First impressions – bought a DJI Mavic Air drone – now what?

After the DJI Mavic Air drone was delivered to us, I had to test it, of course, immediately and immediately in the apartment. Just the white box with the image of the device just invites you to unpack the copter immediately and try it out. In fact, we got a bit of Christmas spirit on our hands. Because the packaging was well filled:

  • DJI Mavic Air drone including battery
  • high quality remote control (usable with or without smartphone)
  • Charging cable, several data cables and various adapters
  • high-quality carrying case / case for the drone
  • Second battery (I have directly ordered separately)

Included were various cables and adapter plugs, a protective cover for the device and many accessories such as a protective grid for the rotors and a remote control that can be connected to the smartphone. Within seconds, the drone was unfolded, the battery was inserted and the connection over the iOS app or on the iPhone (how well that works with an Android smartphone, we unfortunately have no experience). And as soon as the DJI Mavic Air is switched on, it starts to rush like an old PC from the nineties. Quietly, this gadget is not really.

As soon as that Smartphone is paired (in our case, the iPhone X), appears on the screen, the control panel and the live image of the high-resolution camera. Very exciting and promising when you see it for the first time. At the same time, various warnings expire because you are in the apartment. But we just ignored them, because you can take off in your own home, as long as the neighbors do not mind. All I had to do was calibrate the compass, let's start.

After the takeoff, be sure to be very careful with the flight movements!

Mavic Air first flight in your living room?

With a deafening noise, the DJI Mavic Air started in our living room and immediately started loudly sounding the alarm. Because the obstacle sensors naturally recognized obstacles in every direction (the walls of the rooms). So I first had to issue the sensors.

But now newbies should be careful: You then fly manually without help. Once pressed too fast on the joystick and the drone claps depending on the direction either against the ceiling or against one of the walls. After the takeoff, be sure to be very careful with the flight movements! In this way, I was able to gain my first flight experience indoors in the sheltered environment before letting go of "the beast" as a pilot on humanity. After only a few minutes, even though I did not have any drone experience before, I was able to take really strong selfies and film and photograph our living room from a completely new perspective.

The first impression is therefore clear: the DJI Mavic Air is firstly very suitable for beginners, secondly, it offers excellent opportunities for photographers. Besides, she is the perfect Holiday gadget, Therefore, I could hardly wait to turn the drone on the Sardinia trip "on the left" and to test from back to front.

DJI Mavic Air in the test – tried it extensively while traveling

After our first brief test in the living room, the DJI Mavic Air drone had its first major mission on holiday in Sardinia. Of course, we first informed ourselves about the drone laws in Italy. If you use the Mavic Air, with something over 400 grams a relatively small and light drone, you do not have to pay much attention to it. The drone laws in Italy are much more relaxed overall than in Germany. Of course, shortly before our departure, we completed drone liability insurance, which is also valid worldwide in foreign countries.

And so nothing stood in the way of our first drone flight in the open air. We looked for a deserted dream beach and really took off with the drone there for the first time ever. We also paired the iPhone with the remote control for our first outdoor flight. After a little preparation, the quadcopter was already in the air.

Our first impression: Together with the remote control and the paired smartphone, it flies much better than with the iPhone or the alone iPad Pro alone. The remote has much more control and handling over the device, can react much faster in flight, take photos and videos via two mechanical buttons, and switch back and forth much faster between the photo and video modes.

And so the first flight with Mavic Air on vacation in Sardinia really knocked our socks off. Flying a drone is incredibly fun. To be honest, the rest of our vacation was just about finding suitable and spectacular places where we could let the aircraft take off. Below I would like to give you a little more insight into the specifications and features of the drone that particularly impressed us.

