Where is it warm in winter? The best destinations for the perfect winter holiday in the sun

In winter, everyone who is looking for the perfect winter holiday is of course spoiled for choice: either you look for a sunny destination in the warmth and travel to where it is nice and warm and the sun shines in the European winter - or you choose the traditional winter holiday with mountains, snow and skiing. Of course, both variants have their own charm. However, what appeals to us most is taking a nice sunbath even in winter, diving on exotic coral reefs or taking a ride on the stand up paddling board.

Many people want to travel in winter especially because they want to escape the harsh winter, the cold and the snow in Germany and want to avoid the short, dark winter days, at least for a certain time. The desire to bring summer back for a few days drives us to the airport and into the wide world. Because in many places the weather is good even when it is really cold, dark and lousy in Central Europe. However, you have to travel a few miles by air to reach a place where the weather in winter is significantly better than here. Where is it warm in winter?

Winter holidays in the sun – you’ll find what you’re looking for at these travel destinations

Of course, we recommend the destinations that are closer to the equator and the even more distant destinations that are in the southern hemisphere of our planet, where, as we know, our winter is summer. The best destinations for the winter include the Canary Islands with Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and the other islands of the archipelago. It is not for nothing that the Canary Islands are called the islands of eternal spring. Located a little deeper in the Atlantic, Madeira and the Azores attract those seeking warmth.

At the other end of the Mediterranean, Egypt is preparing for increasing visitor numbers again after many airlines are expanding their flight quotas again. In addition, the destinations in the Caribbean are of course at the top of the hit list: Florida in the USA, Cuba, Costa Rica and the many other Caribbean islands are the first choice when it comes to a dream vacation in winter. They are also only a relaxed eight to ten hour flight away. In the Maldives and Seychelles, winter is high season because this is the dry season where the weather is particularly pleasantly warm and sunny.

From there it is not far to Southeast Asia, where in many places it is also the dry season in our winter: For example, Thailand, Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia and Indonesia are worth a trip all winter long. While it is cold and freezing here, it is midsummer in Australia, South Africa and South America. On the one hand, there are so many great sun destinations in winter that those interested are spoiled for choice. On the other hand, there is also the right travel destination for every taste.

1. Canary Islands: The islands of eternal spring are warm in winter

The Canary Islands are among the few destinations that are only five hours flight from central Europe and still offer pleasant temperatures over 20 ° degrees in the deepest winter. Not for nothing are the Canaries referred to as the islands of eternal spring. Even the water temperature is still around the 20 degrees Celsius. If you do not want to fly so far away and still want to have warm temperatures, the Canary Islands are just right for you. With 300 sunny days a year, the islands are just the right destination for sun-seekers who want to spend their winter holidays in the sun.

Fuerteventura, for example, boasts wonderful sandy beaches and is particularly suitable for surfers who want to jump into the waves even in winter. That's why Fuerteventura is particularly popular in winter. But the other islands are also very trendy in winter: Gran Canaria, for example, can also boast peak daily temperatures of 18 to 26 degrees Celsius and offers warm and dry days, especially on the southern half of the island. Puerto de Mogan with the beautiful little harbor and the great Mogan Cordial Playa Resort are the perfect starting point on Gran Canaria for all other tours.

Gran Canaria in winter is designed for activity, especially for water sports enthusiasts, and offers many opportunities to let off steam. It is not for nothing that Gran Canaria is called a continent in miniature. On Lanzarote, you can also enjoy the volcanic landscape in winter and lie in the sun on the world-famous Papagayo beaches. The island is also good for culture lovers, who can visit the art exhibitions of the famous artist Cesar Manrique all over the island in peace in winter. All in all, the Canary Islands offer beautiful landscapes, even in winter, and many opportunities to spend a varied and active winter holiday - regardless of whether you want to go diving, stand-up paddling, jogging or hiking.

2. Maldives: Winter is the best time to visit the kingdom of the islands

If you don't want to miss out on a luxury holiday in winter, the Maldives is the perfect place for you. The Maldives have their dry season in the European winter and shine with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius and little precipitation, while it snows at home. If you are looking for a holiday with crystal clear water, fine sandy beaches and lots of palm trees, the Maldives is the perfect place for you. The big advantage of a Maldives holiday in winter: you really get out there!

Anyone who starts in Germany at zero degrees Celsius and lands in Malé at 30 degrees and then takes a seaplane to one of the small islands in the atolls has created the greatest possible contrast to cold Germany - ideal for those seeking peace and quiet and wellness fans. A feel-good winter holiday is guaranteed in the Maldives, as many of the small resort islands are very luxurious, offer excellent food and exclusive accommodation such as bungalows right on the beach where you can really unwind, such as on the dream islands of Coco Bodu Hithi or Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu.

The Maldives are also an excellent winter destination for water sports enthusiasts: stand-up paddling, surfing and sailing are possible on many resort islands. Diving is of course by far the most popular water sport in the Maldives, as the underwater world in the Maldives is one of the most beautiful in the world: divers can discover manta rays, whale sharks, turtles and many other sea creatures. If you like something a little more luxurious, the Maldives is the right place for you in winter!

