SUP on the Alster in Hamburg – tips & experiences

by

Stand Up Paddling has established itself as a sport for water sports enthusiasts on the Outer and Inner Alster in Hamburg, alongside sailing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing. Not without reason: the large reservoir in downtown Hamburg, with its surrounding canals, villas and parks, is one of the most versatile and varied bodies of water in Germany. This makes the Hamburg Alster one of the best places for stand up paddling far and wide. I swung myself onto the board and tried SUP on the Hamburg Alster. I also give valuable tips on entry options, routes and SUP rentals on the Alster. A field report.

18 p.m., closing time. People go to work after work, sit comfortably with a cool drink in one of the countless cafés, in the beer garden at the city park or have dinner in a good restaurant. It's summer in Hamburg and almost the whole city is on its feet. Many leave to jog or to the gym.

But it's not just the ice cream parlors that are full in the summer months, the Alster - more precisely the Inner and Outer Alster - is also busy. The “SUP Port” on Heilwigstrasse near the Krugkoppelbrücke also gets really crowded after work in the warm season. Stand-up paddlers, kayakers and dinghy captains let their boats into the Alster here.

Stand up paddling on the Alster in Hamburg is so beautiful.

It gets crowded at the entrance

There is a jetty there - centrally located - where stand-up paddlers can launch their boards and start paddling. Kayakers, canoeists, rowers, a Belli boat tour operator and, above all, stand-up paddlers prepare their boards at the turning point on the jetty. On sunny and hot summer days there is a lot of activity here.

Not without reason: a SUP tour on the Outer Alster on a warm summer day can be like a vacation in everyday life. You are in the middle of the city, but still have your privacy on the board, can take a deep breath after a stressful day and enjoy the last rays of sunshine of the day while gliding over the water.

One of the most beautiful SUP locations?

Sure, it doesn't compare to stand up paddle activities in tropical regions like that SUP in the Maldives or the SUP on Phuket, where you have crystal-clear, turquoise water and the fish swim under you - nevertheless, a trip by SUP or boat can be wonderfully relaxing and is a welcome change from the Running lap or a bike ride. Basically, stand up paddling on the Alster is an ideal leisure activity, as it is suitable for both SUP beginners (tips) and advanced is suitable.

In my experience report about the SUP on the Alster in Hamburg, I would like to share my enthusiasm for the sport and the location with you - and if it inspires you to try stand-up paddling on the Alster, this blog article has fully fulfilled its purpose. So let's go - see you then on a board on the Alster!

My experiences with the SUP on the Alster in Hamburg

I wrote this article a few years ago and have updated it since then, as my experiences with the SUP on the Alster in Hamburg have expanded. In the course of time I was able to try out some routes and also test some entrances. The most important thing I've learned lately is that it gets busier in the summer. In the evenings after work it is almost impossible to find a parking space at the popular entry points and it is super crowded on the water – despite the huge area of the Outer Alster.

I've been paddling around on the Alster since 2015 and meanwhile I've been able to gain some experience with SUP in Hamburg.
I've been paddling around on the Alster since 2015 and meanwhile I've been able to gain some experience with SUP in Hamburg.

Of course, that doesn't stop us from paddling. In the morning, at noon and in the afternoon it is less crowded and you can do your rounds relaxed. The route from the Stadtpark to the Alster and back has particularly appealed to me lately. I also visited the Binnenalster again after a long time and was amazed at how far you can get there. You can practically paddle to the town hall and moor in front of the lock. But my favorite route is still the one from the Krugkupplungbrücke to the Rondeelteich and further along the small Alster canals. This route is very varied - and there is always something new to discover.

SUP is a natural leisure activity for city dwellers

In any case, my long-term experience is clear: I can only recommend SUP on the Alster to anyone who is looking for an active leisure activity. The Alster with its many canals and rivers offers stand up paddlers many opportunities to experience the city from a different perspective. I am always particularly enthusiastic about the variety of routes that I have tried. From picturesque parks to busy streets and bridges to idyllic river courses, everything was there. The entry points were also well chosen and made it easy to get started with the board.

