Travel report Sardinia – tips & experiences on the diverse island

by

Natural, authentic and full of surprises: Sardinia is probably one of the most varied travel destinations in the Mediterranean - an entire continent on a relatively large island - perfect for adventurers, sportsmen and beach holidaymakers. Travelers will find everything here that makes for an unforgettable vacation. We took a closer look at the island with the rental car. What is there to discover and what is the Sardinian way of life? In our Sardinia travel report with valuable tips and experiences we present the second largest Mediterranean island.

Table of Contents show

In Sardinia, the air smells mildly spicy of the Mediterranean in early summer and the sun sparkles on the crystal clear water of the breathtakingly beautiful bays. This is my first impression of the Italian island. The midday sun is burning brightly and we are quickly certain:

The Vacation in May The timing is perfect at the start of the season, before the beaches and streets get really crowded. Not too hot, not too cold, not too crowded and not too stressful – we chose the perfect time to explore the huge Mediterranean island. And what we found more than surprised me.

Make kilometers with your rental car

We rented a car from a regional rental company because you can do a lot of mileage in Sardinia. From Olbia in the north down to Cagliari in the very south it is over 200 kilometers. In the interior of the island it is easy to feel like you are on the mainland. We are initially quite impressed by the third largest Mediterranean island, which is located in the immediate vicinity of Corsica and Sicily - and east of the Balearic Islands. A certain landscape similarity Majorca is therefore undeniable.

Our home in the north of the island

Our vacation spot is San Teodoro in the northeast of the island. To be honest, we chose the destination based on luck because Sardinia has so many beautiful corners - and lo and behold, in retrospect I can say: we hit the jackpot. The name San Teodoro already sounds like a holiday - and quite coincidentally, one of the island's most impressive beaches, La Cinta, is in the immediate vicinity.

Our first impression is therefore clear: we are immediately very impressed by Sardinia. But to be honest, that was just the beginning. In our Sardinia travel report we introduce you to the enchanting island in more detail.

Our personal experiences in Sardinia

Authentic, natural, relaxed

Our first impression of the large, Mediterranean island should also be our last. The Sardinia experience we had during our ten days of vacation was truly exceptional and enriching. But above all, it showed us stressed-out northern Europeans once again the good life and the relaxed way of life on the Mediterranean, which is more than healing with food, leisure and relaxation.

San Teodoro the perfect holiday resort in Sardinia?

Our small and cozy holiday resort of San Teodoro in the north-east of Sardinia welcomed us from the start. After just a few days, the first people greeted us on the street and we were able to immediately feel at home in the well-arranged Mediterranean town with many holiday homes and a few small hotels. Of course we tried out the restaurants one after the other and on the first evening I decided:

Sardinia is natural, authentic and full of surprises! You can spend an entire holiday alone visiting a different dream beach every day.

Sascha Tegtmeyer

We are in Sardinia, there is pizza every day. And so from then on, pizza in all imaginable variations was on my menu every evening. However, my fellow travelers also tried the other delicacies on the menu. With this attitude, I was truly in paradise in and around San Teodoro with its delicious restaurants.

Ten days in Sardinia is far too little

And so we stayed for ten days, doing what we came for: to discover Sardinia, to enjoy the beautiful beaches and to sit together in the evenings with delicious Italian food and wine. Nessuno è profeta nel suo paese – Nobody is a prophet in his homeland. But as a holidaymaker with delicious antipasti and a glass of red wine in Sardinia, that can change very quickly.

Explore Sardinia with a rental car or your own car

An island for adventurers and explorers

Sardinia is an incredibly spacious island. From the very top of the north to the south it is well over 200 kilometers. From west to east it should be around 80 kilometers. In the interior of the island you have the impression of being on the mainland. If you don't just want to stay in your holiday destination and really want to explore Sardinia extensively, we recommend a rental car. The island is wonderful to drive around and discover by car.

Discover Sardinia with a rental car - since the island is very spacious, traveling by car is ideal. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer Travel report Sardinia - tips and experiences
Discover Sardinia with a rental car - since the island is very extensive, driving by car is ideal.

Outside of the main season, you can easily find a parking space at the sights. In Sardinia, an important main artery runs completely from Olbia to Cagliari - the SS131 - which is a kind of four-lane federal highway. It is also part of the 2500 kilometer long European route E25. Otherwise, the roads on the island take some getting used to and can often only be driven at speeds of 30 to 70 kilometers per hour.

So you can really make kilometers with your rental car. And of course there are different routes on which you can discover the island. Of course, you can either get in the car and drive off into the blue if you're lucky. Or make a plan beforehand as to which part of Sardinia you want to discover on which day.

