Watch feels massive on the wrist

The sports watch feels really solid on the wrist. The 1,7 centimeter thickness and 79 grams weight are immediately noticeable. The plastic bracelet appears solid and tear-resistant. We notice: You have to make it very tight so that the fitness watch doesn't slip or move. The sapphire crystal immediately shines at us.

Below there is a touchscreen color display that can be adjusted to several brightness levels. Operation is immediately intuitive. The function menu can be easily operated using the three buttons on the right side. What is striking is that there are so many setting options that you first have to get an overview.

Suunto app a positive surprise

At the same time I downloaded the Suunto app, which also makes a very good impression. After a few seconds the watch is already connected. In order to make optimal use of the outdoor watch, you have to create a profile with the manufacturer, where you also provide some data such as height, weight and age - a typical process for fitness products.

Once the sports watch is connected to the app, it synchronizes regularly and reliably with the smartphone used - in our case an iPhone with the iOS operating system. Unfortunately, we can't say anything about how it works on Android.

Suunto 9 Baro had to be connected to Mac

However, I noticed one thing here: During the Suunto Baro 9 test, I simply assumed that the sports watch could also carry out a firmware update directly via the smartphone. However, this is not the case. You have to connect the Suunto Baro 9 directly to a PC or Mac in order to install the software update using the associated Suunto desktop app.

The connection then runs via the included charging cable, which has a conventional USB plug on one side (not yet USB-C) and on the other side a connection specially designed by Suunto that couples magnetically with the sports watch. Once you have downloaded the app on your computer and established the connection, firmware updates can be easily installed.

Suunto Baro 9 is a rock-solid sports watch

In general, Suunto makes a very developed and reliable impression with the Suunto Baro 9 sports watch and also with the iOS smartphone app. The app doesn't crash and didn't have any other noticeable teething problems - it simply works excellently in conjunction with the outdoor watch.

When it comes to the infrastructure of sports watch hardware and software, Suunto has created a successful and reliable construct that completely convinced us. The technology works as it should. Since it is not a given that everything works so smoothly even with many established premium manufacturers of travel equipment and travel gadgets, this is quite remarkable.

Compared to various smartwatches, the battery of the Suunto 9 Baro really lasts forever. The sports watch proved to be a solid companion in everyday life and for all sports. With a water resistance of 100 meters, you can easily go swimming, snorkeling and do all kinds of sports on and in the water with the outdoor watch.

The clock is very large. Five centimeters in diameter and 1,7 centimeters thick. This definitely ensures that the watch stands out. Discreet is something different. This has both advantages and disadvantages. The sports watch looks very high quality due to its weight. At the same time, they are very noticeable on the wrist - which also applies to many other fitness watches. The watch's setting options are so diverse that it can be overwhelming for some users at first. You first have to familiarize yourself with the device and find the most important functions for your needs. We also think that the selection of watch faces could be more extensive and in some cases more information could be displayed.
