The DJI Osmo Pocket is one of the smallest electronic three-axis stabilizers with an integrated, high-resolution camera on the market. What can the mini gimbal do? And how does it fare in everyday life and when traveling? We tried the all-round stabilizer in our DJI Osmo Pocket test and checked it from back to front.

When the package fluttered into the house, we were just baff: Almost 400 Euro for such a tiny mini package? That can not be true, was my first thought. And it did not get any better: I unwrapped the DJI Osmo Pocket and came out with a really tiny device that reminded me of a robot science fiction movie and visually somehow did not correspond to what I had imagined. Maybe it was because I still think so DJI Osmo Mobile 3 I had a stabilizer for the iPhone in mind, which is estimated to be about five times larger and has been with us in everyday life for a long time Journeys provides good service.
The Osmo Pocket, on the other hand, is downright tiny, being one of the smallest electronic three-axis stabilizers with an integrated camera and integrated Touch display applies. Since I am now a big fan of DJI products, it was clear to me straight away: That couldn't have been everything, there was more to come. And that's exactly how it was. The DJI Osmo Pocket really delivered in the test.

DJI Osmo Pocket in the test – first experiences with the mini handheld
Once you get used to the dimensions and accept the minuteness of the product, you can start with the DJI Osmo Pocket. That's intuitive right from the start Gadget serve. The MicroSD card slot (card not included) is on the bottom left and requires a fast card that works well with 4K video. The gimbal is loaded on the underside via USB C - as far as the Osmo is state-of-the-art, ie on the cutting edge of technology.
The case is made of a lightweight plastic material and is roughened on the front and back to make it easier to hold. Overall, the exterior appears to be of mediocre quality. There are only two buttons on the Osmo - so there's about a 50 percent chance that you'll find the right button to turn it on straight away. Above it there is a square display that can be operated via touch input. There is a port between the display and the buttons in which you can insert either a USB C plug (supplied), a Lightning plug (supplied) for iPhones or a Micro USB plug (the latter not supplied) to connect the device to a smartphone such as the iPhone or tablet computer like that iPad Pro connect to.

