Overview - advantages of a summer holiday at the Baltic Sea
- The Baltic Sea is a nearby and easily accessible travel destination in Germany that can be easily reached by car or train.
- The holiday resorts along the coast offer an excellent tourist infrastructure and are therefore ideal for families, couples, those seeking peace and quiet and active holidaymakers.
- There are numerous leisure activities such as cycling, jogging, walking and many other activities on and in the water that will make your holiday unforgettable.
- The Baltic Sea is a wonderful place for swimming, stand up paddling and even diving and snorkeling.
Summer is a busy time
The Bay of Lübeck is developing more and more into a year-round destination, where holidaymakers also come spring, autumn and winter are coming. However, the big rush still takes place in summer and preferably during the summer holidays. Things really get going from mid-June, when the holidays begin in some federal states. Then it feels like half of Germany spends its vacation on the coast.
You have to say: it is incredibly full. But it is not yet as completely overcrowded as in many places on the Mediterranean - for example Italy, Croatia and Majorca. While you can generally spend a wonderful, relaxing beach holiday in Scharbeutz in the summer, the tourist development also has its downsides:
Some days it's so crowded on the beach that you can't even set foot on the ground. The bathers lie completely close together. Parking spaces are a rare commodity in summer and prices also rise sharply in many places during the high season. In addition, the fine white sand beach increasingly turns into a garbage dump over the course of the summer and last summer there were toxic algae and dangerous fire jellyfish floating in the water. So should you spend your vacation on the Mediterranean instead of in Scharbeutz? Hardly, because a trip to the Baltic Sea still has enough unbeatable advantages.
My experiences with Scharbeutz
I think you can already tell that I had very positive experiences in Scharbeutz and would like to share them with you in my travel report. That is also the case. I've known the place since my childhood, when we vacationed here with mom, dad, grandma and grandpa. Later I lived in this beautiful place by the sea for a few years.
And I had to watch how the small holiday resort has changed rapidly. Often for the better, but not only. And from this perspective I wrote this Scharbeutz travel report - as a small declaration of love for the place where I lived for a long time, but not entirely uncritical.

Beach lovers and families – who is a holiday in Scharbeutz suitable for?
Scharbeutz has a lot to offer, especially for families and friends of beach vacations, as will certainly emerge in my Scharbeutz travel report. There is a large contingent of relatively inexpensive holiday homes and apartments that are ideal for families. If you don't want to cook yourself on vacation, you of course have the opportunity to eat out in numerous restaurants or choose from a wide range of high-quality hotels that offer breakfast, half board or full board.
Accommodations are often perfectly located
Most of the accommodations are ideally located and are particularly suitable for small children, families, pensioners and people with physical limitations. The distance to the beach is short and the supply of food thanks to the numerous supermarkets, restaurants and snack bars is ideal, especially for families with small children. It's a similar situation for beach fans who still enjoy a lot of freedom in the Bay of Lübeck if they want to take loungers, beach toys or water sports equipment such as surfboards or SUP boards with them to the beach.

The Bay of Lübeck offers predominantly white, fine sandy beaches and often crystal-clear, gently sloping water - ideal for children and older people. 2. Jogging, hiking and beach walks around Scharbeutz
If the weather doesn't cooperate, endless walks on the beach in the Bay of Lübeck are ideal. The route from Sierksdorf to Niendorf/Baltic Sea is around 20 kilometers long. Perfect for long jogging, hiking or walking tours. The forest paths around Scharbeutz, which lead past smaller lakes and through neighboring villages, are also ideal for this.

