Most people head between June and September to go on vacation or fly. But have you ever observed August more closely? At this time it's really the summer slump and in some places it seems deserted. Most people are on the go this month. And that's why I naturally ask myself: Where can you go on vacation in August?
I have picked out some summer holiday destinations for you that will make your midsummer a real treat and have also deliberately included one or two less popular and well-known insider travel destinations in my hit list. However, the ranking is led by two real classics – Spain and Italy. These two holiday countries are always available and if you want to spend a great and relaxing holiday, you are always spot on here.
Europe is so big and so diverse - ideal for a summer holiday, since May to September is the best time to travel on the continent in many places. And the best for Europeans: You can just drive off, let yourself drift and discover regions of Europe where you have never been before - totally exciting!
In order to simply throw a few July travel destinations and August travel destinations into the room, I have put together a small list of destinations that can be reached quickly and easily within Central Europe. The Eastern European countries in particular are also worth a look. Poland, Romania and Bulgaria are really beautiful in many places and absolutely worth a trip.
But of course Scandinavia, the Benelux countries and the Mediterranean are also great travel destinations in July and August. Discover the best summer holiday destinations in Europe. The list of options is incredibly long and there are so many great holiday destinations and regions waiting to be discovered. But which destinations are really worth visiting and offer the best travel experience?
As a travel expert, I did a little research and picked five places that I think should definitely be on your list for a summer vacation in Europe.
1. Spain – summer holidays in the Germans’ favorite travel destination
Spain is the most popular summer holiday destination for Germans and not without reason. There are a variety of options for a perfect vacation. The Balearic Islands, especially Mallorca, attract with beautiful beaches and crystal clear water. If you prefer to be more adventurous, the Canary Islands are the place for you. Lanzarote offers impressive volcanic landscapes and Gran Canaria has great hiking trails along the impressive coastline. Tenerife impresses with its breathtaking landscape and unique sights.
But mainland Spain also has a lot to offer. A tour through the many picturesque small towns and vibrant metropolises such as Madrid or Barcelona is definitely worth it. Art, culture and culinary delights at the highest level await you here. Whether you prefer a beach holiday or a combination of beach, culture and cuisine – Spain is the perfect travel destination. In the evening you can relax at the beach bar, enjoy delicious cocktails with friends and enjoy the nightlife to the fullest.
2. Romania - ideal travel destination in July and August?
Romania is a real insider tip among summer holiday destinations in Europe and is often overlooked by many holidaymakers. The Eastern European country has a lot to offer, especially in summer. Whether an exciting round trip, a city trip or a relaxed beach holiday on the Black Sea - there is something for every taste. The turbulent history and culture of the country fascinates and the world-famous Dracula Castle is an absolute must for every visitor. But also the old towns and the picturesque Carpathians are a highlight for everyone who likes to hike and explore nature.
So Romania is a great alternative for anyone looking for an adventure holiday in Eastern Europe. There are still many untouched places to be discovered here and the population is very hospitable and open to visitors. Another advantage of Romania is that the country is still relatively cheap compared to other travel destinations in Europe. So you can spend an unforgettable summer holiday even with a small budget.
3. Malta - a cultural Midsummer Night's Dream in July and August
Malta is a true gem in the Mediterranean and offers many cultural activities and sights in summer. The island state is characterized by its beautiful architecture, which is reflected in the many sandstone buildings and churches. But the friendly and open nature of the people and the delicious Mediterranean cuisine also make Malta a great travel destination for a summer holiday.

The breathtaking beaches are among the most beautiful and unspoilt in Europe and invite you to swim, snorkel and relax. The emerald coves surrounded by rocky cliffs are simply a dream. Above all, the Costa Smeralda in the northeast of the island is known for its dream beaches such as Porto Cervo or Porto Rotondo.
But the interior of Sardinia also has a lot to offer: imposing mountain ranges, spectacular gorges and untouched natural landscapes invite you to hike and explore. The historic cities like Cagliari, the capital of the island, or Alghero also have a lot of charm and are worth a visit. Here you will find numerous bars, restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy the Italian way of life.
