Gili T, the largest of the three Gili Islands, is popular with backpackers and young world travelers. Sascha Tegtmeyer is diving on Gili Trawangan and is extensively testing the small Indonesian island off the northwest coast of Lombok to determine its suitability for diving and vacation. What is there to discover? What makes the island special? In my travel report Gili Trawangan I have put together the most important information about the small island between Bali and Lombok for you.
The sea is as smooth as glass and there is no breeze, no matter how small, on my first morning on Gili Trawangan. I'm sitting right there Beach in the Dreamdivers restaurant, enjoy the view over the Gili Islands and enjoy my original Lombok coffee in the warm Indonesian morning sun. There's no trace of real heat - the climate on Gili Trawangan is warm but not oppressive, so it's absolutely brilliant.
After a nice conversation with base manager Kurt and operations manager Britta, the super friendly guys from the staff greet me: “Hello Sascha, how are you?” “Very fine, very fine!” I answer, because I am surrounded by turquoise water and a fine sandy beach I feel like I'm in paradise. There is a lot of hustle and bustle all around early in the day: horse-drawn carriages and bicycles cross the small main street without compromise, it's better not to get in their way. What a perfect place to be Vacation close!

Diving in the Java Sea – let’s go to the first spot
23 Dive Centers are available on Gili Trawangan. And that regardless of the fact, that Diving Yes, rumor has it that things around the small islands are just okay. Just okay? Of course that's far too undifferentiated for me, I want to know more about it! So we start straight away at the diving center: grab your things, briefing and off we go on the aluminum boat, which with its two outboard engines is supposedly the fastest on the entire islands. I want to believe it. I've heard so many good things about diving in Indonesia, there must actually be something to it!
Gili Trawangan is the island of turtles
Meno Wall is on the agenda, a fringing reef off the neighboring island of Gili Meno and is just a few minutes' drive from Gili Trawangan. Crystal clear, mirror-smooth water that is warm like in the bathtub. This gives us 100 out of 100 points, which is definitely more than okay! And it doesn't stop there: Meno Wall not only has a really beautifully vegetated reef, but above all one thing: turtles! We meet eight turtles on our UW tour! We encounter them in all variations: sleeping, eating, free-swimming. The large number of curious armored animals is easy to explain: There is a breeding station on Gili Trawangan - a lot is being done on the Gilis to make diving as ecological as possible.

Island for young divers and the young at heart
The Dreamdivers are an excellent diving school - but their burgers are just as good. “Our burger restaurant is an absolute success!” Britta tells me from the base. Demand has been so high since June that even the manager was surprised at how well the idea was received. I see one tablet full of burgers being carried into the restaurant after the next. Looks good, I definitely have to try it because diving makes you hungry!
After diving, the day on Gili Trawangan is definitely not over. There are countless restaurants, bars and open-air clubs on the small island. One can Stand Up Paddling, has quite good conditions for surfing and you can easily cycle around the island with a radius of just under seven kilometers. There are no cars on the Gilis; you ride a bicycle or a carriage. The best thing about it is that everyone is relaxed, open-minded and informal!
You walk barefoot all the time and get into conversation with travelers from all over the world. Many backpackers from Germany and England are on the Gilis. Many are on their way around the world after graduating from high school or studying, or they want to discover Southeast Asia. Most of the young divers discovered diving and made their OWD here on the Gilis. The conditions are also more than perfect: a pool right outside the door and relaxed, for beginners suitable dive spots around the island. Some of the high school graduates and students go straight to the instructor and start working for three to twelve months on the base. Really enviable, because once you have discovered the tact of the fun island for yourself, you want to stay. As long as possible.