Rental car route 1 – the north

You can discover a lot of exciting destinations in the far north of Sardinia. Depending on where you are staying, your route includes our town of San Teodoro, the large city of Olbia with the airport and, a little further north, Porto Cervo, the holiday resort of the rich and famous with a large marina. At the very top of the north is the town of Palau, where you can cross to la Maddalena, the small and wonderfully beautiful neighboring island of Sardinia.

Further stops in the north: Capo Testa, Cala Grande, Isola Isuledda and the rock formations Capo d’Orso and Roccia dell’Orso. In order to complete the route in one day, you have to accelerate a bit. Otherwise just plan two days.

Rental car route 2 - the west and the interior of the island

On another day tour you can discover the interior of the island, which is largely characterized by small towns, mountains and hills, lakes and many fields and pastures with animals. A rural, Mediterranean landscape awaits you, where you will find peace, relaxation and lots of nature.

In the interior of the island of Sardinia you will find a lot of untouched nature. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The west coast is also exciting: There you will find the town of Bosau, which is definitely worth a visit with its colorful houses, historic streets and the basilica. You will also find many prehistoric sites and waterfalls in the area.

Rental Car Route 3 - The South East

The east south of Olbia is definitely worth its own, longer tour. There you will find many wonderful bays, grottos and the secluded beach of Cala Luna. This rental car route is definitely a beach tour where you can discover all the beautiful bays.

Cala Fuili: the small bay is located south of Cala Gonone and just a short walk from the Grotta del Bue Marino. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
Cala Fuili: the small bay is located south of Cala Gonone and just a short walk from the Grotta del Bue Marino. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

There are also some historic Nuraghe villages on your way. You should definitely visit the towns of Orosei and Cala Gonone. To the south of it lies Cala Luna and various other beautiful bays.

Rental car route 4 - the south

On our Sardinia tour we didn't make it south to the island's capital Cagliari. It's not that bad, so we have a good reason to travel to the island again. In the south are some of the most beautiful beaches and the lively island capital, where there are some sights to discover such as the cathedral. If your vacation is long enough, take a longer tour to the south.

But - if you also have accommodation in the north - you have to leave very early in the morning and return very late in the evening. Because on the route, which is over 200 kilometers long, you can drive at a maximum speed of 90 km/h - and you definitely have the feeling that you can't really move from one spot.

The most beautiful beaches in Sardinia

Beach has the euphonious name Spiaggia in Italian. And some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean are definitely in Sardinia. It is not without reason that the island is also referred to as "the Caribbean of Europe". Basically, as a summer holidaymaker, this presents you with two major challenges: On the one hand, Sardinia is a huge island and the dream beaches are distributed relatively evenly all around.

It is not without reason that the island is also referred to as "the Caribbean of Europe". Basically, as a summer holidaymaker, this presents you with two major challenges: On the one hand, Sardinia is a huge island and the dream beaches are distributed relatively evenly all around.

On the other hand, the hotspots are naturally full during the high season. But thanks to the Internet, travel reports and the endless beach rankings, there should no longer be any hidden dream beaches, at least in Sardinia. So be prepared for well-visited beaches, at least in the high season - and fantastic bathing bays with crystal-clear, turquoise water in which you can swim and bathe like in hardly any other place in Europe.

1. Cala Brandinchi - the most beautiful beach in Sardinia?

Our crystal clear favorite in the truest sense of the word is Cala Brandinchi. The bay is probably either the most beautiful beach in Sardinia or at least close to it. I've already traveled around a bit and seen dream beaches in Asia and the Caribbean.

A dip in the Cala Brandinchi is just wonderful! Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Cala Brandinchi is clearly in the top league of the most beautiful beaches in the world, I'm sure of that. If you don't believe it, go there and see for yourself. We spent several days on Brandinchi beach because it was just too beautiful to just stay there for a short time.

2. La Cinta in San Teodoro - the great sickle

La Cinta in San Teodoro is also impressive. The beach is in the shape of a large crescent in front of the town and offers plenty of space to spread out and splash around all day relatively undisturbed.

The beach La Cinta impresses with its dimensions. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Between the beach and the town there is also a nature reserve with a lake and flamingos. When there is an easterly wind it is also a great beach for surfers, SUP fans and kiters. La Cinta in San Teodoro is impressive in its dimensions

3. Capo Coda Cavallo - relatively lonely and natural

The small bay at Capo Coda Cavallo - in the background: the small island of Isola Proratorella, which also has an absolute dream beach to offer, if you go there. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

To reach the small bay at Capo Coda Cavallo near San Teodoro, we first had to crawl through the bushes. But the journey is worth it! A relatively little-visited dream beach awaits you there, at the northeastern end of which is the cape. A perfect place to jump into the water or relax undisturbed.

