Most beautiful beaches on Phuket – Which coast is the best?

by

Thailand is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Phuket, the country's largest island, also has idyllic and almost paradisiacal bays that should definitely be included in your Phuket vacation. A trip to the island is worth it just for the beautiful beaches. Choosing the best beach is of course also a question of individual preference. In my selection there is guaranteed to be a suitable bay for every beach fan. In my experience report I will introduce you to some of the most beautiful spots with many recommendations.

The water is crystal clear, the waves are shallow and I'm sitting on my SUP board and slipping on my diving fins. I anchored the board at the snorkeling spot facing Yanui Beach in the very south of Phuket is upstream. Thousands of colorful fish await me in the water. I love this somewhat remote spot for snorkeling. And after mine SUP tour I come out of the water with a big grin, dry myself off and lie down under a palm tree to watch the sunset.

I like Yanui Beach, although it is as crowded as many other beaches on Thailand's great adventure island of Phuket. But it's not overly loud. The audience is rather relaxed. And even though it's crowded, you can really relax here. By the way, you can see Yanui Beach on the cover photo of this post - because it is my absolute favorite beach on Phuket. And on several trips to Thailand I've always returned here.

Between hustle and bustle and peace

If there's one thing I've learned about Phuket's beaches, it's that they're always kind of crowded in high season. However, you have the choice between a busy beach with hustle and bustle - like you have in Patong or Kata - or a full beach with more peace and quiet. I prefer the latter, but if you're on a party vacation and feel like day drinking, you can of course also lie down on the beach in Patong. Everyone the way he or she likes it.

In times of Instagram and the like, you have to live with the fact that every beautiful place, no matter how remote it is, is overcrowded with visitors. Insider tips are no longer insider tips.

What awaits you on the beaches of Phuket?

  • You will find beautiful beaches all around the island.
  • In my opinion, the most beautiful beaches on the island are in the south.
  • If you're on the beach, be careful of pickpockets.
  • You can relax on the beaches, but you can also enjoy swimming, snorkeling, stand-up paddling and kayaking.
  • No matter whether you are looking for Halligalli or peace and seclusion – there is a beach to suit every taste.

Phuket beaches – map with the most beautiful bays

Below you can see the Phuket Beach Map, on which you can see the most beautiful bays quite clearly. You can also use the map to estimate how big it is Beach is. The rule of thumb is: the larger and longer the beach, the more touristy. However, this applies with one exception: the eternally long and idyllic Mai Khao beach in the northwest is relatively little frequented. Patong Beach is the most visited.

Phuket - beaches to dream and enjoy

If you want to visit the beaches on Phuket, you are really spoiled for choice. Some of the most beautiful beaches Southeast Asia lie on the island. From the far north down to the deepest south of the island there are countless beautiful dream beaches. The best known is probably the beach of Patong, which is located in the very west of the island.

Unfortunately, this large bay is not the most beautiful beach in Phuket. The bays most worth seeing on the island include Ao Sane Beach, Ya Nui Beach, Nai Harn Beach, Kata Beach, Rawai Beach, Karon Beach, Surin Beach and, above all, Mai Khao Beach in the very north-west. Beach recommendations are among the most important for most travelers holiday tips, We present the most beautiful beaches of Phuket in our ranking.

1. Ao Sane Beach – small and incredibly fine

Ao Sane Beach is probably the southernmost beach on Phuket. It is located below the Baan Krating Resorts at the crating chap. For those who travel from further afield, the way is worth it: crystal clear water, rock formations and jungles right up to the water are waiting for you. Although the beach is just below the Resorts Ao Sane Beach is open to the public. The tiny bay makes the resort one of the most beautiful beach hotels in the region.

In my opinion, Ao Sane Beach is the most beautiful beach on Phuket. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

At this beach you can also find a swing on the beach in Phuket. I have to say that I think the whole area in the south is the most beautiful region on the island. There you won't just find this wonderful beach, but you can also go hiking or stand-up paddling in the jungle.

2. Ya Nui Beach – the gem in the very south

One of the most beautiful beaches - some might even like it better than Ao Sane Beach - is Ya Nui Beach. It is also located in the extreme south of Phuket and is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket. The bay is a real eye-catcher because it consists of two sections of beach separated by a large rock.