A sense of community on the water

Another plus point was the friendliness and helpfulness of the other water sports enthusiasts on the Alster. I never felt unwelcome, but was always greeted in a friendly manner and even received helpful tips. SUP on the Alster is especially recommended for everyone who needs a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and wants to relax in nature. It is also a great opportunity for families with children to spend time together in the fresh air. As I hopefully made clear in my report on Stand Up Paddling in Hamburg, all in all I can fully recommend the SUP on the Alster in Hamburg and I'm already looking forward to my next tour on the board.

SUP in Hamburg - The Alster offers perfect conditions for Stand Up Paddling

The Hamburg Outer Alster is the perfect place to go Stand Up Paddling: The water is relatively clean and sometimes even clear, mostly calm and all in all, relatively flat. With a maximum depth of four and a half meters and a frequent depth of just two meters, the Outer Alster is not particularly deep. And also the pollution holds for a dammed lake, which is fed in the middle of a city by a river, absolutely within limits. Because the Alster is a river that flows in Schleswig Holstein at Henstedt-Ulzburg north of Hamburg rises, and flows into a large outlet, the Outer Alster, which in turn is connected to the much smaller Binnenalster in the center of Hamburg.

This construct of river and lake is surrounded by a multitude of smaller canals that extend over the entire urban area. In addition, the Outer Alster is fed via the Wandse and the Osterbek, i.e. two other rivers. Once around the Außenalster you can reach 7,4 kilometers - a circuit around the water is a little shorter, like a look at mine Sports Watch reveals.

Stand Up Paddling on the Alster - the lake as an ideal body of water for a SUP tour

Heilwigstraße is a small cul-de-sac in the solid Hamburg district of Harvestehude and differs little from the surrounding streets with many villas. If it weren't for the excellent access to the Außenalster! Because the cul-de-sac is not particularly busy, there is almost a parking space guarantee for the otherwise precarious Hamburg parking conditions. And even from the end of the street you wear it surfboard or kayak maximally 70 meters to the water. That's probably the reason why kayak riders, canoe riders and all sorts of water sportsmen let their equipment into the water here in summer, also in spring and autumn.

So quickly assembled the board and off into the water: The small footbridge made it easy for the athletes to let their sports equipment in and simply stand on it or sit in a kayak. North of the Krugkoppelbrücke you find yourself directly on a small lake, which belongs to the so-called Alsterstreek and which is ideal for acclimatizing yourself with the Alster, doing SUP yoga or simply trying out a few exercises to ensure a safe stand on board to get. The Water is so flat here, you can touch the bottom with the paddle.

From here you are now spoiled for choice: Several routes on the Alster are available. There is a route to the north, one to the northeast towards Stadtpark and a third excellent route to the south, at the end of which you can reach the Binnenalster and refresh yourself in the stream of the Alster Fountain. However, this route is so long that it can be split into two to three different variants.

FAQs SUP in Hamburg - the most important questions and answers

Stand-Up Paddling (SUP) on the Hamburg Alster is becoming increasingly popular and offers a great way to explore Hamburg and the surrounding area. But before you jump onto the board, there are often a few questions. This article answers the most important FAQs about SUP in Hamburg, from equipment to booking courses and tours. So those interested can be sure that they are well prepared for their next SUP adventure on the Alster.

Where can you ride a SUP in Hamburg?

The good news first: You can ride your SUP on the Alster in a very relaxed manner. You can use the large area of the Outer Alster, but you can also drive on the Inner Alster. I recently paddled until just before the town hall. However, you should keep a large distance from the lock and watch out for ships in the tunnels. I therefore recommend that you orient yourself in the direction of the Alster canals, paddle up to Haynspark and follow the course of the Alster, to the Rondeelteich, down the Isebek Canal or up the Goldbek Canal to the city park.

Large parts of the Elbe and the port, on the other hand, are sparred for stand up paddling - completely rightly, in my opinion. After all, these are busy shipping lanes and rivers. Rivers should definitely be reserved for experienced and advanced paddlers.

Where is it not allowed to ride SUP?

Basically, riding a SUP is taboo in nature reserves. But lock areas, port facilities and busy waterways should also be avoided. Often the SUP ride is also prohibited in swimming zones - if not, one should behave accordingly carefully when crossing. In principle, ships must not be impaired during stand up paddling when crossing their fairway.

