My pro tip: The more detailed you plan your travel blog in advance, the easier it will be later

The more time you take to planning your travel blog, the easier and more enjoyable you'll have it later. Because some of the mistakes that you can make in the beginning run through like a red thread in yours Online travel magazine and can only be remedied with great effort. Only after careful consideration should you start creating your travel blog. Above all, you should deal intensively with the following questions:

Maldives, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, Diving, Snorkeling, Coral Reef, DiveOcean Maldives, Sailing, SUP, Stand Up Paddling, Travel, Vacation, Wanderlust, Luxury vacation, Resort, Resort Island, Coco Collection Sascha Tegtmeyer explores the Maldives paradise Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu both above and under water.
My travel blog has already given me the chance to have very extraordinary experiences and to see some of the most beautiful places on our planet. I am very thankful for that. And for me, too, everything started very simply with creating a travel blog - you just have to do it!
  • What should my travel blog be called? Which name do I like and will I still like it in two years?
  • Would I like to host my travel blog myself or host it externally with a blog provider?
  • Which content management system is most likely to appeal to me?
  • How do I want to design my content? What do I want to write about?

I would like to emphasize again: You can save a lot of time, nerves and money if you answer these questions as detailed and sustainable as possible. You should think of a name for your travel blog and secure a domain that you really like - and will continue to like in the future. If in doubt, sleep a few nights over it and you may have even better ideas.

1. Select travel blog name and domain

If I had the choice again, I would no longer call my travel blog Just-Wanderlust.com. The name with Wanderlust I just don't like it as much as I did at the beginning because it is used so often. However, rebranding my travel blog with a different name is very time-consuming, so I'll keep the old name. If you don't want to make this mistake, you should think about the name longer from the start and choose something that you will still like a lot in five years' time. When you've found a nice name, you can then secure it as a domain.

2. Host the travel blog yourself or host it externally

All successful websites are usually self hosted. You choose a provider like Strato or IONOS and set up a web space there on which your blog, the database and all files are stored. If you host your blog yourself, you have full control over all files, so to speak. If you are more successful later and maybe even employ a programmer to edit your travel blog, you absolutely need a self-hosted travel blog. On the other hand, you have to take care of everything yourself: You have to 1. set up your content management system (CMS), 2. issue the SSL certificates and 3. link the database.

Third-party hosting, on the other hand, means that you set up your website with a website provider who offers you a simple website builder. This may be tempting for beginners at the beginning - but if you have more ambitious plans for your travel blog, this will lead to problems later.

3. The right content management system (CMS) for your travel blog

If you want to create a travel blog, you inevitably have to choose a content management system (CMS) in which you write your blog posts, design the visual appearance of your website and make all the important settings. The most widely used system is WordPress. It is used on millions of websites worldwide.

I'll be honest: I've been working with WordPress since 2008, and overall I've had very good experiences with it and will continue to use this system in the future. For this reason I can only recommend it to you. However, everyone has different preferences and you can of course also use systems like Drupal, TYPO3, Joomla!, Contao or Neos.

4. Design travel blog: find the blog theme and design it individually

Once you've set up the system, you can start looking at the content for your travel blog. First you have to find a suitable design with which to design your blog - this is also known as a “blog theme”. If you use WordPress as a CMS, you will find suitable themes at Themeforest.

You then design the theme of your travel blog - the appearance - individually with colors, fonts, images and videos according to your own preferences. This part is almost the most fun because you can really get creative and design your travel blog however you want.

5. Now you can start writing your travel blog

When you have set up your travel blog according to your preferences, you can start filling the blog with content - especially text contributions. Because a travel blog is first and foremost a written online travel magazine for which you want to attract readers. You can - and should - add photos and videos, embedding social media, tables and lists to your text contributions in order to offer your users the greatest possible added value. The core of your work as a travel blogger: however, will consist of writing your travel blog.

Create a travel blog with WordPress – Here’s how it works

You can choose between numerous content management systems such as Drupal, Typo3 and Contao for your travel blog. I have already had the pleasure of working with these systems professionally and I have to say: This is not my world. If you just want to become a travel blogger and don't want to be an IT professional, these CMS are difficult to use.

This is not intended to be an advertisement for WordPress and you should perhaps test the different CMS before setting up your travel blog on it. All I'm saying is that WordPress works best for me and for me.

And this is how it all looks in practice when you have created your travel blog on WordPress and start writing. Create a travel blog Become a travel blogger Tips Instructions
And this is how it all looks in practice when you have created your travel blog on WordPress and start writing.

Especially because you can choose between a number of plugins and expand the functionality according to your preferences. Because WordPress is the largest provider in the world, most of the plugins are developed for it and it is easy for you if you want to adapt your travel blog to your needs. I would always create my travel blog with WordPress. I have also put together a step-by-step guide for you on how to create your travel blog with WordPress.

1. Install WordPress travel blog on the host's server

You look for a hosting provider like IONOS or Strato and set up your customer account there. You can now carry out the WordPress installation for your travel blog on your web space. The larger providers do this automatically for you and you have your CMS installed and linked to the database in seconds. Don't forget to set up an SSL certificate for your site - this has become mandatory with the GDPR. You can recognize it by the "s" in https: // on your website.

2. Log into the WordPress backend of your travel blog and make settings

After setting up with the hosting provider, you can log into the backend of your WordPress travel blog and familiarize yourself with the settings. First and foremost, you will want to install a number of plugins. I've made a list for you (a little further down in the text) with the WordPress plugins that I use in my travel blog and with which I am super satisfied.

When setting up your website and the plugins, make sure that you comply with the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation and other laws in your place of residence and the place of residence of your readers.

In particular, you'll want to install your WordPress travel blog theme first. You can find high-quality themes at Themeforest. I am currently using the Sitka theme. It's great and I like it a lot, but it hasn't been updated in 1,5 years. That's why I'll soon be looking for a new travel blog Wordpress theme.

List: the most important WordPress plugins for your travel blog

The list is alphabetical and includes my absolute must-have WordPress plugins for travel blogs, without which working on the online travel magazine would be significantly less fun. * Of course, I also use other WordPress plugins, but the ones listed below are my absolutely essential addons for WordPress.