Pony riding is a classic in Scharbeutz, particularly popular with children. Adults can rent a horse and tour the surrounding area on field and bridle paths. In winter you can even take your horse to the beach.
7. Visit to Karl's adventure village Warnsdorf
Karl's adventure village in Warnsdorf is a popular excursion destination all year round. Children especially love the huge indoor playground, rides and delicious food. Despite the not exactly cheap prices, this attraction is one of the best leisure activities near Scharbeutz.
8. On rainy days in the Ostseetherme Scharbeutz
The Ostseetherme Scharbeutz is not only a highlight on rainy and cold days. With spacious swimming pools and a huge sauna area, it is ideal for a family visit. The water slides are particularly a highlight.
9. Shopping and sightseeing in Lübeck
The Hanseatic city of Lübeck is a lively university town with a historic city center, numerous shops and excellent restaurants. A day in Lübeck is ideal when staying in Scharbeutz.
10. Excursion to the island Fehmarn
A trip to Fehmarn is a must on a holiday in the Bay of Lübeck. The island is one of Germany's sunniest regions and is a wonderful destination for a day trip.
11. Eat fish sandwiches in Travemünde
In Travemünde you can enjoy freshly caught fish and watch the large ships. A day trip by ferry to Scandinavia is also an exciting option.

Tips for restaurants in Scharbeutz – eat well with a sea view?
The restaurants in Scharbeutz are quite solid, but unfortunately often not anymore. Most of the time you will find either expensive and good places or expensive and bad ones, while good and cheap offers are rare. An outstanding restaurant that really impressed me is completely missing in Scharbeutz. If I really want to eat well, I go to Lübeck (no joke).
There are numerous excellent and sometimes unusual restaurants there that are varied, offer high quality and are usually quite inexpensive. Of course, this is a question of taste and my personal, subjective assessment, which is, however, shared by many people I know. Nevertheless, you don't have to go hungry in Scharbeutz. There are plenty of opportunities to eat something delicious there too.
1. Erdmann's Kleines Steakhaus - Delicious steaks and scenic views
As the name suggests, you can get delicious steaks at Erdmann’s Kleines Steakhaus. The restaurant is located directly on the Scharbeutz promenade and even has a small branch directly on the dunes. For meat lovers who want to enjoy the view at the same time, Erdmann’s Kleines Steakhaus is just right. The prices are moderate.
2. Lagoon Fish Restaurant – Culinary fish delicacies right by the sea
Right next to the steakhouse is the Lagune fish restaurant. I'm not sure if it's part of the steakhouse, but they share seating on the dunes. The Lagune fish restaurant offers really delicious fish specialties in the mid-price segment. The freshly caught Baltic Sea plaice there was excellent. A highly recommended restaurant for many occasions.
3. Ristorante Salentino - Highlight for all lovers of Italian cuisine
The traditional Italian Ristorante Salentino in the center of Scharbeutz has been around for decades. After a friendly welcome from the boss himself, you will receive delicious pizza, pasta and other Italian delicacies. Despite the exposed location, the prices are moderate and invite you to linger with a glass of wine.
4. Toni's Essbar - enjoy Mediterranean cuisine
Toni’s Essbar is also delicious and cozy. The restaurant is located at the intersection diagonally opposite the savings bank and the pharmacy in the middle of town. The selection of main courses is large and the prices are relaxed. In Toni’s Essbar you can spend a cozy evening and eat delicious Mediterranean food. I've been there several times and always satisfied.
5. Ristorante Rosario – a real eye-catcher in the dunes
Ristorante Rosario is located directly on the dunes and offers a wonderful view of the beach. The Italian restaurant is also ideal during the day for a delicious lunch or coffee and cake.
6. Mr. Van – delicious Asian food right on the beach
Mr. Van offers typical Asian cuisine at moderate prices. As the only Asian in Scharbeutz, he is ideal for anyone who doesn't want to go without Asian dishes (I can't go without them for more than two days). The portions are quite large and overall very tasty. I recommend eating locally and ordering the duck on the hot plate.
7. Doner kebab shop on the beach - enjoy cheap kebab, lahmacun and falafel
The kebab snack bar in Scharbeutz is located on Strandallee next to the casino. It is a small restaurant with outdoor seating that offers typical Turkish specialties. The meals are prepared with a lot of love by the owner, are very rich and absolutely inexpensive. Doner kebab is always good - so you should definitely pay a visit to the kebab snack bar in Scharbeutz.
8. Sierksdorfer Hof - located directly on the beach promenade of Sierksdorf
This hotel and restaurant is not located in Scharbeutz, but I tested it and found it to be good to very good. The Sierksdorfer Hof is located directly on the beach in Sierksdorf and offers typical German cuisine with fish and meat dishes. You can sit comfortably inside or outside on the terrace, drink your after-work beer and eat really well. The prices are solid. The Sierksdorfer Hof is definitely a restaurant that I can recommend.
9. More restaurants in Scharbeutz
In addition to those mentioned, there are many other restaurants in Scharbeutz. Some I haven't tested yet or wasn't that happy with. In my opinion, the price-performance ratio at Café Important and Gosch is not right. I haven't tried Herzberg's restaurant yet. I've heard a lot of good things about the Pfannkuchenhaus and the Wennhof, but I haven't eaten there myself. I will also test these restaurants one by one and let you know what impression I got there.

