Baan Krating Phuket Resort – Experiences & Reviews

by

Between a dense, untouched jungle and a secluded, heavenly dream beach lies Phuket's last real and original bungalow resort, which has not yet fallen victim to any luxury renovation. The hotel is located just before Cape Krating on the peninsula of the same name, which is perhaps the most beautiful corner of Thailand's largest island. I visited the facility and spent a week there in a cozy bungalow. I would like to bring you closer to my experiences with the Baan Krating Phuket Resort and introduce you to an extraordinary hotel.

The Thai driver is unsure - where is a hotel supposed to be? He looks at me questioningly. I hand him my smartphone, which has Google Maps open, and tap my finger on the far corner of the map. He nods, now he knows. And I'm not entirely sure either. The dirt road seems to lead to nowhere, the paved road is already over and there are hardly any houses left. We still have to cross an ominous bridge and pass two half-finished new buildings.

Located in the middle of the jungle

And suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, the relief: Welcome to Baan Krating Jungle Resort Phuket. The Hotel of my choice, which I researched before my trip to Thailand. I wanted something extraordinary – a real secret Retreat, as they say. In English: A retreat where I can really let my mind wander.

And my first impression is clear: At the Baan Krating Resort you are so remote and in the middle of nowhere - it really doesn't get more lonely on Phuket. After a second bridge we are finally in the middle of the jungle, in a complex of bungalows between the jungle and wild animals and dream beach. I would like to introduce my experiences with the Baan Krating Resort Phuket to you.

My impression of Baan Krating Resort Phuket

In the middle of the jungle, above the dream beach

I'm in the middle of the jungle, I think. And that is exactly how it is. Cape Krating is a forested peninsula located in the very south of Phuket and is hardly developed. Apart from the Baan Krating Resort, there are only two smaller, more or less private new buildings here. At the foot of the peninsula there is a large five-star hotel, a few shops and restaurants. At first glance, the Baan Krating Phuket Resort looks as if it has blended seamlessly into the jungle.

Beautiful hotel complex in the jungle and on the dream beach

The dark brown bungalows are practically overgrown by vegetation consisting of tall trees, palm trees, and smaller plants, and the main building with the reception and restaurant is so nondescript that you have to look for it first. On the other side of the resort are larger new build bungalows which are obviously added later. These are probably the more expensive premium rooms.

Poolside bungalow

My bungalow is right by the pool - and it really is an eye-catcher. The relatively small swimming pool is located directly on the slope and is on two levels, which are connected by a waterfall. It's immediately clear to me: I'm definitely going to spend a lot of time here during my week at the resort.

I also like my room: Rustic with a wooden interior, a large, comfortable bed, a spacious bathroom area and a raised veranda overlooking the pool - overall the resort seems a bit dated to me, but to a degree that is tolerable. My main thought on this: Before you give the hotel a luxury renovation, you should leave it as it is.

The vicinity of Baan Krating Resort Phuket – What is there to discover?

The Baan Krating Phuket Resort is quite remote. It is about one and a half kilometers to the next town of Nai Harn, which holidaymakers can either walk, take a scooter or use the shuttle service that runs several times a day. Especially with a scooter or a rental car, the route is absolutely entertaining and can be covered quickly.

The one of the same name is located directly in Nai Harn Beach and many other bays, sights and restaurants are just a stone's throw away. What is there to discover near Baan Krating Resort? I was traveling by scooter myself and have the best sights and attractions for you holiday tips compiled in the vicinity.

1. The beaches in the area

The beautiful Ya Nui Beach is only two and a half kilometers or about ten minutes away by scooter. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The most beautiful beach in the area and perhaps even in all of Phuket is located directly at the resort: Ao Sane Beach. It is directly in front of the resort, but is also open to the public. The neighboring hotel also has access to it. This beach is tiny, idyllic and of course has the obligatory swing. The beach is definitely the highlight of the resort. Accordingly, most of the hotel's guests can be found right here on the beach during the day.

Not far away, below Promthep Cape, is the small Ya Nui Beach, which consists of two sections and is absolutely idyllic. However, significantly more holidaymakers come there than at Ao Sane Beach. Nevertheless, this bay is incredibly beautiful. You can swim, snorkel, kayak or go here without hesitation standing paddling.

Nai Harn Beach and Kata Beach offer themselves as larger and more frequented alternatives. These are two larger, beautiful sections of beach in the area, which are visited by a large number of holidaymakers. You can also surf at Kata Beach if the conditions are suitable. There is equipment rental on site.

2. Nai Ham

The beach of Nai Harn in the immediate vicinity of the Baan Krating Resort is one of the most beautiful on Phuket. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

The small town of Nai Harn is Phuket's southernmost resort and is located approximately two kilometers from Baan Krating Resort. There you can actually get everything your heart desires. Good food in numerous restaurants, bars in the evening, massages and numerous supermarkets. From Nai Harn it is not far to Kata and Rawai.