Ya Nui Beach is much busier and is visited by significantly more holidaymakers, but compared to the large beaches in the west there is still very little going on here. The beach is ideal for swimming, stand up paddling and Snorkeling on vacation, This is also a beach on Phuket where you can find a swing.

3. Nai Harn Beach – the smallest of the large beaches

Nai Harn Beach is basically the smallest of the large beaches in the west of Phuket. It is located between Ao Sane Beach and Ya Nui Beach. It is slightly smaller than the nearest beaches, Kata Beach and Karon Beach.

Nai Harn Beach has a great location between crystal clear and turquoise water, a forest with restaurants and shops travel gear and Beach Accessories, the Nai Harn Temple and the Nai Harn Lake. Clearly a great alternative for everyone who is annoyed by Karon, Kata and Patong.

4. Kata Beach Phuket – perfect for surfers

Kata Beach Phuket consists of Kata Yai Beach and Kata Noi Beach. The latter is significantly smaller. Both bays are incredibly beautiful, but due to their location in the holiday resort of the same name, they are much busier and more visited than the previous beaches.

Anyone who likes a little more hustle and bustle will definitely feel at home on these two stretches of beach. A big plus point for Kata Yai: There is a surfboard rental service. This gives you the opportunity to actually go surfing.

May 5th Khao Beach – the quiet Phuket insider tip beach in the north

Mai Khao Beach in the very northwest of the island is still a real insider tip on Phuket. The kilometer-long sandy beach is very quiet and idyllic. There are only a few high-quality hotels there.

Even in high season, travelers will find plenty of peace and relaxation here. At the moment there are a lot of people settling there Luxury Hotels of the large and well-known hotel chains, so that the idyll on the beach will soon be over there too.

6. Rawai Beach – relaxed with a view

Rawaii beach consists of several sections that run around corners, so to speak. While the southern section has a promenade lined with shops and restaurants, the northern part of Rawai Beach is a relatively quiet and pristine stretch of beach that is mainly built up with residential buildings and upscale hotels.

Rawai Beach is perfect for anyone looking for a mix of vibrancy and tranquility. You can take long walks on the beach there and are sure to find one or two bars where you can have a cool drink on the way.

7. Surin Beach – the little beauty north of Patong

Surin Beach is a relatively small beach north of Patong and is therefore ideal for anyone who has a hotel in the area. It is located almost centrally in the west in the middle of the island and is therefore a central contact point. Surin Beach is easy to reach even from the east side of Phuket.

By the way, you shouldn't confuse the beach with the Surin Islands. These are located further north of Phuket. There are even much nicer beaches there.

8. Karon Beach Phuket – the Middle Kingdom

Karon is the middle of the three major beaches in western Phuket. Karon Beach Phuket is ideal for those who like it a little more hustle and bustle and who would like to do water sports such as jet skiing, stand-up paddling or kayaking.

You can also rent boards or jet skis on the long, busy beach of Karon. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

There are also plenty of options for eating and shopping on the busy beaches. Karon itself is a slightly less grubby alternative to Patong.

9. Freedom Beach – the beach with the most beautiful name

Freedom Beach Phuket is also a very beautiful and small beach, located south of Patong and north of Karon. This already shows the problem: It is located between two of the largest holiday resorts and is therefore frequently visited despite its small size.

Freedom Beach Phuket is also a very beautiful and small beach, located south of Patong and north of Karon.
Freedom Beach Phuket is also a very beautiful and small beach, located south of Patong and north of Karon.

It can be accessed by boat or easily reached by scooter. If you don't mind the fact that there are loungers lined up next to each other, you will also find a wonderful beach here.

10. Patong Beach – crowded beach

Patong is Phuket's party juggernaut and the island's largest vacation spot. Patong Beach is correspondingly overcrowded.

Anyone who settles here is guaranteed to get the full program of East Asian tourism mistakes, but can also observe their fellow human beings with a healthy pinch of foreign embarrassment.

