Portugal – a versatile and affordable travel destination

The diverse and adventurous country in southern Europe is one of the most beautiful and attractive travel destinations in the world. Millions of holidaymakers come to Portugal every year to spend their holidays and the best time of the year. With 17 million tourists, Portugal is one of the most visited countries in the world. Holidaymakers particularly often head to the Algarve and the region around the capital Lisbon. With a particularly mild climate even in winter, with over 850 kilometers of wonderful beaches and coastlines along the Atlantic and more than 3000 hours of sunshine a year, Portugal is the ideal country for beach holidays, bathing holidays, culture, explorers, backpackers, families and all travelers with big and small budget. As a holiday destination, Portugal is a real all-rounder!

Central location of Portugal

Portugal and central? This seems to contradict itself, because the country is located at the southwestern end of the Iberian Peninsula and also of Europe. But if you change your perspective, the continental part of Portugal is suddenly very central. In addition to the mainland, this state also includes the Azores archipelago and the Madeira archipelago. The country borders Spain to the north and east. Portugal is the westernmost point of the continent of Europe.

Thanks to its central location on the Atlantic, Portugal is easily accessible from anywhere. In just a few hours' flight you can travel to this unique country from all over Europe. Due to its particularly western and southern location, Portugal is particularly easy to reach from North and South America and the Caribbean region. Remember: New York is at the same altitude as Lisbon.

Where does the name Portugal come from?

Portugal as a name probably originated in the Roman Empire several thousand years ago. It comes from the ancient port of Porto, where Portos means port in Latin. What exactly the second part of the word “cale” means is controversial. It is possible that this meant the Gallaecians, a tribe from that time. Others believe that it is a derivative of the Latin word “calidus”, which means warm.

Accordingly, Portugal would mean “warm port”. Still others suspect that the second part of the word is the Greek word Carlos, meaning beautiful. Accordingly, Portugal would be translated as “beautiful harbor”. In the Middle Ages, the two words moved closer and closer together, first to Portos Cale, then to Portucale, and later Portugale. And from there it was just a stone's throw to the country's current name.

Holidays in Portugal - one of the most popular travel destinations in the world

Portugal is a beautiful and unique holiday destination. It's not without reason that millions of tourists come here every year. The state on the Atlantic has a beautiful coast with wonderful, long sandy beaches, dune landscapes and diverse vegetation. The Algarve in the southwest is particularly popular with tourists. But the capital Lisbon is also a magnet for explorers. The island group of Madeira and Porto Santo as well as the Azores are popular travel destinations where warm and spring-like temperatures prevail all year round.

Capital Lisbon - young and cosmopolitan metropolis

Lisbon is probably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The architecture, the maritime flair and the relaxed southern European way of life make the big city at the mouth of the Tajo river a very special experience. The old town of Lisbon is particularly beautiful. There you can eat tapas in countless restaurants and simply enjoy the good life. From São Jorge Castle. from there you can see the whole city.

This beautiful metropolis is particularly characterized by its architecture, which appeals to all the senses with its liveliness. Here you will find big city flair as well as beaches and the iconic Ponte 25 de Abril, which at first glance looks similar to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Madeira - one of the most beautiful islands in the world

Madeira is an archipelago consisting of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo and embodies the epitome of nature and beauty. Madeira is not called the flower island for nothing. Unlike the Canary Islands, for example, Madeira is very green and is home to the largest laurel forest in the world. The lively capital Funchal is a cultural heritage site and invites you to visit it extensively.

Spring-like temperatures prevail all year round on Madeira and it has a diverse marine life: whales and dolphins can be observed around the island. Festivals are celebrated all year round in Madeira, such as the Atlantic Festival and the Flower Festival. Anyone who comes here to vacation will experience the hospitable atmosphere of the locals.

Azores - a green jewel

Much more remote than Madeira, in the middle of the Atlantic, halfway to North America and the Caribbean, are the archipelago of the Azores - not quite, they are located 1369 kilometers west of mainland Europe (Cabo da Roca) and 4382 kilometers east of North America (US state Virginia). This uniquely beautiful archipelago is somewhat reminiscent of Hawaii and is a piece of green nature surrounded by thousands of kilometers of sea. The temperatures are pleasant all year round. Because the islands are of volcanic origin, they are very rocky and geysers can be seen between crater lakes and mountain peaks.

The Azores consist of numerous islands, including Corvo and Flores, Faial with the island capital Horta, Pico with the town of Madalena, São Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira. The capital of Terceira is Angra do Heroísmo, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Other islands include Santa Maria, the Formigas, an uninhabited archipelago, and São Miguel, the largest island (main island) of the Azores. Its capital is Ponta Delgada, which is also the capital of the entire archipelago. You can also watch wonderful whales and dolphins in the Azores. Divers will particularly get their money's worth here, as sharks such as blue sharks and manta rays, the mobulas, can be observed.

Algarve - a paradise for surfers

The Algarve probably has the world's best-known historical significance for Portugal. The explorers set off here in the 15th century to sail across the Atlantic to America. Today the Algarve is an incredibly diverse destination for holidaymakers who come here for their beach holidays. There's a reason for that. The beaches are of excellent quality. They are finely sandy and ready and stretch almost endlessly. Surfers love the waves of the Atlantic and athletes also get their money's worth along the coast. The Algarve stretches around the southwestern tip of Portugal.