4. Capo Comino - dream beach with extensive dunes

Capo Camino: a wonderful spot to relax. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer
Capo Camino: a wonderful spot to relax. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The bay at Capo Camino is completely different from the previous beaches. With high sand dunes, small hiding places and a long, impassable coastline, this beach is also very quiet and a great retreat, at least in the low season. Capo Comino is located north of Orosei and south of San Teodoro.

5. Cala Fuili, Grotte del Bue Marino and Cala Luna

The rocks at Cala Fuili are also very popular with climbers. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

At Cala Gonone south of Orosei there are some wonderfully beautiful bays that you should see, like a string of pearls. It starts at the end of the street Cala Fuili, which does not have a nice sandy beach. You can continue along a rocky path to the Grotte del Bue Marino - and if you're really good at walking, you can even make it to Cala Luna. However, it is much more convenient to take the boat shuttle to Cala Luna.

Fantastic beaches, bays and caves in Sardinia

A list

Of course, in the few days on the island we were only able to visit a very select number of beaches and sights. If you are looking for more dream beaches, you can use the following map to find the right beach at your vacation destination.

You can take a relaxed stroll in the small and luxurious harbor town of Porto Cervo and are sure to find one or two small cafés where you can get ice cream and espresso. The expensive ships are moored in the marina, while on land the town has been spruced up with private villas, holiday homes and hotels.

2. Visit of a prehistoric nuraghe village

Sardinia is littered with well-preserved ancient sites that date back to the original Nuragic population. Entire villages have been preserved, as have old altar places and fortifications. You can visit these ancient places everywhere on the island and follow in the footsteps of the early inhabitants of Sardinia. Really exciting and educational!

When you hike along the course of streams, you often come across spectacular waterfalls.

You can visit spectacular waterfalls everywhere in Sardinia. The water often rushes hundreds of meters into the valley and flows into raging mountain rivers. Really a great experience where you can feel all the energy of the water. You can find waterfalls in many places in Sardinia. We were at the spectacular Istrampu de sos Molinos in western Sardinia, which we can only recommend to you.

5. The small town Bosa

Bosa is considered one of the most beautiful places in Sardinia. A historic fort towers over the small town. But the real attraction of Bosa shines from afar: the colorful houses lined up on the slope at the foot of the fort. There are many good restaurants in the center in the pedestrian zone near the basilica. A little outside of town there is also a marina and a small beach. Really a great place. If you feel like it, you can also spend a whole day here.

Surfing, hiking and co - leisure activities in Sardinia

What to do in Sardinia

You can do a variety of activities on your vacation. The island is more diverse than almost any other place in the Mediterranean. The list of activities you can do in Sardinia is correspondingly long. I have to admit: I could have just splashed and swim in the crystal clear water of the bays for the whole ten days.

But then this travel report about Sardinia would have been short. If you are still looking for some inspiration as to what sporting leisure activities you can do on the island, here is a little decision-making aid.

  • bathing and swimming
  • hiking and climbing
  • Stand up paddling, surfing and kite surfing
  • Kayaking
  • Cycling and mountain biking
  • to go jogging

Sardinia travel pictures - impressions of an amazing island

If you are planning a trip to Sardinia or just dreaming about this beautiful island, you will be amazed by my travel photos of Sardinia. With the pictures you can get a first impression of this great holiday destination.

Travel Information Sardinia

Arrival, hotels and accommodation, restaurants

Sardinia is also such a great travel destination because it is so close and at the same time has so much to offer. How do you get there? What about accommodation, restaurants and when is the best time to travel? We present you with an overview of the most important travel facts about Sardinia.

Arrival to Sardinia

I flew from Hamburg to Sardinia via Zurich – the connection to Olbia worked well. Photo: Sascha TegtmeyerTravel report Sardinia - tips and experiences
I flew from Hamburg to Sardinia via Zurich – the connection to Olbia worked well. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

You can get to Sardinia either by plane or by ferry with your own car. There are usually flights to Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero several times a week from the major German airports. However, compared to other large Mediterranean islands, the frequency of flights is significantly lower and the flight prices are relatively high. Most large and well-known airlines as well as some low-cost airlines fly to Sardinia from Germany.

You can get to Sardinia from Genoa by ferry and your own car. It can be worthwhile to travel with your own car, especially from southern Germany, as it is only a few hundred kilometers away.