The most beautiful beach hotels on Phuket

On Phuket you will find some outstanding hotels and resorts. But by no means all are located directly on the beach or even in the vicinity of a bay. Of course, most holidaymakers prefer a hotel that is located directly on the beach or at least has a sea view. I stayed at the Baan Krating Phuket Resort and I highly recommend the hotel for its affordability and beachfront location.

Ao Sane Beach at Krating Cape is, in my opinion, the most beautiful beach on Phuket. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Many of the other resorts that are located directly on the beach are luxury hotels and therefore cost a hefty surcharge. Great premium resorts that are among the most beautiful beach hotels on Phuket are definitely The Shore at Katathani Phuket in Kata Noi Beach and the Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort, which is located north of Karon Beach on a small dream beach.

Phuket - Beaches for Snorkeling

One of the best Phuket beaches for snorkeling is Ya Nui Beach in the very south. As an avid diver and snorkeler, I know that while turquoise water is great for swimming and splashing around, it is not necessarily ideal for snorkeling and diving. Because there is usually not that much going on on the sandy bottom, which gives the water its turquoise blue color.

The beautiful Ao Sane Beach is located directly below the Baan Krating Phuket Resort. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

Rocks and offshore reefs that you can snorkel along are better. You can find it on Ya Nui Beach, which is divided by a larger rock. On the outside of the rock you will find a reef that is suitable for beginners.

For advanced snorkelers there is the option of paddling to the island of Koh Man. There are incredibly beautiful corral gardens and a world of wildlife that really has it all. On the current side of Koh Man you should even have the opportunity to observe sharks and other larger animals such as turtles.

Beach alternatives in Thailand

The most beautiful beaches in Phuket are of course not to be equated with the most beautiful beaches in Thailand - they are only a subset of them. If your looking for one Beach vacation in Thailand you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the world in Thailand. These include the dream beaches of the island of Koh Lipe, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

The beaches on Koh Lipe are also simply incredibly beautiful. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The islands of Koh Mook (Koh Muk), Koh Kradan and Koh Ngai also offer incredibly beautiful beaches. Basically, you can also go on a discovery tour directly in Thailand - there are still so many undiscovered dream beaches in Thailand that you are guaranteed to find one that nothing has been written about yet - if in doubt, just ask a few locals.

What do I have to pay attention to on the beach on Phuket?

If you want to go to the beach on Phuket, there are a lot of things you should definitely consider. Probably the most important tips are to look after your valuables when on the water and to protect yourself from surf back currents - better known as rip currents - in the water. In addition, smoking on the beach is increasingly being punished in Thailand. You should really be careful, otherwise it can get really expensive. But there are of course a lot more things that you should definitely pay attention to on the beach on Phuket.

1. Weather and seasonal issues

Watch the climate: Phuket experiences two main weather periods: the rainy season from May to October and the dry season from November to April. During the dry season the weather is ideal for beach visits, with less rainfall and more pleasant temperatures. During the rainy season you can still experience sunny days, but be prepared for sudden rain showers.

2. Beach safety and sea conditions

Watch out for currents: Strong undercurrents can occur on some beaches, especially during the monsoon season. Look for warning signs and follow lifeguard instructions. Swim at patrolled beaches to stay safe.

3. Sun protection and health

Protect yourself from the sun: The sunlight in Thailand is strong. Always wear sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses and a hat. Avoid being exposed to the sun for long periods of time during the midday heat.

4. Hydrate and eat

Drink enough water: Keep yourself hydrated, especially in the heat. Avoid tap water; buy bottled water instead. Watch your diet to avoid stomach upset. Try local specialties at beach stalls, but pay attention to the cleanliness of the stalls.

5. Respect the local culture

Note local customs: Thailand has a rich culture and tradition. Wear appropriate clothing, especially when moving from beach areas to public places. Show respect for the locals and their culture.

6. Environmental protection

Protect nature: Phuket is struggling with pollution, so help keep the beaches clean. Avoid leaving trash behind and use reusable or biodegradable products when possible.

7. Security of personal belongings

Keep your valuables safe: On crowded beaches, it's important to take care of your belongings. Use hotel safes for valuables and don't carry too much cash with you.

8. Explore the underwater world

Enjoy the sea responsibly: When snorkeling or diving, it is important to respect the marine environment. Do not touch corals or marine life as this can damage their habitats.
