Many beaches and bays on Phuket are simply heavenly. Crystal-clear, turquoise water, palm trees and many tropical sandy beaches are just perfect for an extensive beach vacation. Those who like to get on the surf board can try out SUP on Phuket on most beaches and experience stand up paddling on Thailand's dream beaches. What is there to discover in paddling? And which beaches on Phuket are the most suitable? We give you an overview.
The sea is very calm. I can see the bottom of the bay and see a multitude of colorful fish under my SUP board. The animals practically swim right under me like in an aquarium. The sun is slowly leaning towards the horizon because it is already late afternoon. And while many bathers are slowly packing up, I paddle through the shallow water and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at sea. I feel one with my surroundings here in the south of Thailand - a board under my feet gives me a feeling of freedom.
Really relax on the water
Every now and then there is a snorkeler or kayaker out and about. Sometimes I hear the engine of a longtail boat in the distance. I paddle to the uninhabited island of Koh Man, just a few hundred meters from Ya Nui Beach in the very south of Phuket (travel report) is removed. A dream, I think, this silence on the water in the late afternoon. All alone on the sea with the board. Just a few targeted strokes of the paddle to get me moving.
I can really relax - it's almost like meditation. SUP on Phuket is incredibly beautiful, Thailand is simply the ideal Destination for stand-up paddling. That's why I go stand-up paddling on Thailand's dream beaches almost every day on my trip.

What is there to discover at Stand Up Paddling on Phuket?
Stand up paddling has also become one of the most popular water sports on Phuket. This is certainly because stand-up paddling is much easier than surfing, for example, which requires a little practice. All you need to SUP is a board and your paddle - and if you can't stand on the board yet, just kneel down.
The beaches on Phuket are ideal for SUP for beginners and advanced. Everyone who does that Stand Up Paddling want to try it out, they can make their first attempts at the SUP on Phuket. There are SUP boards on almost all beaches, which you can borrow for the equivalent of ten euros per hour.
A tour is worth it: you can escape the hustle and bustle of the beach on the water. As a sun worshiper you can get a wonderful tan on the SUP board. And if you decide to do some sport on holiday, stand-up paddling will automatically give you a full-body workout.
There is also a lot to discover while stand-up paddling on the beaches: When SUPing on Phuket, a whole lot of creatures from the animal world in Thailand can be spotted - such as colorful fish and larger sea creatures - occasionally a turtle is spotted, Thailand- Sharks or a ray scurry under the board.
The most beautiful beaches for stand up paddling
There are incredibly beautiful beaches, especially in the west and south of Phuket, that are ideal for stand-up paddling. The long, gently sloping bays are perfect for beginners who want to have their first experience on the SUP board. I recently preferred the beaches in the very south because they are more idyllic and generally a little quieter. In my opinion they are the best beaches on Phuket for SUP the Ya Nui Beach, Nai Harn Beach and Kata Beach. You can usually rent a SUP board there. The big surf schools and rentals are on the other, bigger beaches - especially in the west.

Ya Nui Beach on the Phuket - the perfect beach for stand up paddling
The small Ya Nui beach in the very south of Phuket is by far my favorite beach on Phuket - not only for stand up paddling, but in general. But it was also ideal for stand-up paddling. Unfortunately there is only one board there, but it was in very good condition. The carbon paddle was also of the latest design. I started in the bay and was able to explore this scenically particularly attractive area wonderfully.
I only had on my swimming trunks, a T-shirt and my smartphone Marine case for the photos. In front of the beach there is a small, uninhabited island. Experienced stand-up paddlers can easily circle the island. On the side facing the sea, however, there can be a lot of waves and currents, so you should be careful and stay in the shadow of the bay if necessary.
SUP school and surf school on Phuket - Where can you learn stand-up paddling?
If you are planning to learn stand up paddling and want to rent a board from a professional surf school Kata surfing in kata and Freedom Boardsports Recommended in Rawai. The popular Nautilus Dive diving school is directly connected to Kata Surfing. The provider is a contact point for both surfers and divers - therefore probably a water sports center where you can take courses and rent SUP boards. I rented a board there and would recommend it at any time.
The provider teaches both surfing and diving according to modern international standards and gives you the best possible introduction to SUP and surfing. The reviews on the internet speak for themselves: Phuket Surfing – Surf School Phuket & Nautilus Diving received an average of 4,9 out of 5 stars. If you spend your vacation in the southwest of Phuket, the surf school and diving school is the first choice.

Safety with SUP on Phuket - currents and other dangers
Stand up paddling on Phuket is actually a relatively safe affair. If I did it with that SUP in winter Compared to Germany, SUP is much easier and safer in tropical climates. Beginners in particular should still be vigilant and careful, because you can easily get into problematic situations that are not your fault. We have put together the most important safety tips for SUP beginners if you want to go stand-up paddling on Phuket.
- Pick a provider that has reasonable prices and uses new equipment
- Inquire in advance what to do in the event of damage and what financial contribution you have to make - often you are not insured on the board
- Beware of long-tail boats and speed boats - avoid them
- it can get crowded on the beach - take care of swimmers, snorkelers and especially children
- during the tour there can be wind, waves and currents that drive you away - keep an eye on the weather conditions and adjust your tour if necessary - it is best to always start against the wind and then with the wind and current back to the starting point
- wearing a life jacket or an inflatable life buoy
Stand Up Paddling on Phuket: a SUP tour in paradise?
My conclusion
Stand up paddling in tropical climes is particularly beautiful in winter and spring - you can experience a wonderfully beautiful summer holiday in the form of an island holiday in Thailand during the best travel time from January to March. Phuket is an incredibly diverse destination in terms of landscape, where there is a lot to discover and which can of course also be explored incredibly well from the water. I was able to spend hours on the board just taking in and enjoying the landscape and the Indian Ocean. SUP on Phuket brings a little adventure and variety to your beach vacation.
It definitely had a certain addictive factor. I had already agreed with the landlords in advance that my time on the board would automatically be extended if I wasn't back after an hour. If you don't want to be driven around in a long-tail boat and can't do much with conventional kayaks, you can explore the area wonderfully with SUP on Phuket. Dream beaches, remote islands and beautiful water await you - an unforgettable experience.