Diverse accommodation in Scharbeutz - from inexpensive to luxurious retreats
The selection of holiday apartments and hotels in Scharbeutz is very large. You really have the opportunity to find the right residence for your summer vacation, from fairly cheap to solid to luxurious and expensive accommodation.
Since the rush to Scharbeutz is so great, you should look for and book your accommodation in good time, as there are often not many rooms left at short notice, especially at peak times in midsummer. Here is an overview of hotels in Scharbeutz that I can recommend from my own experience or that I have heard good things about.
1. Hotel and restaurant Wennhof
The Hotel and Restaurant Wennhof is a real authority in Scharbeutz. The traditional house near the Bürgeramt is a very well-rated house where you can wonderfully spend your summer holiday in Scharbeutz. Great importance is also placed on the physical well-being of the guests. The only disadvantage is the relatively long walk to the beach. But if you accept that, you will find one of the best hotels in Scharbeutz here.

2. Bayside Hotel Scharbeutz
The Bayside Hotel in Scharbeutz, which is located directly on the pier, offers a high standard, very good food and an extensive wellness area with sauna, pools and massage. You have direct access to the beach from the hotel or you can relax at the rooftop bar. The Bayside Hotel is often fully booked well in advance, so be sure to secure your room well in advance.

3. Petersen's country house
Petersen’s Landhaus is a very well-kept accommodation that is located approximately at the level of the Sparkasse. You can sleep well in the spacious rooms and also get a delicious breakfast. There are parking spaces directly at the house. From here it's about a five to ten minute walk to the beach.

4. Apartments and Apartments
There are countless holiday homes and apartments in Scharbeutz that you can book via various websites on the Internet or directly on site with real estate agents. The quality depends entirely on the owner. Many accommodations are modern, others appear outdated. In order to find the right apartment and a nice holiday apartment, you should look at pictures in advance and read reviews from other guests.

The dark side of a Scharbeutz holiday - challenges and solutions
Where there is light, there is also shadow. Scharbeutz also has its dark sides and disadvantages that you might notice on your summer vacation. It is very crowded, especially during the big summer holidays. On sunny days on the beach it is crowded, parking spaces are fought over and most of them are chargeable and expensive. Although a new large parking lot is being built, the infrastructure does not seem to be able to cope with the influx of tourists. There is an entrance fee for beach access between May 15th and September 15th, which means an additional cost for families.
Although there are some free stretches of beach, they are poorly signposted and remote. This is particularly suboptimal for families with small children and a small budget. In addition, some vacationers behave in an impossible way.
Parents let their children defecate in the middle of the road, even though the toilet is only a few meters away, and adults defecate in the dunes. At the end of summer the beach often looks like an ashtray, with cigarette butts and trash lying everywhere. If you are vacationing in Scharbeutz this summer, please do your part to protect the environment.
Scharbeutz insider tips - what else is there to discover?
Finally, here are my personal Scharbeutz insider tips that can make your vacation even better:
- Visit the free beach in Sierksdorf – in my opinion the most beautiful beach in the Bay of Lübeck.
- Discover Hemmelsdorfer See - the refuge is a nature reserve, ideal for swimming and relaxing.
- The small harbor of Niendorf/Baltic Sea is an attraction, and you can also buy very good freshly caught fish here or eat it directly on site.
- A little in the hinterland of Scharbeutz is Pönitz with the two Pönitzer lakes - ideal for hiking, cycling or jogging.