5. Hungary - typical Eastern Europe travel destination in July and August
Hungary is one of the typical Eastern European travel destinations that unfolds its full beauty especially in summer. The country impresses with its centuries-old traditions, its tasty cuisine, its beautiful landscape and the hospitality of its people. Hungary is a country that has not yet been overrun by mass tourism, so you can spend a peaceful and relaxing holiday here. The dry, continental climate invites you to stay outdoors and enjoy the sun in the summer months.
There are numerous cultural highlights to discover, especially in the capital Budapest, including the famous Chain Bridge, Buda Castle and the imposing St. Stephen's Basilica. But also Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, is a popular travel destination in Hungary and offers a variety of water sports, cozy holiday homes and luxurious hotels. If you like hiking, you should visit the Bükk National Park, where numerous hiking trails meander through a beautiful landscape.
Hungary is also an ideal family destination as the country offers many kid-friendly activities such as theme parks, animal parks and outdoor activities. Anyone arriving by car can easily reach Hungary via Austria or the Czech Republic and be inland in just a few hours. In short: Hungary offers many possibilities for an unforgettable summer holiday in Europe.

Watch out for the best time to travel
I always keep the best time to travel to my favorite travel destinations in mind - because when planning your trip it is incredibly important to know when and where is the best place to go on holiday. This basically applies to all travel destinations and types of travel. You don't want to go on a skiing holiday in the middle of summer and you don't want to fly to Egypt in the middle of summer when it's 50 degrees Celsius. Nor would we want to be in Thailand or the Maldives during the rainy season.
Destinations in July and August – long-distance travel in summer?
Anyone who longs for sun, beach and sea during the summer holidays, but does not only want to travel in Europe, should think about exotic travel destinations that also show their best side in the European summer. There are numerous destinations in Asia, Africa, North and South America that offer long-distance vacations in July and August. Whether it's a beach holiday in Bali, dream island hopping in the Seychelles or a road trip through the USA - the possibilities are endless.
In the northern hemisphere, Asia has the rainy season in summer, but there are also destinations like Bali or Vietnam that can be visited without any problems. South American Peru with its historical sites and impressive landscapes is also worth a visit in July and August. While it's winter in Australia and South Africa, you can enjoy midsummer in North America and spend the holiday season on road trips, in national parks or in metropolises like New York City or Los Angeles.
1. Bali and Lombok - high season in European summer
Bali and Lombok are two Indonesian islands that show their best side in the European summer. Bali has become one of the most popular travel destinations in Southeast Asia in recent years, attracting millions of tourists every year. July to October is the best time to relax, surf or visit temples in Bali. During this period, the weather is dry and pleasantly warm, ideal for a beach holiday.
Although Bali can be an expensive destination, there is plenty of affordable accommodation and dining to suit all budgets. The flight can be a major expense, but if you can get a bargain you won't regret visiting this paradise island. In addition to Bali, the neighboring island of Lombok is also a beautiful summer destination. Compared to Bali, Lombok is less touristy and therefore a bit quieter and more original. Here you can enjoy the impressive nature, for example climb the beautiful Mount Rinjani or relax on the beautiful beach of Kuta.
2. Mauritius - best in July and August
Mauritius is a tropical island off the East African coast and a real insider tip for an unforgettable summer vacation. The best time to travel is from July to August, when the climate is pleasantly warm and dry. A true paradise on earth awaits you with crystal clear water, endless beaches, dense forests and a rich flora and fauna. From fascinating diving and snorkeling adventures in the coral reefs to hiking in the mountains and forests, the island has a lot to offer. But those interested in culture will also get their money's worth, because Mauritius has an eventful history and a diverse culture to offer. Even though the flight to Mauritius can be a little more expensive than to other destinations, it is definitely worth it. 4. North America – Summer road trip through the States and Canada
For those who prefer to spend the summer on a road trip through North America, the months of July and August are the ideal travel time. The more northern regions of the US and Canada are perfect travel destinations during these months. Motorhomes give you the freedom to go from place to place and explore North America's stunning natural beauty. The spectacular landscapes range from rugged mountain ranges and endless prairies to idyllic lakes and national parks.