3. Culture and temples

There are two temples in the immediate vicinity of the Baan Krating Phuket Resort: First, the Nai Harn Temple (Wat Nai Harn) directly on Nai Harn Beach, which is really worth a visit. On the other side is the temple at Promthep Cape, where thousands of tourists crowd every day in front of the panoramic view. It is also not too far from the Baan Krating Resort to Phuket's most important temple, Wat Chalong - maybe a 30-minute drive.

4. Food Market

You can eat well at the Baan Krating Resort, which offers a menu from lunchtime. On the other hand, there are many very good, but relatively expensive for Thailand, restaurants in Nai Harn. A good way to feast to your heart's content is to visit a food market or night market. There you can eat everything that Thai cuisine has to offer.

Vegetables, fish and meat, often fried or with noodles and as dessert an ice cream or a smoothie prepared directly on site - all at a dirt cheap price - for the equivalent of 10 euros you can dine like a grand at the food market. From Baan Krating Phuket Resort, the nearest markets are Kata, Karon and Patong.

5. Stand up paddling and surfing

Stand up paddling and surfing are not possible directly at the hotel. I was paddling at Ya Nui Beach and surfing at Kata Beach. Both beaches offer ideal conditions to get on board. SUP in Thailand is so wonderful that I spent several days in a row on the water with my surfboard and paddle.

6. Diving and snorkeling

Diving and snorkeling to explore Thailand's marine life is one of the best things to do while staying at Baan Krating Phuket Resort. There is an excellent spot for snorkeling right on Ao Sane Beach at the hotel. All you really need is snorkeling equipment and you can easily get into the water at the resort. If you want to go scuba diving, you will find numerous high-quality diving schools in Nai Harn.

Of course, with the dive centers you have all the options and can go to Phuket's most beautiful diving spots, many of which are in the immediate vicinity of the Baan Krating Phuket Resort. With a bit of luck you can go deep into the water while diving and snorkeling Wildlife of Thailand penetrate and also encounter sharks on Phuket. However, this is a rather rare encounter. You'd have to be very lucky to spot a reef shark or free-swimming shark in the waters around Phuket.

7. Excursion to the Big Buddha

The Big Buddha is a giant statue of Buddha perched on a mountain in the south of Phuket and also only a few kilometers from the Baan Krating Resort Phuket. You can easily go there by scooter or take a taxi that takes you up the mountain. There you can expect the spectacular statue and an incredibly beautiful view over Phuket.

8. Nightlife in Patong

The Baan Krating Phuket Resort itself is ideal for those seeking tranquility. But if you want to do this, you can plunge into the nightlife in Patong just a few kilometers away. The infamous Bangla Road awaits you there. And if you don't want to drive quite as far: There is also a lot going on in Kata Beach and Karon Beach in the evenings. You can also have a few drinks in countless bars there.

Baan Krating Resort Phuket Strengths and Weaknesses

Overall, Baan Krating Resort Phuket was an excellent choice. The resort is the first hideaway or secret escape that I discovered through my own research. Of course, like any other hotel, the Baan Krating Phuket Resort also has its strengths and weaknesses.

The newer bungalows on the beach are significantly more luxurious than the older ones in the upper location - and of course correspondingly more expensive. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

One of the most important strengths is the incredibly beautiful location in the middle of the jungle - you can hardly experience more nature in a hotel on vacation. The staff is also incredibly friendly. I have rarely seen such courteous employees, from the cleaning lady to the restaurant manager and receptionist.

The resort's biggest advantage: the dream beach Ao Sane Beach is located directly at the foot of the resort. Photo: Sascha Tegtmeyer

On the other hand, the Baan Krating Phuket Resort is now getting a little old. The bungalow hotel could actually do with a more extensive renovation. On the other hand, there would also be a fear that the hotel would then receive a luxury renovation and become significantly more expensive.

Baan Krating Phuket Resort – the last real bungalow hotel on the island?

My conclusion

The Baan Krating Phuket Resort scores above all with its incredibly beautiful location. I have been to Thailand before and discovered the destination in detail, but it was only during this stay that I realized how beautiful the south of Phuket is. And it is precisely in this privileged location that the Baan Krating Phuket Resort is located.

If you are looking for peace and quiet and want to really relax on vacation, the bungalow hotel is ideal for you. Wellness holidays, beach holidays and bathing holidays, nature trips and even adventure holidays can be realized from the resort. In addition, the wonderfully beautiful beach is practically right on the doorstep. The bottom line is that Baan Krating Phuket Resort is the ideal place to stay on the island. I can fully recommend the hotel.

I paid for my stay at Baan Krating Phuket Resort entirely myself. My experience with the hotel corresponds exactly to what I experienced there.