Hotels and accommodations

We found that San Teodoro in the northeast was the ideal starting point for our tours. In addition, the unique dream beach La Cinta was right on the doorstep. The place is ideal in terms of size and structure - not too big and, above all, equipped with smaller hotels and holiday homes. Everything can be reached quickly and on foot. In the high season it is of course packed here. But overall the place turned out to be a good choice. We stayed there in a small and idyllic hotel that was lovingly run by the owner.

In general, Sardinia is a travel destination where you tend to live in a holiday apartment or holiday home. There are also numerous campsites. Of course, there are also great hotels for everyone who wants a little more comfort. However, the hotel infrastructure is significantly less developed than in the Balearic Islands or the Italian mainland. We think: that's good!

Restaurants

Pizza, pasta and seafood are the first choice in Sardinia. For pizza lovers like me, the island is simply an El Dorado. For six to ten euros you can get a huge pizza in every design imaginable. Every now and then there is a shop that tries burgers or other foreign specialties. Basically, there are pizzerias on every corner, which are often really good and cheap.

We borrowed our rental car from a regional provider based at Olbia Airport. The modern, brand new off-road crossover only cost just under 200 euros for ten days. The insurance was comprehensive – rental and return was uncomplicated and smooth. We can fully recommend it.

Nature, beach, family - for whom is Sardinia suitable as a holiday destination?

Sardinia is incredibly diverse. Accordingly, the island is suitable for many preferences and interests. You can go on an adventure holiday because the island has so much nature to offer, go hiking, plan a holiday to Sardinia as an individual trip or book a package holiday. Extended bike tours or discovery tours with a rental car are conceivable. In addition, due to its dream beaches, the island is of course ideal for beach holidays and bathing holidays.

The travel destination is great for families as well as for solo travelers and couples. Overall, the island is quite cheap and therefore ideal for family holidays and cheap holidays. By the way, the north is ideal for a surfing holiday. As already mentioned, Sardinia calls itself a continent on an island for a reason - there really is something for everyone.

Best travel time Sardinia - typical summer travel destination on the Mediterranean

We were in Sardinia in May – and I am sure that this is also the best time to travel. In May it is nice and warm, but not too hot. And there aren't too many people on the island yet. So the overall package is just right this month.

The best time to travel to Sardinia depends on what you want to do on the island. If you want to enjoy the beautiful beaches and clear water, then the summer months from June to September are ideal. The temperatures are then between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius and there is hardly any rain. However, you also have to expect a lot of tourists and higher prices.

If you prefer to explore the nature and culture of Sardinia, the spring and autumn months from April to May and October to November are more suitable. The temperatures are then more pleasant, between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, and there are fewer crowds.

Travel report Sardinia - learn to enjoy life consciously again

My conclusion

Wow, Sardinia, you have completely convinced us. And after the trip I still ask myself: Why do we keep reading about Mallorca, but hardly anyone talks about the big, beautiful island that is basically right around the corner. Maybe it's because Sardinia isn't particularly designed for mass tourism. Of course there are lots of great ones Hotels on the island, but compared to the major tourist destinations the hotel industry is rather negligible. People more often live in holiday homes and apartments.

Wow, Sardinia, you have convinced us all along the line. And I'm still asking myself after the trip: Why do you keep reading about Mallorca, but hardly anyone talks about the big, beautiful island that's practically right around the corner. Maybe it's because Sardinia isn't quite so geared towards mass tourism. Of course there are many great hotels on the island, but compared to the big tourist destinations, the hotel industry is rather negligible. People live more often in holiday homes and apartments.

And of course, in summer it is extremely crowded, many travelers come by car by ferry. But compared to Mallorca, tourism on the huge island is somewhat slow. In addition, the infrastructure does not exist to cope with a large influx of visitors. The airports are small, there are not that many connections. There are no real motorways in Sardinia, only expressways.

Relaxed, authentic way of life

And that is exactly what makes Sardinia special. The relaxed, the authentic, the easy way of life without being superficial. Pizza and Frutti di Mare, even if it sounds cliché. Dream beaches on every corner. So many beautiful bays that it would take you a whole year to visit them all. In the interior of the island you will find peace and untouched nature. Fields, animals, waterfalls and roads that lead to nowhere.

Playfulness and liveliness

Cities full of architectural playfulness and the liveliness of an Italian piazza. A southern European summer idyll between heat and dryness, the awakening of life in the evening. Drive to Sardinia, if you haven't been there yet, eat pizza and frutti di mare, drink the wine, jump headfirst into this crystal clear sea, consciously enjoy life for a while and maybe discover a new side of yourself. Concordato, va bene?

Our Sardinia trip - flight, hotel, rental car and all utilities on site - were paid by us in full without discounts.

Have you already been to Sardinia or are you planning your first trip to the island? What have you already experienced? Share your experiences in the comments.
