Wearables tests – with smartwatches and fitness watches the future on your wrist?

A watch on your wrist that you can use to make phone calls. A few years ago that was still science fiction. And it has become more of a standard in recent years. Smartwatches are smart computers on the wrist that support the user in many situations. In everyday life, in many situations they allow you to simply leave your smartphone in your pocket. And when doing sports, they act as heart rate monitors to help measure heart rate, distances, calorie consumption and strain on the body.

When traveling, they are particularly useful for navigation and for making an emergency call if things get difficult. Wearbles are available as outdoor watches, fitness watches, watches for adventurers and multifunctional sports watches. They support the wearer in everyday life, answer calls, receive notifications and encourage the user to take care of their health, breathe properly and get up regularly. While wearables were initially often dismissed as toys, many users now see smartwatches as a real help when traveling, doing sports and in everyday life.

Wearables definition – more than smart computers on your wrist?

By definition, wearables are computer technology whose main feature is that they can be worn on the body - whether on the head, wrist or other parts of the body. The wearable computer is intended to support the user in everyday life by receiving information, evaluations and instructions from their smart product.

The wearable usually does not stand alone, but is networked - with the smartphone or directly with the Internet. That's why wearables are also part of the Internet of Things. Wearables can be used to explicitly measure bodily functions.

Wearbles are developing rapidly

For example, your pulse can be measured with smartwatches, and in the future you will even be able to determine your blood sugar level with smart watches. Wearables are currently used particularly frequently in the areas of health, lifestyle and fitness and are already being used by many people. Intelligent computers are now also finding their way into nursing and medicine. You can now do an ECG with some smartwatches.

Wearables will continue to develop in the future. Smart watches continue to improve with each generation. Digital glasses are still in development, but should soon conquer the market and make our lives better when doing sports, traveling and in everyday life.

The smartwatch is the most important wearable

The smartwatch has now become particularly popular among wearables. Regardless of whether you call them a sports watch, fitness watch, fitness tracker or wearable - the smart watches have already been sold millions of times and are becoming increasingly popular with each new model generation - which is not least due to the constantly new features and functions of the smartwatches. Development has accelerated rapidly since around 2015, when the first generation of the Apple Watch came onto the market. The US company's watch is now by far the market leader among wearables (source: The report of Statista, as of: 2023).

Other manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi have also followed suit and also launched very high-quality wearables. These products compete with the established manufacturers of fitness watches and outdoor watches such as Garmin, Polar, Suunto and Fitbit, some of whom have been bringing high-quality sports watches to the market for decades.

The most important functions of modern sports watches and smartwatches

My sports watch is my daily companion that I use during my numerous workouts. The sporty smartwatch is used even more than my smartphone. That's why I always use a very current model that meets the latest technical standards. What functions should modern fitness watches and sporty smartwatches have? Below I have put together a clear table for you that lists the most important features of current sports watches.