Image stability and motion tracking – This is how the DJI Osmo Pocket performs in the test
For our Osmo Pocket test, we tested the gimbal on a particularly demanding subject - our dog. Four-legged friends move so quickly that it's hard to keep up with normal cameras when filming and the images tend to be blurry. In this test environment, the Osmo Pocket was able to demonstrate its strengths perfectly. With ActiveTrack, the camera automatically follows the object. The focusing is reliable and the Osmo's images are razor-sharp in daylight.
The user, however, is spoiled for choice, whether he wants to use the cam separately or docked to the iPhone. Stand-alone, the Osmo Pocket feels more free, connected to the smartphone gives you more grip and stability. In addition, the pictures and videos can then be transmitted directly. The different recording modes work similar to the Osmo Mobile 2.
The gimbal can use ActiveTrack in different modes - slow or fast tracking. In our test, the Osmo has lost the objects now and then. In selfie shots ActiveTrack is even preset and keeps the face always in the middle of the picture. The active tracking of objects works solid, but - at least in my sense - not quite as smooth and reliable as in the combination of iPhone and Osmo Mobile 2 and the current DJI drones. The Stabilizer camera tracks the previously marked object in a gentle and wobble-free manner.
As far as stabilization is concerned, the Osmo Pocket is just as great as the Osmo Mobile and drones. In it DJI is simply experienced. However, the movement tracking seems a bit expandable, although we complain at a very high level. Maybe the ActiveTrack can also be improved on the software side of DJI? Anyway, we are curious and continue to make happy pictures with our Osmo Pocket.
The size makes the DJI Osmo Pocket perfect for traveling
With its compact size, the Osmo Pocket is just perfect for travel and spontaneous photography on vacation Destinations to experience it even more intensively and to take even better photos. The potential holiday gadget comes standard with a protective plastic cover lined with soft fleece. The Osmo Pocket can be perfectly transported in it. The case is so robust that you can do that Travel gadget Can also easily be put in your pocket. Due to its small size, the Osmo is more easily accessible than a smartphone and is therefore perfect for snapshots when traveling.
The disadvantage here is certainly the slightly fewer setting options compared to a smartphone camera. You can solve this problem to some extent by pairing the Osmo Pocket with your smartphone and operating it via the Mimo app. Then you have a larger selection of setting options available and (depending on the smartphone model) you can take just as good pictures as with the integrated smartphone camera. Alternatively, you have the option of ordering a control wheel for the Osmo as an optional accessory, which makes operation even easier.
The bottom line is that the Osmo Pocket is made for travel. The travel gadget will certainly quickly become an essential part of our travel equipment that will no longer be missing on our tours in the future.
What we lack on this electronic handheld gimbal
Basically, we currently lack one thing in the Osmo Pocket: The shots in the dark and semi-dark are relatively grainy and we would like a sync of built-in flash of the smartphone with the photo and video recording function of the Osmo at least in the Mimo App.
The smartphone used with the Osmo Pocket can at least contribute some brightness as a video light via the flashlight function. This is definitely a start. We hope the Osmo Pocket will continue to evolve through the software, so maybe this feature will be added later.
The strengths and weaknesses of the Osmo at a glance
The DJI Osmo Pocket in the test has apparently many strengths and qualified as a reliable photo tool both for everyday life and for travel. However, there are a few weaknesses to the many positive qualities that we naturally do not want to contain.
Strengths of the stabilizer
- the incredibly compact size in relation to performance
- DJI's already known perfect image stabilization
- ActiveTrack object tracking (we love it with our other DJI gadgets)
- Picture quality of the tiny camera is very neat
- the DJI Osmo Pocket is always at hand
- extremely easy and fast transfer of pictures and videos to the smartphone
Weaknesses of the stabilizer
- The case feels a bit like plastic
- The DJI Memo App is still capable of improvement
- the price of 359 Euro (we paid, price varies) is crisp

DJI Osmo Pocket in the test: faster to pull out than a smartphone
The bottom line in the test is that the DJI Osmo Pocket proved to be small but powerful. The three-axis stabilizer with integrated camera impressed us across the board. However, the gadget has also received some negative reviews on the Internet. We can't understand the many bad reviews on the internet at all. The Osmo does exactly what it is supposed to and what the manufacturer promises.
It takes razor-sharp photos and videos that are almost completely shake-free thanks to the three-axis stabilizer. You can connect the Osmo Pocket both alone and in direct combination with a smartphone or tablet. Both options are completely intuitive and practical. You just need to connect DJI Osmo Pocket to a smartphone, tablet or computer to make settings or update the firmware.
The most common complaint from users is against the DJI Mimo app, which must be installed to use and requires over 100 MB of smartphone memory. The smartphone program is certainly not the best app of the year, but it does what it is supposed to: The Osmo Pocket is excellent to use. We hope that DJI will improve the app even further in the future - this is likely to be the case.
Overall, our conclusion and test result for the DJI Osmo Pocket therefore quite clear and clear: The tiny handheld with three-axis stabilizer and integrated camera is an absolute purchase. The device you can always have with you and get crisp and wobble-free images in every situation. The holiday gadget is small but mighty. He has the potential to become our travel essentials in the future Apple Watch or Apple AirPods (test) to include. Because in his case it's really the size that matters:
Anyone who already has the DJI Osmo Pocket Mobile 2 or one Drone like DJI Mavic Air you will simply be amazed at the difference in size. While you always have to have a backpack with you or a bag to transport the DJI Osmo Pocket Mobile 2 in a protected manner, the Osmo Pocket can simply be put in your trouser pocket in its included protective case - as the name suggests. It couldn't be easier. When you need it, you have it at hand to capture memories.
The manufacturer DJI does exactly what it promises with the small, smart gimbal stabilizer: a super small handheld that you can have with you in every situation. It is therefore perfect for all situations in everyday life and on holiday. In any case, we will always have him with us in the future.