Features and specifications of the DJI Mavic Air

A quick overview

  • Foldable, compact drone perfect for traveling
  • 21 minutes of flight time per battery (varies depending on use)
  • Weight of the drone: only 430 grams
  • maximum speed: 68.4 km / h (meets the requirements of the future EU regulation)
  • 12 megapixel camera with three-axis stabilizer
  • 8 GB internal memory (expandable by MicroSD)
  • maximum range up to 4 kilometers (according to the manufacturer - we had connection problems from 500 meters)
  • Use Smart Capture to control the drone by hand gestures alone
  • special flight modes (ActiveTrack, QuickShot and TapFly)
  • Spherical panoramas with 32 megapixels from 25 single images
  • 4K slow motion video with 100 Mbit / s
  • HDR photos

Functions and specifications of the all-rounder drone – This is how the DJI Mavic Air performs in the test

To repeat it again: when we took the Mavic Air to Test ordered, we started from scratch and were complete drone novices. But it was clear "love on the first flight". When we left the beach in Sardinia for the first time, the matter was clear to us. But the spectacular, crisp videos and photos that made the copter from the air of the landscape and of us were worth the cost. However, if you believe that taking off and taking photos / videos is already exhausting the capabilities of the DJI Mavic Air, you are wrong. During our ten days in Sardinia, we flew daily and only gradually exhausted the individual features and specifications of the flying object.

I'm actually not much of a selfie fan. But with the Mavic Air you get to know yourself from a whole new perspective in the truest sense of the word - namely from above. With various flight modes you can record yourself or other people (who have previously given their consent) in really interesting ways. For example, there is a follow mode “ActiveTrack”, in which the drone hovers after a specific person.

You can walk around the person in question and get shake-free tracking shots for which you previously had to lay rails. QuickShot is also exciting, in which the Mavic Air moves, approaches or moves away from an object in a predetermined orbit. There is also a Cinema mode that enables even smoother camera progressions. The spherical panoramas in 360 degree mode are certainly spectacular. However, the 180 degree panoramas, which look really impressive, have proven to be more suitable and presentable for everyday use.

While there is a lot to like about the DJI Mavic Air, we didn't like the connectivity and range. If the drone is connected to the iPhone or iPad and you want to switch to using it with the remote control, this often does not work (as of April 2019). I suspect this is a software issue that may be resolved with future updates to the DJI Go app. Secondly, with the combination of remote control and iPhone 600 meters is a decent distance and the drone is then out of sight - but that is a long way from the four kilometer range specified by the manufacturer.

Our experience with the DJI Mavic Air

Advantages of Mavic Air

  • high resolution camera
  • many recording modes
  • great flight characteristics
  • easy operation
  • all sorts of helpful sensors and algorithms
  • many individual settings options

Disadvantages of Mavic Air

  • partly unreliable connectivity
  • the maximum distance is well below the stated four kilometers

Mavic Air in the test – the flying beast for spectacular travel photos

I've been a fan of DJI products for a while now and have the DJI Osmo Gimbal tested. That's why the expectation of our Mavic Air test was quite high. In short: The small drone has thrilled us "out of the box" and never disappointed us. DJI, the manufacturer from China, has left nothing to be desired in the current Mavic Air. The drone is mature, offers the range of functions for professionals and is also very easy to use. It is anything but a simple toy - with the device you can really do a lot of things. On the one hand, it is ideal for photographers looking for a spectacular new way to capture images from different perspectives.

With the different recording modes, selfies can be done from every perspective. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The various setting modes make it easy to record impressive video clips and photos. In some of the possible video recordings you used to have a whole film set and team needed. Overall, the advantages of the DJI Mavic Air outweigh the photographers point of view in the test. Especially the high-trigger camera including three-axis stabilizer in the drone convinced. It's just fun to look back at the crisp photos and videos in retrospect. The numerous shooting modes allow the photographer to make completely new and creative settings. Especially with selfies, portraits and group photos as well as videos, there are numerous ways to spice up the recording and make it more creative.

The ease of operation of the drone is of course also a clear plus point. Within a few minutes the device is ready to go and can take off. It can be controlled intuitively and can be flown immediately without any problems. The Mavic Air has established itself in the test as a flying camera for photographers and at the same time as a sophisticated aircraft for hobby pilots. We initially bought the drone as a flying camera so that we could take spectacular new photos.

But after just a short time, the flight characteristics themselves were convincing. Flying around at high speed in sport mode is just a lot of fun. The bottom line is that you get two excellent products here and have the opportunity to really let off steam with this excellent quadcopter drone. After just a few days with the device, we are sure: we have tamed the beast and found an exciting new hobby.

We ordered the DJI Mavic Air on our own initiative and paid for it ourselves. The test is therefore independent and exactly matches the experience we have with this product.