Smartwatch attributesTechnology used
Main material Sports watches are often made of titanium, stainless steel, carbon or plastic. Titanium is currently state-of-the-art because it is particularly light and robust.
Cover glass materialMineral glass is often used in cheaper smartwatches, while more durable materials such as sapphire glass or Corning® Gorilla® Glass are often used in more expensive models. Sapphire glass is particularly scratch-resistant and is often used in high-priced watches.
Bezel material The bezel of the smartwatch, i.e. the frame around the display, is an important design element and at the same time offers functionality. It is usually made of materials such as stainless steel, titanium or aluminum, depending on the housing material chosen for the smartwatch. Some models also offer ceramic or carbon fiber bezels.
Bracelet materialDepending on the model and features, smartwatch bands can be made of various materials, including leather, metal, rubber, and synthetic fibers such as nylon. Some manufacturers also offer special wristbands that are designed for specific activities such as sports or swimming and have special properties such as sweat or water resistance.
DisplayThe display of a smartwatch plays an important role as it represents the interface between the user and the watch. Most smartwatches today have a high-resolution display. AMOLED or miniLED displays are often used here, which offer high resolution and color quality. AMOLED displays are characterized by color brilliance and high contrast.
TouchscreenMost current sports watches and sports smartwatches rely on a reliable touchscreen that enables intuitive and quick operation. Many manufacturers have optimized their touchscreens specifically for use during sports to ensure smooth operation even when sweating or raining.
Color variants of the smartwatchModern sports smartwatches and sports watches are not only functional and powerful, but also stylish and available in many colors. The color selection ranges from simple and elegant colors such as white and black to trendy and eye-catching color combinations such as rose gold and white or silver and dark gray.
Clock functionsToday's sports watches have the typical watch functions such as time, automatic summer time change, alarm, timer, stopwatch, sunrise/sunset. In addition to the basic watch functions, many current sports watches offer other practical functions that are particularly useful for sporting activities. These include GPS tracking, heart rate measurement, calorie consumption, pedometer and distance measurement.
Fitness trackingFitness tracking is one of the main features of sports smartwatches. Current models offer a variety of functions to monitor the health and fitness of the wearer. These include, for example, measuring energy levels, oxygen saturation and stress levels as well as recording heart rate, ECG, breathing rate and sleep analysis.
Activity featuresActivity tracking with pedometer, calorie consumption, floors, distance covered and intensity minutes is now an absolute standard for all sports smartwatches. These functions are now standard on most sports smartwatches. A pedometer is a fundamental part of activity tracking and records the number of steps taken during the day.
Main areas of smartwatch use The range of sports smartwatches is diverse and tailored to the needs of different athletes. Most smartwatches offer a wide range of sports, from running and walking, hiking, golf and cycling to skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, stand-up paddling, surfing, sailing, rowing and swimming.
Indoor tracking functionsIndoor training has become an important part of daily fitness and many sports smartwatches have recognized this. They offer comprehensive tracking features for workouts such as strength training, cardio, cross-training, stepping, stair climbing, rowing, yoga, Pilates and breathing exercises. Users can also follow training animations directly on the watch to improve their technique and movements.
outdoor featuresMost current sports smartwatches also offer a variety of outdoor functions that can be particularly useful for outdoor sports such as hiking, mountaineering or camping. These include functions such as navigation with the reverse function, in which the smartwatch automatically determines the return route and shows the wearer the return route.
Heart rate measurement on the wristOptical heart sensors use light to detect changes in blood flow through the skin and measure the heartbeat. Electric heart sensors, on the other hand, use electrodes to measure the heart's electrical signals and create an ECG.
Pulse oximeterA pulse oximeter is now standard equipment on many modern smartwatches and sports watches. This function measures oxygen saturation in the blood, which is an important indicator of physical fitness and health. For example, by measuring oxygen levels in the blood, the smartwatch can show signs of sleep apnea or other breathing problems.
water resistanceMost current smartwatches offer a water resistance of 5 or 10 ATM and are therefore suitable for swimming, snorkeling, showering and washing your hands. They are therefore not suitable for diving. With some models like that Apple Watch Ultra or some models from Suunto and Garmin can even be scuba diving to 40 meters.
Battery LifeThe battery life of a sports smartwatch depends on various factors such as usage intensity, model type and activated functions. In general, smartwatches consume more power than special sports watches. A good sports smartwatch should last at least a whole day with intensive use, i.e. around 18 hours.
Position trackingMany sports smartwatches today use GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO to precisely determine the wearer's position. GPS is the best known and most widely used standard. GLONASS is the Russian counterpart to GPS and GALILEO is the European satellite navigation system.
SensorsTypical smartwatch sensors integrated into current sports watch models include an optical heart rate sensor, an electrical heart rate sensor, a pulse oximeter, a barometric altimeter, a compass, a gyroscope, an accelerometer, a pulse oximeter, and GPS.
SmartWatch featuresSports watches and sports smartwatches usually have typical smartwatch functions such as telephony, notifications, SMS reply, calendar, weather, music functions, phone search and payment functions. There are some sports watches and sports smartwatches that offer additional special functions in addition to the typical smartwatch functions.
CompatibilityThere are essentially two different streams of smartwatches on the market. The first group includes the Apple Watch, previously only with the Apple iPhone compatible. The second group includes smartwatches running the Google Wear OS operating system, which are compatible with both Android and iOS devices.
ConnectionsMost current sports watches and sports smartwatches connect to the smartphone via Bluetooth® to synchronize data and display notifications. ANT+® is another wireless transmission standard used by some sports watches and fitness trackers to communicate with external sensors such as heart rate monitors or bicycle speed sensors.
WeightA sports watch or smartwatch usually weighs between 30 and 60 grams. However, there are also models that are slightly heavier or lighter depending on size, material and functions.

The features and capabilities of wearables become more sophisticated, sophisticated, and intelligent with each development stage of smartwatches. Even today, smart watches are crammed with processors and sensors to gather as much information as possible, to get the most accurate picture possible of the user and to support the user as well as possible in health issues and all other life situations. Especially in sports wearables can be very useful by recording the activities, as the user can evaluate the sport and draw conclusions about his fitness from it.

Also important for holidaymakers, outdoor athletes and active people

Wearables and smartwatches are also incredibly useful for active people on active vacations, adventure vacations and other trips. Current models not only offer up-to-date maps for navigation and enable travelers to navigate directly on their wrist. They also offer athletes, active vacationers and adventurers the opportunity to protect themselves in emergency situations. Some models detect falls and can then make an emergency call. In addition, some current wearables continuously monitor the heart rate and can thus detect dangerous atrial fibrillation of the heart and warn the wearer of the watch.

Wearables are therefore essential today, especially as health gadgets. For this reason, the devices have become an essential part of travel equipment as holiday gadgets. You can provide an additional level of security, especially in foreign countries in unknown regions.

Wearables – the future on your wrist with smartwatches and fitness watches?

My conclusion

While smartphones have already reached their peak and the market is largely saturated, wearables such as smartwatches, sports watches, fitness watches and outdoor watches still have a glorious future. The products get better with every generation, get new functions and become even more useful. Especially when traveling and vacationing, these vacation gadgets can provide a lot of support in foreign countries and unknown travel destinations - and thus make the trip even more pleasant.

In addition to their properties on vacation, the gadgets can be particularly useful when it comes to health issues. Although wearables do not replace a visit to the doctor, by recording vital functions they tend to provide important assistance to the wearer in maintaining and improving their health. In the future, smartwatches should also be able to measure blood sugar. So we can't wait to see what functions the smart watches will offer next. And of course also whether there will be more wearables such as data glasses that will provide users with even better support in all situations.