SUP on the Alster - routes for beginners and advanced

The Alster, with its widely branched canals and the division into the Outer and Inner Alster, is a true paradise for stand-up paddlers and, like the Baltic Sea, offers countless opportunities. Even after dozens of tours, I still haven't explored all the routes on the Alster. Nevertheless, I would like to introduce you to three selected routes that I think are particularly worthwhile and that you should definitely try to discover the Alster on your board.

In addition to the following routes, it's always fun to simply paddle with the board in the middle of the Outer Alster. This offers an interesting panoramic view and a whole new perspective on Hamburg. But if you go far from the shore, you should be careful: Sailing boats and Alster steamers, but also changing wind conditions and sometimes strong waves have to be taken into account in the middle of the lake. You are guaranteed to get a completely new view of our beautiful city!

Route 1: Follow the Alsterlauf - Alsterstreek - to the north

One of the recommended routes for Stand Up Paddlers on the Alster is the Alsterlauf - Alsterstreek - in the north. The tour begins with you hopping on your board and paddling north. You follow the course of the Alstertreek and paddle on the towpath until you reach the Haynspark, the Alte Alster and the Eppendorfer Mühlenteich. Here you can take a short break before paddling further along the river. For a change, the Skagerrak Canal and the Island Canal can also be navigated on the way there or back.

Caution is advised here. The Alster Canal is not very wide in some places and other water sports enthusiasts such as rowers can be overlooked. So you should be prepared for encounters and paddle defensively. You should also pay attention to the Alster steamers, which can sometimes cause significant waves in the canals. All in all, this route offers a beautiful tour through the canals and canals of the Alster, where you can gather many beautiful impressions of Hamburg's nature and architecture.

Route 2: Ronde pond and Stadtparksee

The second tour is also beautiful: First you pass the Krugkupplungbrücke, then immediately left past the sailing school to the Rondeel Canal and on to the Rondeeltich. Here you can relax, sunbathe or do SUP yoga. It's as quiet as nature, except that you're in the middle of the city between Hamburg villas. If you don't want to stay here, paddle back along the Rondeel Canal and turn left into the Goldbek Canal.

The Rondeelteich is definitely one of the hot spots for stand up paddling on the Alster. Photo: Michael B.

Follow the canal for a few kilometers. Then you reach the Stadtparksee. There you can do a lap of honor on the lake in front of the wonderful summer scenery of the city park. A little tip: don't forget your towel on hot days, because here you can jump off the board and swim a lap before returning to the starting point.

Route 3: Outer Alster and Binnenalster

As mentioned at the beginning, the Outer Alster Tour is almost 7,4 kilometers long and can be easily mastered by experienced stand up paddlers. Nevertheless, this route has it all: Because it is very long for beginners and first leads to the Outer Alster. First you pass the Krugkupplungbrücke again. You have to be careful here: the Alster steamers cross this bridge relatively often, which can lead to close encounters and waves in the tunnel.

Simply fantastic: At Stand Up Paddling on the Alster you can plan a different route every day. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

But once the stand up paddler has left the eye of the needle behind, the Outer Alster shows itself in all its glory: the entire lake lies in front of the SUP, embedded in the Hamburg skyline. The town hall, the Elbphilharmonie and the harbor cranes on the horizon are immediately recognizable. Here you can paddle wonderfully close to the shore on the right shoulder.

Water sports on the Alster in Hamburg - sometimes the lake is completely full

But at least on beautiful summer days, the second difficulty of this tour becomes apparent: the lake is full of water sports enthusiasts. Sailboats, kayaks, rowers and other SUPs are everywhere. Because it is so crowded, a simple rule applies on the Outer Alster: right before left. Because so many amateurs are out and about on the lake, it has been made easy and the rule of thumb has been set right before left. As a stand-up paddler, however, I would not necessarily insist on my right of way over a somewhat more solid sailboat.

Always an alternative route ready: The Hamburg Outer Alster is just perfect for Stand Up Paddling. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Anyone who gets involved can enjoy the tour on the Outer Alster to the fullest. The architecture all around, the panorama with the sailing boats and the cool water invite you to linger and relax. The tour leads over the right shoulder to the Kennedy Bridge and from there to the Binnenalster. It may sound strange at first, but in Hamburg you can paddle on the small lake in the middle of the city. The ultimate Hamburg panorama awaits the partners here: Jungfernstieg and the surrounding streets as well as the famous Alster fountain, which water sports enthusiasts can admire at close range.

