In the meantime, one or the other traveler should also bring their drone with them to take some great aerial photos of the coast on vacation. Drone flying has become a popular hobby in recent years. Many people use the sometimes more, sometimes less small quadcopters to take high-quality aerial photos or just to fly a circuit through the air. Many locals and holidaymakers also use drones in the Bay of Lübeck. Unmanned aerial vehicles can often be seen in the sky, particularly during the holiday season.
Many vacationers are fascinated, even do Photos from the flying machines - others are very annoyed and uncomfortable in the presence of the nimble flyers. Flying a small drone (less than 250 grams take-off weight) is basically allowed in Germany for the time being (as of 2019). But of course it is not allowed to fly everywhere and there are some regulations to be observed. Where can I fly in Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf/Baltic Sea, Haffkrug and Sierksdorf? Am I even allowed to fly a drone around Scharbeutz near the Baltic Sea beach?
Yes and no, because in principle the German allows drone regulation from 2017 and the EU Drone Regulation from 2020 to start with a quadcopter that weighs no more than 250 grams. Heavier aircraft require special requirements in order to be allowed to fly. You have to check exactly which requirements you have to meet in order to be allowed to take off with your drone. Local restrictions must also be observed, which can change at any time. Therefore, before flying, you should definitely ask the municipality or the local police headquarters where you can fly to be on the safe side. Flying a drone on the beach in Lübeck Bay is now hardly possible, as the area is heavily built-up and there are many restrictions.
When I flew there in 2016 and 2017, things looked a little different. Back then, the legislation wasn't that strict. Today you are not allowed to start everywhere - there are some starting points, mostly in the hinterland, where you can climb according to the drone app of the German air traffic control. However, the situation is different in some neighboring communities such as Grömitz. There, for example, drone flying was banned because vacationers were disturbed by the copters.

Where can I fly a drone in Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf/Baltic Sea, Haffkrug and Sierksdorf?
Basically, you should look for a quiet spot if you want to take off with your drone in the area around Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand and other places in the area. You are not allowed to fly in the towns themselves anyway, since you are not allowed to fly over other people's properties. The top priority should be not to disturb or bother anyone. If you want to know an exact location where you can fly your drone, you should take a look at the Droniq app throw or best inform yourself directly at the municipality of Scharbeutz to be on the safe side.
In the Droniq app you can select your drone model and make some settings and then see where you can take off. The drone app shows that you are no longer allowed to fly around most places in the Bay of Lübeck. Especially near the beach there are hardly any places where you can take off.
Of course, there are numerous ways to take off in the hinterland. You can get your aircraft into the air in many places there without disturbing anyone and at the same time take spectacular pictures - with the Baltic Sea in the background. Experience has shown that anyone who climbs to 50 to 100 meters gets a lot of spectacular motifs in the picture. However, there are many nature reserves and other places in the region that are taboo. The Droniq app also provides information on this. Because a flight in the nature reserve is of course also prohibited.
Note and avoid the airport in Haffkrug
As just mentioned, there is a small airfield in Haffkrug, where mostly small single-engine machines take off and land. As with all airports, drones are not allowed to take off in the vicinity. You should therefore make a wide detour around this area. The catchment area of the airport extends to the beach in Haffkrug. Accordingly, you are not allowed to take off from this section of the beach. Basically, you should note that manned aircraft always have priority over drones and, if in doubt, you have to avoid them. On some days of the week, planes and helicopters also fly very low in Scharbeutz and the surrounding area.

Use the Droniq app
The Droniq app gives you a very good overview of where you can basically start with a drone. It was in the app that we saw for the first time that a flight in the Lübeck Bay region can still be allowed. Before that, I assumed that it should actually be completely forbidden. The app gives you pretty detailed information about what you have to consider during a flight and what obstacles are in the area.
Nevertheless, the provider points out that there is no legal certainty with regard to the use of the app - and your drone. However, if someone complains to you that you're jetting around with your drone, you can very well rely on the fact that the Droniq app gave you the green light. This gives the pilot a certain security.

Note current drone laws
It is of paramount importance that all drone pilots are fully aware of and strictly comply with applicable laws and regulations. The German Drone Ordinance and the EU Drone Ordinance are the relevant sets of rules that must be observed for every flight. These regulations have been updated several times in recent years to reflect changing needs and technological developments.
As a responsible drone pilot, you should always inform yourself about the current regulations and make sure that you comply with them in full. The regulations linked above offer a reliable source of information to find out about the exact requirements for drone flights in Germany and the EU. It is important to note that as a pilot you are fully responsible for your flights and you must be aware that you are flying at your own risk.
Drones fly around Scharbeutz, Timmendorfer Strand, Niendorf/Baltic Sea, Haffkrug and Sierksdorf
The municipality of Scharbeutz has not yet issued any general regulations on drone flights. However, the general regulations of the German Drone Ordinance and the EU Drone Ordinance apply. These state that drones weighing less than 250 grams may be flown without any special requirements. Additional regulations apply to heavier drones, which may vary depending on the weight and type of flight. To be on the safe side and to avoid possible trouble, it is advisable to contact the Scharbeutz municipality before the flight and ask about the current regulations. The municipality can provide information on where flying drones is permitted and where there are restrictions. It is important to note that these guidelines are subject to change at any time, so up-to-date information is essential.
When it comes to flying on the coast, this is often difficult due to the dense development in the Bay of Lübeck. Earlier, in 2016 and 2017, the legal regulations were less strict and it was possible to start from the beach in some places. Today, however, there are many restrictions and few designated backcountry launch points. It should be noted that in some neighboring municipalities like Grömitz, flying drones has already been banned due to complaints from holidaymakers. These restrictions were put in place due to nuisance or discomfort from the drones.
It is advisable to also check local restrictions before flying as these may vary depending on timing and events. Contacting the municipality or the local police department is the best way to find out the current regulations and possible flight areas. The use of drones in Scharbeutz and the surrounding areas can therefore be a challenge, as there are many regulations and local restrictions. To be on the safe side and avoid conflicts, it is advisable to find out about the current regulations in advance and to obtain permission from the municipality. So you can enjoy your holiday in Scharbeutz and the Bay of Lübeck and also use the possibilities of drone photography or drone flight.
In conclusion, it can be said that flying with drones around Scharbeutz and the surrounding places is possible, provided that the applicable laws and regulations are observed. A reliable source of information for the current regulations is the municipality itself, which should be checked before you fly. It is important to be respectful of other holidaymakers and residents' privacy, and to accept any restrictions. This is a great way to explore the stunning coastline and countryside from a bird's eye view and create unique memories.

Great article, thank you for your research, have just arrived and later I'll let the drone go up on the beach :-)
Great article. But what does it actually look like at the moment? (2021) I own a Mini 2 and wanted to fly off the beach at sunset in the evening (30M upwards). The Dfs app (now droniq) says almost everywhere that I am not allowed to fly. If I went to the app, I wouldn't be allowed to start anywhere in Timmendorf.
Hey Stefan, unfortunately you're right, you can hardly fly anymore. Unfortunately, I haven't flown at all this year. Apparently, the communities there have closed the beach sections for flying - at least that's what it looks like in the Droniq app. If in doubt, I would ask the municipality again. Otherwise you can also go a bit into the hinterland, there seems to be a lot of possibilities there. According to the app, you can still fly on the Brodten steep bank and get relatively close to the water. I hope you find another place to fly 🙂 Many greetings from Hamburg, Sascha