3. Egypt: Travel is close in winter, warm and very sunny

Egypt has been increasingly back on German holidaymakers' wish lists for a few weeks now. After turbulent times, the country on the Nile is back in the tourism business. Airlines are offering flights to Egypt again and holidaymakers are returning to the Red Sea. Egypt is of course the first choice, especially in winter: with temperatures during the day around 25 degrees Celsius and pleasant water temperatures beyond the 20 degree mark, the destination, like the Canary Islands, is not hot, but at least at a comfortable temperature. The strong wind on the Red Sea is a bit annoying in winter, but that can also be overcome.

Egypt in winter is a great destination for all water sports enthusiasts: kite surfers enjoy the wind blowing from the east from Saudi Arabia over the Red Sea. Stand up paddlers can look forward to pleasant temperatures and divers love the Red Sea anyway. In the holiday resorts of Sharm El Sheik (travel report), Makadi Bay (travel report), Safaga (travel report) and Marsa Alam (travel report) you can experience a real summer feeling even in winter.

Hardly any destination for divers is so close and at the same time so diverse: The Red Sea offers almost the species diversity of a tropical sea with whale sharks, sharks, dolphins and turtles and is only a five-hour flight away. It's similar to the Canary Islands with Egypt: you only have to get on a plane for a few hours to get to a warm holiday destination. Egypt in winter is currently still an insider tip, but if the situation remains stable, many tourists will soon flock to the land of the pharaohs again.

4. Thailand sunny and warm in winter: The best time to travel is from December to the end of March

The best time to travel to Thailand is exactly when it is deep winter in Europe. The main season slowly begins in Thailand from mid-December. There's really something going on in Thailand over Christmas and New Year's Eve: Western tourists from Europe and the USA are traveling in Southeast Asia and preferably in Thailand. The rainy season is finally over in January, and the country between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand boasts beautiful sunshine and temperatures well above 30 degrees.

On the one hand there are an incredible number of holidaymakers on Koh Samui, on the other hand there are also many great, often upscale hotels and resorts. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Thailand offers dream beaches in many places, such as in Khao Lak, on the holiday island of Phuket or on the well-known and popular destinations Koh Samui (travel report) and Koh Phangan (travel report). You can also endure it really well in the south of Thailand on the small island of Koh Lipe (travel report). Thailand in winter is simply fun: the water on the dream beaches is wonderful and crystal clear and water sports enthusiasts can fully devote themselves to their hobbies: regardless of whether you like jet skiing, stand up paddling or surfing, especially on the island of Phuket there is a huge offer for water sports enthusiasts.

Diving is of course also very much on the agenda in Thailand: However, you are better off in the Andaman Sea, as the best diving spots are there on the Similan Islands. Diving on Koh Phangan is highly recommended and there is also a lot to discover while diving on Koh Lipe. If you want to combine lots of fun and relaxation in winter with sun and warmth, you should book your winter holiday in Thailand.

5. Florida (USA): tropical travel destination with lots of sun in winter

Actually, they are USA a typical summer destination, which many holidaymakers from Europe travel to especially in the summer months. Mostly, to look at several places in the United States. Due to the geographic location of the US, this is not such a bad idea: The country is as varied as it can be - for a summery winter holiday is such a tour but rather not suitable. In winter, so-called blizzards can bring coldness down to Texas and so there is a similar winter climate in many regions of the US as we do - although the United States as a whole are in a more southern latitude than we in Central Europe.

So, on the whole, the USA is not a travel destination for anyone who wants to escape the winter in Europe. But as is often the case, there is of course an exception: If you want to spend your winter holiday in the sun in the USA, you should take a closer look at Florida. The southern state has a subtropical and tropical climate and, with Key West, even has the southernmost point in the USA. In winter the temperatures in Florida are a pleasant 30 degrees Celsius and the sun is often visible. After the end of the hurricane season, the weather in Florida is clearing up again and winter vacationers can spend a wonderful vacation in the sun in Florida from Christmas through January to February.

A trip like this is of course very varied: you can see the metropolis of Miami with its beautiful beaches and extensive nightlife. You can go to the Florida Keys, where the best diving spots for scuba divers are located, or you can go to the Gulf of Mexico, where the most beautiful beaches in Florida are located. In any case, a winter vacation in Florida is a real treat. Wings don't have to be expensive either: you can fly to Florida from Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf for just 480 euros. Enjoy your winter vacation in the land of unlimited possibilities!

Watch out for the best time to travel

I always keep the best time to travel to my favorite travel destinations in mind - because when planning your trip it is incredibly important to know when and where is the best place to go on holiday. This basically applies to all travel destinations and types of travel. You don't want to go on a skiing holiday in the middle of summer and you don't want to fly to Egypt in the middle of summer when it's 50 degrees Celsius. Nor would we want to be in Thailand or the Maldives during the rainy season.

Warm travel destinations in winter – many suitable destinations worldwide

My conclusion

These were just a few suggestions for your winter holiday in the sun. A single central question drives us: where is it warm and sunny in winter? There are so many goals that it's hard to list here. Our next winter trip will take us to Florida because we have not been there yet. Last year we were in Thailand and in the Maldives.

And so we can only say from our own experience: a winter holiday in the sun is really good for body and soul! Leaving the cold and dark winter in Europe behind and soaking up the sun feels really good. If you return well-rested from your winter trip, the rest of the winter won't be that long and spring in Europe will come sooner or later. There are enough reasons for a winter holiday in the sun - winter, with its cold and darkness, is just the best of them.
