe you will come across that too Dolphin, who was recently seen at Travemünde in the Bay of Lübeck.

Snorkeling in the Baltic Sea - What should you consider?

The sea is often very tricky and you should definitely keep a few things in mind when snorkeling in the Baltic Sea Want: There are some nasty and strong currents that are not immediately apparent and pull you down. Every year, therefore, several people drown in the Baltic Sea. You should therefore follow a number of rules if you want to snorkel in the Baltic Sea.

  1. Stick to the local swimming rules and rules
  2. Do not overestimate your skills as a swimmer and snorkeler
  3. If possible, bring along a certified buoyancy aid such as a rescue buoy
  4. If possible, do not go snorkeling in the Baltic Sea alone
  5. Remains within sight of water rescue (DLRG)

Snorkeling in the Baltic Sea experience report – many other exciting leisure activities by the sea

My detailed conclusion

The Baltic Sea is wonderful in summer Sunbathing and bathing, swimming and snorkeling. We at Just Wanderlust are happy that the sea is almost right on our doorstep and are therefore in the water at every opportunity. Either for swimming, for stand up paddling in the Baltic Sea, for snorkeling and every now and then even for Diving with us near Scharbeutz (travel report).

The holiday region also has a lot to offer for those who don't like going into the water. You can go on holiday on the Baltic Sea in spring, experience many leisure activities such as surfing and even in winter a holiday on the Baltic Sea can be wonderful, if you can get there by horse for riding on the beach, for example.

With a bit of luck you can actually spot one of the dolphins. Sightings of marine mammals have increased in recent years: numerous dolphins were sighted in the Baltic Sea as early as 2016 and another dolphin, christened Freddy, even overwintered in the Baltic Sea. But swimming with a mask, snorkel and fins is certainly one of the most beautiful leisure activities at sea. Our conclusion is therefore clear: snorkeling in the Baltic Sea is totally worth it.