SUP on the Alster - entry points for your SUP tour

To get straight to the point: there are guaranteed to be dozens of good entry points to launch the stand up paddling board on the Alster. But as is so often the case, some are better than others. We've tried five so far and have done well with all of them.

Entry 1: Heilwigstraße at the Oak Park in Harvestehude

The already mentioned entrance at Heilwigstraße in Harvestehude is really great. From here you can easily get into the water. There are usually plenty of free parking spaces on the street and you can enter the water either via a jetty or a ramp. This entrance is certainly one of the most convenient ways to get into the Alster with a SUP. In recent years, a toilet has even been installed here in summer, which provides additional comfort.

When there are large crowds, the parking spaces in Heilwigstraße am Eichenpark are sometimes occupied. An alternative is then to park at the bottom of the towpath. There is always a free parking space here and access is also quite easy.

Entry 2: Kuhmühlenteich in Eilbek

The Kuhmühlenteich is a small lake at the lower end of the Eilbek Canal and also an ideal place to start for all SUP fans who live in Uhlenhorst and the surrounding area. From here you can paddle in five minutes to the Alster and below the Mundsburg Bridge to the Outer Alster. Overall, getting in is a little less comfortable than on Heilwigstraße, but there are usually enough free parking spaces here as well.

Entry 3: Südring am Stadtpark

The third entrance, which is more to be understood as Alster entrance in a broader sense, is also attractive. At the level of the boat rental at the Stadtparksee you can put your board in the water and from there paddle comfortably in the direction of the Rondeel pond and the Outer Alster. There are also very good parking options on the Südring outside of peak traffic times and you can easily put your board on the water at the Stadtparksee.

Entry 4: Entry at the fairy pond bridge

The Alster can also be easily reached via the Feenteich Bridge. There are enough parking spaces along the street Schöne Aussicht. A disadvantage is that in the evenings after work and on weekends there are a lot of people strolling there. If that doesn't bother you, you can go straight into the water at the Feenteichbrücke and paddle directly.

Entry 5: Entry towpath / corner Fernsicht / corner Krugkoppelbrücke

The good and proven parking lot on Heilwigstraße is more and more often completely blocked. If you can't find a parking space there, you can easily switch to the towpath. There are always parking spaces down at the corner of Fernsicht and Krugkupplungbrücke. There you can set up your Stand Up Paddling Board on the hard shoulder in front of the pedestrians. Getting in is easy: the embankment slopes gently and it's easy to get into the water.

Basically, there are no limits to your creativity when entering the water. You can also lower your SUP board into the water where there is a parking space near a gently sloping bank. Be careful not to block any pedestrian or bicycle paths or to impair passers-by in any way.

SUP on the Alster in Hamburg - why the place is ideal for stand up paddling

My conclusion

In my experience report about Stand Up Paddling on the Alster in Hamburg, I shared my enthusiasm for the sport and the beautiful location with you. If you are already curious about SUP on the Alster, I hope that this article will make you want to try it yourself. The Alster is a fantastic place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax on the water. So let's dare the adventure together and meet on a board on the Alster!

The ideal place for SUP?

So why is the Alster the ideal place for Stand Up Paddling? Die-hard Hamburgers would now say: Because Hamburg is the most beautiful city Germany is. But that alone is not enough as an argument. The reasons why the Alster is so well suited for stand-up paddling are more diverse: First, the Alster is a river, i.e. a flowing body of water - basically very similar to that SUP on the Dove Elbe. But it is very calm and has relatively little current in most places. Secondly, the Alster is very flat, you can often even stand near the shore. In addition, the water for a lake in a big city is pretty clean.

Thirdly, the Alster is extremely versatile and when planning your route you can think of a new tour for every day. There are said to be water sports enthusiasts who are on the Alster all year round up to five days a week. Fourth, you meet many like-minded people. There are not only SUP clubs and around the Alster SUP schools, as soon as the board is inflated or discharged you will meet like-minded people. So you do not paddle alone as a single paddler!
